Eén van de dorpjes in Letland dat de diepste indruk op mij heeft gemaakt en waar mijn breivrienden en ik inmiddels al twee keer hartelijk zijn ontvangen, is het katholieke Alsunga in de provincie Kurzeme (Koerland). We bewonderden er de kleurrijke kousen en polswarmers, gaven een workshop, genoten van de zang, we werden er in 2015 en 2016 in het traditionele kostuum gehesen en leerden er Sklandrauši (worteltaartjes) bakken. Het was dan ook geweldig om een aantal van deze mensen terug te zien aan het eind van de conferentie in het National History Museum in Riga. En hoe,… het hele dorp leek er wel te zijn, iedereen in de kleding van Alsunga, compleet met kousen, kroontjes, mutsjes, kralenpolsjes en een bruidskist meeslepend of onder de arm oude instrumenten, zoals doedelzakken van bont en leer. En wat een show maakten ze ervan! Niet alleen zang, dans en muziek, maar ook een toneelstuk waarin een vrouw van meisje tot bruid werd omgekleed onder luid geroep, gezang en zelfs geknok met textiele knotsen van de omstandstanders. Wat een kracht gaat er uit van zo’n groep mensen die met hartstocht en liefde zich bijna verliezen in hun spel. En daar zat ik zomaar bij op de eerste rij, knipogend naar de vrouwen die ik al kende.

Maar het leukste kwam nog. Na het optreden ontstond er, aangemoedigd door een glaasje Black Balsam, een spontaan feestje op de gang in het museum. Ze konden gewoon niet stoppen met zingen en spelen, dus ondanks de beperkte ruimte gingen al snel de voetjes van de vloer. Zelfs ik werd ten dans gevraagd, maar dat dit voetenwerk ging me ver boven de pet. Maar ik genoot van alles, jong en oud, allemaal in hun prachtige kleding en ze hadden er zin in. Kippenvel, want je weet, echter en authentieker dan zo kan het niet worden. Na verloop van tijd stopte de groep en vertrokken ze, nog steeds in hun klederdracht, naar de bus die hen terug bracht naar Alsunga. Bedankt en tot ziens!

One of the villages in Latvia that made the deepest impression on me and where my knitting friends and I were already twice received with a warm welcome, is the the Catholic village Alsunga in the region Kurzeme. We admired the colorful socks and wrist warmers, gave a workshop, enjoyed the singing, were dressed up in 2015 and 2016 in the traditional costume and learned how to back Sklandrauši (carrot cakes). It was so great to see some of these people again at the end of the conference at the National History Museum in Riga. And not just that… the whole town seemed to be there, everyone in the clothing of Alsunga, complete with stockings, crowns, hats, beaded wrist warmers and towing a bridal chest or having an ancient instrument such as bagpipe of fur and leather under the arm. And they really know how to make a real show of it! Not only singing, dancing and music, but also a play in which a girl is transformed into a bride by changing clothes, all done by the other women and men with loud voices, singing and even fake fighting with textile clubs. You can feel the power that such a group of people has, when they are almost lost in their play they perform with so much passion and love. And there I was just in the front row, winking at the women I knew.

But the best was yet to come. Encouraged by a glass of Black Balsam, there was a spontaneous party in the hallway of the museum. They just could not stop singing and playing, so despite the limited space there were soon a few dancing couples at the dance floor. Even I was asked to dance, but such rhithmic footwork was far beyond my capacities. But I enjoyed it all so much, young and old, all in their beautiful clothes and it was obvious they loved to sing and dance. Goosebumps all over, because I knew, his is as real and authentic as it ever will be. Over time, the group stopped and they left, still in their traditional costumes, to the bus that brought them back to Alsunga. Thank you and goodbye!

Afgelopen zaterdag, 19 november, was het International Fair Isle Kep Day. Toen ik twee jaar geleden in het musuem in Fair Isle was wees curator Anne Sinclair me op een prikbord vol met foto’s van mutsen die het jaar ervoor waren gebreid, onder meer door de breiers op het eiland. Een geweldig project, waar je nog steeds bij aan kan sluiten, kijk maar eens op hun Facebook-pagina. Destijds kocht ik in het George Waterston Museum natuurlijk ook het patroonboekje van de muts, waarvan ik de motieven verwerkt heb in één van de werkstukken voor het behalen van de TKGA-titel Master Knitter. Tja, wie zou er niet geïnspireerd raken op dat prachtige eiland, waar het prachtige Fair Isle-breiwerk zijn oorsprong vond. Hoog tijd om weer eens terug te gaan naar dat mooie plekje!

Last Saturday, 19 November, it was the International Fair Isle Kep Day. Two years ago when I was  in the musuem in Fair Isle curator Anne Sinclair showed me a bulletin board filled with photos of caps that year were knitted by the knitters of the island and other places. A great project, where you still can join in, just look at their Facebook page. When I was on Fair Isle I also bought the pattern book of the hat at the George Waterston Museum, of which I incorporated the motifs in one of the workpieces to achieve the TKGA-titel Master Knitte. Well, who would not get inspired at that beautiful island, where the gorgeous Fair Isle knitting originated. High time to go back again to that beautiful place!

In Noorwegen wordt heel wat afgebreid, ook voor babies en kinderen. Dat kan ik me wel voorstellen, want gebreide kleding is warm en elastisch, dus geschikt voor kleine beweeglijke mensjes. Kleine pandjes, lekker snel klaar ook. Maar toen het boek op de deurmat viel met een briefje erbij van de uitgever met de vraag wat ik ervan vond, zat ik met de handen in het haar. Sommigen van jullie weten het wel,… ik ben niet echt van de kleine kinderen. Maar ik moet toegeven, dit boek ziet er best aantrekkelijk uit. Lekker modern vormgegeven, gezellige foto’s van meest zeer kleine kinderen en een paar voor volwassenen. Tja, hoe moest ik dat nu gaan beoordelen? Het boek ging dus mee naar mijn wekelijkse breigroep in Marktzicht in Utrecht op dinsdagavond, waar gelukkig een paar echte moeders en oma’s zich er over wilden buigen.

In Klompelompe vindt je een grote collectie patronen in meest zachte tintjes, grappige modelletjes en gefotografeerd in een rustieke omgeving. Dat sprak aan. De moeilijkheidsgraad werd ingeschat en er werd besloten dat het goed te doen moet zijn voor iets gevorderde breiers. En toen barstte het los: ach, dat babybroekje is best schetig, en dan dat balletrokje té schattig, en wat een wolk van en baby met dat petje op! In mijn ogen is het een grappige mix tussen tuttig ouderwets, vintage en hippe baby-chique. Kortom, dit deel ging dus volledig aan mij voorbij maar het was wel duidelijk. Leuk gezellig boek, dat moeders aanspreekt en inspireert. Nou, dat weten we dan ook weer. Dank jullie wel breivriendinnen van Stitch ‘n Bitch Utrecht!

In Norway there is a lot of knitting going on for babies and children. Yes, I can imagine, for knitwear is warm and elastic, so suitable for tiny humans that love to move. Small parts, so your knitting will be finished quickly. But when the book landed on my door mat with a note attached by the publisher asking what I thought about the book, I was at a loss. Some of you know it … I’m not really into little children. But I have to admit, this book looks pretty attractive. Nice modern design, nice photos of mostly very small children and a few for adults. Well, how was I going to judge? So I took the book to my weekly knitting night Marktzicht in Utrecht on Tuesday, where I fortunately found some real mothers and grandmothers who wanted to check out the book and patterns.

In Klompelompe you will find a large collection of patterns in mostly soft colour, funny models and all is photographed in a rustic setting. That looked good. They assessed who difficult the patterns are and it was decided that it should be good to do something for a bit advanced knitters. And then they burst out: oh, these are the cutest baby pants ever, and then the ballet skirt, it is just too cute, and such a supercute baby with that cap on! In my eyes it is an interesting mix between old fashioned, vintage and modern baby chique. Overall, this part was so completely passed me by but it was obvious. A nice cozy book that appeals to mothers and inspires. Well, that is clear to me now. Thank you knit friends of Stitch ‘n Bitch Utrecht!

Vandaag ontving ik mijn spullen terug uit Amerika, fijn om mijn Fair Isle vest en Aran muts weer veilig terug te hebben! Het certificaat en de pin die bewijzen het nu echt gelukt is de titel van Master Knitter van The Knitting Guild Association te behalen, zijn nu ook hier en vormen de tastbare bewijzen. Heerlijk, alles afgerond, lekker opruimen en drie dikke groene mappen als mijn eigen persoonlijke naslagwerk vol proefjes en weetjes gaan de kast in.

Today I received my stuff back from America, good to have my Fair Isle cardigan and Aran hat safely back! The certificate and pin are here to prove I really succeeded in obtaining the title of Master Knitter at The Knitting Guild Association, and are the tangible evidence. Great, all is completed, it is nice to tidy up and put my three thick green folders as my own personal reference book full of samples and knowledge in my closet.

Het was wat vervreemdend om opeens op de eerste rij te zitten bij een conferentie van het National Historical Museum of Latvia in Riga. Stel je voor, een grote zaal vol met alleen maar Letten,… en ik. Vertaling zat er dus niet in, maar toch is het leuk om te zien hoe alles gaat en de sfeer te proeven, de afbeeldingen op het scherm mee te kijken en in de pauzes mensen te ontmoeten. De conferentie duurde twee dagen, dus ik ben af en toe lekker de stad en zo in gegaan ter afwisseling. Maar met de opening van de wantententoonstelling en de tentoonstelling ‘The Latvians: An Interpretation. Latvian Ethnographic Exhibition of 1896’ en het optreden van de zangers uit Alsunga was ik er natuurlijk bij.

It was somewhat alienating to suddenly sit in the front row at a conference of the National Historical Museum in Lativa in Riga. Image, a large hall filled with nothing but Latvians … and me. Translation therefore was of course not an option, but it was fun to see how things were done and to soak up the atmosphere, watching the images on the screen and to meet people during the breaks. The conference lasted for two days, so now and then I took a break in the old city for a change. But with the opening of the mitten exhibition and the exhibition ‘The Latvians: An Interpretation. Latvian Ethnographic Exhibition of 1896″ and the performance of the singers from Alsunga I was of course there.

In 2015 leerden Mieke, Andrea en ik de museummedewerkers Ilze Mikelsone en Inita Heinola kennen toen we in het depot van dit museum stapels prachtige wanten en handschoenen bestudeerden. Ilze , die ervoor heeft gezorgd dat ik bij de conferentie kon zijn, had prachtige polswarmers aan, die haar petit robe noir een mooi accent gaven. Inita, de curator van de wantententoonstelling, had een prachtig overzicht van wanten en handschoenen uit allerlei gebieden in Letland samengesteld. Beiden zijn gedreven mensen die met hart en ziel werken om de collecties uit te breiden, de fragiele textiele objecten te conserveren en te tonen aan het publiek. Omdat dit mijn vierde keer in Letland was, krijg ik meer inzicht in welke motieven, kleuren en patronen uit welke gebieden komen. Ik ga steeds meer overeenkomsten en verschillen zien, ook als ik het Letse breiwerk vergelijk met bijvoorbeeld dat uit Estland.

In 2015 Mieke, Andrea and I met the museum employees Ilze Mikelsone and Inita Heinola when we researched piles of beautiful mittens and gloves at the depot museum. Ilze, who made it possible for me to attend the conference, wore beautiful wrist warmers, which gave her petit robe noir a beautiful accent. Inita, curator of the mitten exhibition, composed a wonderful overview of mittens and gloves from all regions in Latvia. Both are passionate people who work with heart and soul to expand the collections, preserve the fragiles textile items and display it for the public. Because this was my fourth time in Latvia, I’m learning to better understand what motifs, colors and patterns come from which regions. I see more and more similarities and differences, also when compared with Latvian knitwear for example, that in Estonia.

De tentoonstelling bestaat uit een dubbelzijdige zuil met aan beide kanten foto’s van oude wanten en informatie. In de vitrines zijn de echte oude wanten en handschoenen tentoongesteld. Je kan er met je neus op om de details te bestuderen. Met Jan ben ik de er nog terug geweest om in alle rust nog even een blik te werpen zonder alle mensen die er waren tijdens de opening. Het breiwerk wordt iedere maand gewisseld voor een andere selectie, zodat er al met al voor de fanatieke liefhebbers een groot deel van de collectie te bewonderen is als ze een paar keer terug komen. Ook in de permanente collectie zijn enkele prachtige stukken opgenomen.

The exhibition consists of a double-sided folding stand with on both sides pictures of old mittens and information. In the showcases real old mittens and gloves are exhibited. You can look at them closely and study the details. With Jan I have been back for a moment to look at them again without the crowds of people who were at the opening. The knitwear is changed every month for another selection, so the avid enthusiasts can come more as once and admire a large part of the collection. Also, some beautiful pieces included in the permanent collection.

De wantententoonstelling was extra feestelijk vanwege het uitkomen van kalenders met wanten en handschoenen uit het hele land. Er is voor zowel 2017 en 2018 zowel een grote als een kleine kalender samengesteld. Ik nam ze natuurlijk allemaal mee, prachtige souveniers. De opening werd geopend door de directeur van het museum, waarbij Inita en vele andere medewerkers in het zonnetje werden gezet. Ook Linda Rubena en haar dochter Darta waren erbij, beiden met prachtige door Linda gebreide polswarmers. De eerste conferentiedag was een bijzondere en geweldig leuke ervaring. Moe en voldaan en een bezoekje aan het Lido voor een pompoensoepje en een Lets pannenkoekje ging ik terug naar mijn appartement in de Lāčplēsis Iela.

Dank aan Inita en Ilze en alle andere medewerkers van het National Historical Museum voor de uitnodiging om hier bij te mogen zijn! Ilze, het waren heerlijke bonbonnetjes!

The opening of the exhibition was extra special because of the publication of calendars with mittens and gloves from across the country. For both 2017 and 2018 a large and a small calendar is made. I have them all, of course, wonderful souvenirs. The exhibition was opened by the director of the museum, where Inita and many other employees were put in the limelight. Linda Rubena and her daughter Darta were there, both with beautiful wrist warmers knitted by Linda. The first day of the conference was a special and great fun experience. Tired but satisfied, and after a visit to the Lido for a pumpkin soup and a Latvian pancake I went back to my apartment in the Lāčplēsis Iela.

Thanks to Inita and Ilze and all other employees of the National Historical Museum for the invitation be in there! Ilze, the bonbons were delicious! 

Een aantal jaar geleden startte ik met een ex-collega en breivriendin aan het programma dat moest leiden tot certificering als Master Knitter bij het Amerikaanse breiersgilde TKGA (The Knitting Guild of America). We richten een soort studiegroepje en gingen aan de slag met Level I. Beide dames besloten al snel na de enthousiaste start te stoppen, maar ik vond het allemaal wel leuk en zinvol, dus ik ging in mijn eentje door. Soms met lange tussenpozen of in laag tempo als ik het druk had met het schrijven van boeken en dergelijke, maar nu is het eindelijk zo ver! Ik heb Level III afgesloten en ben sinds vanmorgen Master Knitter!

Dank aan de vrijwilligers van de TKGA die zoveel tijd en energie steken in het maken en updaten van het programma en het beoordelen en verder helpen van de deelnemers.

En morgen,…. door met andere spannende activiteiten!

A few years ago I started with a former colleague and knitting friend on the program that should lead to certification as a Master Knitter at the American knitters guild TKGA (The Knitting Guild of America). We formed a study group and started working at Level I. Both ladies soon after the enthousiastic start decided to stop soon, but I liked it and thought it was very good to test your skills, so I continued. Sometimes, I stopped or slowed down for a while when I was busy writing books and such, but now it’s finally happened! I have finished Level III and since this morning I’m a Master Knitter!

Thanks to the volunteers of the TKGA who put so much time and energy in creating and updating of the program and judging and further helping the participants.

And tomorrow …. I will continue with lots of other exciting activities!

En daar gaan ik morgen alweer, dit keer naar Riga in Letland, om daar onder meer de opening van de wantententoonstelling van het National History Museum of Latvia mee te maken. En als ik er dan toch ben,… lekker de stad verkennen, naar álle wol- en handwerkwinkels en natuurlijk ook naar Sena Klets, het mekka van de textieltraditie in de vorm van een schitterende winkel in het centrum van de oude stad. Met een volle week de tijd zal ik voldoende tijd hebben om op zoek te gaan naar meer informatie over Magic Motifs en aanverwante zaken. Op vrijdag is er de première van het ballet Peer Gynt (Grieg) en op zondag sluit ik met Jan die vrijdag arriveert in Riga de week feestelijk af met de Fledermaus (Strauss) in het chique operagebouw.

And there I go again tomorrow, this time to Riga in Latvia, to be present at the opening of the mitten exhibition of the National History Museum of Latvia. And if I’m there anyway,… I will stay to explore the city, go to all yarn- and handicraft shops and of course also to Sena Klets, the mecca of textile tradition in the form of a gorgeous shop in the center of the old town. With a full week’s time I will have enough time to try to find more information about Magic Motifs and related matters. On Friday there will be the premiere of the ballet Peer Gynt (Grieg) and on Sunday I close with Jan who will arrive in Riga on Friday the week with the Fledermaus (Strauss) in the chic Opera House.

Je zal er maar mee behept zijn, liefde voor boeken. Dan wil je ze allemaal in huis hebben, altijd kunnen grijpen, om gericht naar iets te kunnen zoeken of je wilt ze gewoon lekker door kunnen bladeren. Boeken zijn belangrijk, want het zijn schatkistjes vol kennis en wetenswaardigheden die op die manier worden vastgelegd en verspreid.

De Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers heeft de handen in een geslagen en een prachtig boek over Fair Isle breiwerk uitgegeven. Ik was bij het gilde te gast in juli in het Shetlandse Voe toen tijdens de gildevergadering de laatste dingen werden besproken over de uitgave en verleden week viel het bij mij op de mat. En ik ben er dolblij mee, want in dit boek is een grandioze verzameling met de hand ingekleurde Fair Ilse-motieven vastgelegd.

Na een korte inleiding door Carol Christiansen (curator Shetland Museum) over de achtergrond van de patronenboeken en de geschiedenis van de Fair Isle-patronen, vind je 85 pagina’s vól met motiefjes. De lay-out is onaangetast, wat je ziet zijn perfecte kleurenkopiën van de authentieke patroonbladen uit Bill Henry’s notitieboeken uit de jaren twintig of dertig van de vorige eeuw. En dat is zoals je het wilt zien, inclusief de vergeelde randjes, maar met de échte met de hand en kleurpotlood ingekleurde tekeningen. Duidelijk wordt ook de Noorse invloed op de Shetlandse breiwereld, want bij een aantal patronen wordt expliciet vermeld dat het hier om Noorse motieven gaat. Bladerend door het boek zie ik al allerlei prachtige projecten voor me. De motieven prikkelen de creativiteit, want het zijn geen complete patronen, je zal er zelf toepassingen voor moeten bedenken. Maar de kleurexperimenten van toen inspireren nog steeds en nodigen uit te worden getest en aangepast aan je eigen smaak en kleurgevoel. Kortom een heerlijk boek dat niet mag ontbreken in je boekenkast. Mijn advies: ga ‘m zelf maar halen in het prachtige Shetland!

You will be with me afflicted, a big love of books. You want to have them all, keep them always whitin reach, so you will be at any time able to grap them and look for something or just to be able to browse through when you feel like it. Books are important because they are treasure chests of knowledge that can be preserved in this way and disclosed to all interested knitters.

Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers has published a beautiful book on Fair Isle knitting. I was at the guild meeting hosted in July in the Shetland Voe when the guild members discussed the last issues during the guild meeting. Last week the book fell on my doormat. And I am delighted with it, because in this book you find a magnificent collection of hand-colored Fair Ilse motifs.

After a brief introduction on the background of the pattern books and the history of Fair Isle patterns by Carol Christiansen (curator Shetland Museum), you’ll find 85 pages stuffed with patterns. The layout is unaffected, what you see are perfect color copies of the authentic pattern sheets of Bill Henry’s notebooks from the twenties and thirties of the last century. And that’s the way you want to see it, including the yellowed edges, but with the real hand and color crayon drawings. It becomes clear also that there had been Norwegian influence on the Shetland knitting world, for it is explicitly mentioned in a number of patterns that it is a Norwegian motifs. Browsing through the book, I see all kinds of wonderful projects for me. The motives stimulate creativity, because they are not a complete patterns, you will have to invent uses for it your self. But the color experiments inspire and invite to be tested and adapted to your own taste and color sense. Overall a wonderful book that should not be missing in your bookcase. My advice: go to beautiful Shetland and buy it your self there!

Soms heb je geluk en kom je voor een habbekrats iets geweldigs tegen. In Inverness stapten Nancy Marchant en ik een tweedehands winkeltje binnen waar ik zoiets geweldigs vond. Voor weinig, slechts 12 pond, dus minder nog dan 14 euro. Nee, dit keer geen breiwerk, maar een andere passie van mij, traditionele kleding. De kilt die ik er vond is prachtig. De kleurechte stof is nog steeds stralend van kleur. Hier en daar een klein mottengaatje mag de pret niet drukken. Maar dat mag dan ook wel, want het oude etiketje in de rokband verraadt dat het hier gaat om de kilt van mrs Hendry uit 1957. Officieel is hij mij te klein, maar met wat kleine ingrepen kan ik ‘m vermaken. Zal ik dat doen? Of blijft het een hebbeding? Ik draag graag kilts en plooirokken en heb vier draagbare kilts in mijn kast hangen. In Shetland heb ik er verleden jaar zelfs nog twee gekocht. Dit zijn kilts die aan de eisen van deze tijd zijn aangepast, lekker vlotte modellen die fijn dragen, maar wel gemaakt van mooie wollen stof en voorzien van een eenvoudige kiltspeld.

Nèt over het water bij ons hotel in het centrum van Inverness vond ik een traditionele kiltmaker. In de winkel veel écht mooie spullen van hoge kwaliteit. Een vitrine met kilttasjes voor mannen, rokspelden en ander moois. Een tafel in het midden van de winkel ligt vol met stalenboeken van diverse stoffenmakers. Hieruit kan je een stof selecteren waar je een traditionele kilt van kan laten maken. De stoffen kunnen per 8 yard worden besteld, maar soms hebben ze restjes te koop. De tartanstof van mrs Hendry’s kilt was ook te koop in de winkel. Op het etiketje staat dat het hier gaat om een tartan van de clan MacDonald, en wel de Ancient.

Sometimes you get lucky and you find a bargain that is really amazing. In Inverness Nancy Marchant and I visited a shop with second hand stuff, where I found a treasure. For next to nothing, only 12 pounds, so even less than 14 euros. No, this time not knitwear, but another passion of mine, traditional clothing. The kilt that I found is lovely. The colours are still bright. A small moth hole here and there  should not spoil the fun. That is to be expected, because the old label on the waistband reveals that this is the kilt worn by Mrs. Hendry in 1957. Officially, it’s too small to me, but with some small alterations I will fit in. Shall I do that? Or shall I keep it like it is? I like to wear kilts and pleated skirts and own four wearable kilts already. In Shetland I have even bought two kilts last year. These are kilts that are adapted to the demands of the times, nice smooth models that I can wear comfortably, but made of fine wool fabric and with a simple kilt pin.

Just across the water at our hotel in the heart of Inverness I found a traditional kilt maker. In the shop there was a lot really nice quality stuff. A showcase with kilt bags for men, kilt pins and other goodies. A table in the middle of the store is filled with sample books of various fabric makers. Here you can select a fabric and they will make it into a traditional kilt. The fabrics can be ordered by 8 yards, but sometimes they have leftovers for sale. The tartan fabric of Mrs. Hendry’s kilt was also available in the store. On the label states that it is a tartan of the MacDonald clan, namely the Ancient.

Wat een prachtige ervaring! Vijf dagen op reis naar het mooie Inverness bij Loch Ness om workshops en presentaties te geven tijdens het Loch Ness Knitting Festival in Eden Court. Het weer kon niet mooier zijn voor de tijd van het jaar. In het vliegtuig ontmoette ik al de eerste breiers. De eerste middag hadden we tijd voor onszelf, dus lekker de stad verkennen en shoppen met Nancy Marchant. Vroeg in de avond haalde de taxi ons om ons in onze party outfit naar het galadiner in Kingsmills hotel te brengen. Een feestelijke locatie waar de grote ronde tafels uitbundig waren gedekt en een man in kilt de haggis aansneed. Gelukkig hadden ze voor mij een vega pompoensoepje. Een avond met veel vertier, speeches van Willie, Alan en Christel Seyfarth, doedelzakmuziek en Schotse dans.

What a wonderful experience! A five day trip to beautiful Inverness near Loch Ness to teach and give presentations during the Loch Ness Knitting Festival at Eden Court. The weather could not be better for the time of the year. During the flight I met the first knitters. The first afternoon we were free to go into town and some shopping with Nancy Marchant. Early in the evening a taxi took us in our party outfit to the gala dinner in Kingsmills hotel . A festive location where the large round tables were lavishly covered and a man in kilt broached the haggis. Luckily they had a vegan pumpkin soup for me. An evening with lots of entertainment, speeches by Willie, Alan and Christel Seyfarth, bagpipe music and Scottish dance.

De volgende ochtend gaf ik mijn eerste workshop over twijnend breien, ‘s middags de eerste presentatie in het Scala, een mooie bioscoopachtige zaal met alle professionele voorzieningen voor het geven van presentaties. Het was de eerste keer dat ik een zich opwarmende doedelzakspeler in mijn lokaal aantrof. Tussendoor kon ik gelukkig even naar de Marketplace om wat leuke dingen te scoren. Voor Jan een blauw-zwarte cashmere shawl en voor mezelf twee strengen heavy lace-garen van DyeNinja, geverfd in diep oranje, de kleur van een goeie Armagnac. ‘s Avonds had Di Gilpin een gezellige breiavond georganiseerd, waaraan Nancy en ik natuurlijk deelnamen.

The next morning I gave my first workshop on twined knitting, at noon the first presentation at the Scala, a beautiful cinematic space with all professional facilities for giving presentations. It was the first time I found a bagpiper in my classroom that was warming up for his performance. In between I was happy to go to the Marketplace to score some nice things. For Jan a blue-black cashmere shawl and for myself two skeins of heavy lace yarn of DyeNinja, dyed in deep orange, the color of a good Armagnac. That evening Di Gilpin had organized a cozy knit night, which Nancy and I attended of course.

Zaterdag startte met gezellig bijpraten tijdens het ontbijt met Alice Starmore. Daarna weer aan de slag. We werden na de dag met workshop en presentatie geven verrast met een concert, of zoals de muzikanten uitlegden, feestelijk avond met muziek en dans. En dat was het zéker, want ik ben gek op traditionele muziek, dans en kleding. Vooral de fidler was ronduit geweldig, dus er gingen een paar CD’s mee die ze graag voor me wilden signeren.

Saturday started with a nice chat at breakfast with Alice Starmore. Then back to work. After a day of giving a workshop and presentation we were surprised by a concert, or like the musicians called it, a festive evening with music and dance. And it was certainly a surprise, because I love traditional music, dance and costumes. Especially the fidler was utterly amazing, so I bought a couple of CD’s, which they were happy to sign for me.

Zondag, na mijn laatste workshop, kreeg ik nog een verrassing, want ik mocht aanschuiven bij drie Deense dames die een taxi hadden gehuurd om ons in één middag langs de highlights van de streek te rijden. Zo zag ik de archeologische vindplaats van graven van rond de 4000 jaar oud, het battlefield Culloden (bekend van en startpunt van de boeken/serie Outlander), de Clootie Well (een bos met een wensbron waar mensen stroken textiel in de bomen hingen om te vragen om geluk of gezondheid voor zieke familieleden of vrienden, echt bizar!), het betoverend mooie Loch Ness, het hutje van de Nessie Hunter en een winkel met een expositie over de textielindustrie. De dag sloten we af met een afscheidsdiner in ons hotel met de Deense Paulette, Lizbeth, Vithard en Pernille en de Engelse Chrissie met haar echtgenoot. De sticky toffee pudding was hemels!

Sunday, after my last workshop, I got another surprise as I was allowed to join in with three Danish women who had hired a taxi to drive them in one afternoon along the highlights of the region. I saw the archaeological site with graves from around 4000 years old, the battlefield Culloden (known and starting point of the books/series Outlander), the Clootie Well (a forest with a wishing well where people hang strips of fabric in the trees to ask for happiness and health for sick relatives or friends, really bizarre!), the amazingly beautiful Loch Ness, the hut of the Nessie Hunter and a shop with an exhibition about the textile industry. The day ended with a farewell dinner at our hotel with the Danish Paulette, Lizbeth, Vithard and Pernille and English Chrissie with her husband. The sticky toffee pudding was heavenly!

Toen ik maandag thuis kwam keek ik bijna met weemoed terug op bijzondere ervaring. Vijf prachtige dagen, stralend zonnig weer, een geweldig breifestival, het terugzien van oude en het maken van nieuwe vrienden en de fijne gedachte dat er weer tientallen breiers ‘om’ zijn voor twijnend breien. Het was voorbij in een oogwenk, maar blijft me bij als een prachtige intense ervaring. De plannen zijn om het festival ook volgend jaar weer te laten plaatsvinden, maar deze eerste keer, dat blijft altijd zo speciaal. En ik was erbij!

Monday when I got home I looked back at a time that flew so quickly, but was such a special experience. Five beautiful days, sunny weather, a great knit festival, meeting old and making new friends and the comforting thought that dozens of knitters are now also into twined knitting. It was over in an instant, but will remain with me as a wonderful intense experience. Plans are to have the festival again next year take place, but the first time, that is always so special. And I was there!

Koffertje pakken en lesgeven, ik vind het heerlijk en doe het zo vaak mogelijk! Geweldig dus om morgen naar Inverness in Scotland te vliegen, waar ik op het Loch Ness Knitting Festival twee workshops en twee presentaties zal geven over een voor mij zeer geliefd onderwerp; twijnend breien. Ja ja, ik zal uitgebreid verslag uitbrengen en jullie via Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin en Instagram op de hoogte houden van mijn avonturen in de Highlands.

I love to do both as often as possible, so it is great to fly tomorrow to Inverness in Scotland, where I will give two workshops and two presentations at the Loch Ness Knitting Festival on one of my very popular topics; twined knitting. Yeah, of course I will give you a detailed review and keep you updated on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Instagram about my adventures in the Highlands.

Nog maar een paar dagen te gaan en dan is het zover, dan vertrek ik naar het Loch Ness Knitting Festival in Inverness in Schotland waar ik workshops en presentaties geef over twijnend breien. De voorbereidingen zijn in volle gang en daar hoort ook het opzetten van een speciaal breiwerk bij. In dit geval een experiment met een Magic Motif van het woord Inverness, maar dan twijnend gebreid. Dankzij het feit dat twijnend breiwerk met relatief dikke wol op dunne naalden wordt gebreid, komen de motieven extra mooi uit. Ik neem het mee naar het Knitting Festival, als je meer wilt weten, spreek me gerust aan.
Het woord Inverness is de verborgen boodschap in dit breiwerk. Ja, écht!

Only a few days to go and then I’m off to the Loch Ness Knitting Festival in Inverness in Scotland, where I will teach and give presentations about twined knitting. Preparations are in full swing and of course casting on a special knitting project is part of that. In this case, an experiment with a Magic Motif of the word Inverness, which I will make into a twined knitted sample. Due to the fact that twined knitting is knitted with relatively thick wool on thin needles, the motives are extra nice. I will take it with me to the Knitting Festival, so if you like to know more, just come to me and I will show it to you.
The word Inverness is the hidden message in this piece of knitwear. Yeah, really!

Over amper twee weken start het Knitting Festival in Inverness bij Loch Ness. En wat is er dan leuker dan een Nessie breien? Zelfs passagiers in luchthaven Heathrow grepen de pennen om bij te dragen aan Nessies in de tijd dat ze zaten te wachten.

Binnenkort kan ik al die Nessies met eigen ogen bewonderen als ik afreis naar de Highlands om daar les en presentaties over twijnend breien te geven, maar ik kijk ook uit naar de echte Nessie, je weet maar nooit.

In less than two weeks starts Knitting Festival in Inverness to Loch Ness. And what could be more fun than knitting a Nessie? Even passengers in Heathrow Airport took up the needles to contribute to Nessies during the time they were waiting.

Soon I will be able to admire all those knitted and crocheted Nessies when I depart for the Highlands, where I will be teaching and give presentations about twined knitting, but I also look forward to the real Nessie, you never know.

De winkel van de Schapekop in het idyllische Nieuwpoort was jarenlang een begrip in handwerkland en één van de allerleukste handwerkwinkels in Nederland. Maar helaas, afgelopen zomer werd de winkel opgeheven, om direct te worden omgezet in een geheel nieuw concept; Werkplaats  De Schapekop in Groot-Ammers, hooguit een paar kilometer vanaf Nieuwpoort. Afgelopen weekend hadden ze open huis en jee, wat was het er druk! Allemaal bekende gezichten, gezellig bijpraten met een kopje koffie en een appelpuntje, leuke dingen kopen en natuurlijk de nieuwe werkplaats bekijken. Het is eigenlijk nog als vanouds en heel vertrouwd. Zelfs de mooie oude toonbank heeft weer een plaatsje gekregen. Ruimte zat voor het geven van workshops, wanden vol kleurrijke bolletjes en een praktische verfruimte waar Carina en haar helpers garens verven (ook van hun eigen kudde!).

Ik kocht onder andere een shawl speld met prachtige schapekopjes. Ze lijken precies op mijn schapekopring die ik ooit van Jan kreeg omdat mijn sterrenbeeld ram is, dat echte doorzetters zijn en ik een beetje doorzettingsvermogen toen nodig had om in hoog tempo mijn certificeringen voor mijn ICT-baan te halen.

Het was even wennen, maar wie eenmaal voet over de drempel zet, krijgt meteen weer het oude Schapekop-gevoel en voelt zich weer thuis. Dit najaar start vanaf 10 oktober een nieuwe cursus van Het Betere Breiwerk in de Schapekop, ik heb er nu alweer zin in!

De webshop is open 24/7 en je zal ook op beurzen en bij evenementen de Schapekop regelmatig tegenkomen. Heb je de open dagen gemist en wil je toch graag een kijkje nemen of iets met eigen ogen bekijken wat je wilt kopen, heb je vragen of wil je je opgeven voor Het Betere Breiwerk of een workshop, neem dan vooraf even contact met Carina op.

The shop of the Schapekop in idyllic Nieuwpoort was for years famous among crafters and one of the nicest crafts shops in the Netherlands. But unfortunately, last summer the shop was closed, to be directly converted into an entirely new concept; the Werkplaats Schapekop in Groot-Ammers, at most a few kilometers from Nieuwpoort. Last weekend they opened their doors and it surely was crowded with people! A lot of familiar faces, friendly chat over a cup of coffee and an apple pie, buying nice things, and of course, you could check out the new workshop. Well, it’s still quite familiar. Even the old counter was placed in the workshop. Plenty of space for organizing classes, walls full of colorful balls of wool and a practical dye kitchen where Carina and her helpers dye their yarns (also from their own herd!).

I bought a stunning shawl pin with sheeps heads. They look just like my sheeps head ring I got from Jan years ago because my zodiac sign is Aries, which are real go-getters, and I needed a little perseverance when I needed to pass for my certifications for my IT job rapidly.

It takes time to get used to things, but once you have set foot over the threshold, you will feel the old Schapekop ambiance and you will feel at home again. This autumn, starting 10 October a new course Het Betere Breiwerk (Advanced Knitting) in the Schapekop, I have now already excited!

The webshop is open 24/7 and you will meet the Schapekop at fairs and other events regularly.
