Life 'n Knitting

In mijn ogen is Estland het Mekka van het breien en dat draag ik graag uit in de breiwereld. Een jaar of vier geleden liep ik voor het eerst Tallinn in en was meteen verkocht. Overal handwerk, breien, garen, een luilekkerland voor de handwerker en breier. Dit alles vertelde ik aan de Estlandse journaliste Marian Männi, die een paar weken geleden op aanraden van één van mijn collega’s de Afstap bezocht om de vrouw te ontmoeten die zo gek is op Estland en de Estlandse breikunsten. Dit gesprek resulteerde in een paginagroot artikel in Postimees, de bekendste krant in Estland, afgelopen zaterdag. Een paar jaar terug stond ik ook al op pagina 3, al KIP-pend in het park in Tallinn met mijn Nederlandse en Estlandse breivrienden, middelste foto bovenaan.

In my eyes, Estonia is the Mecca of knitting, a fact that I like to share with all knittters. Four years ago I walked into Tallinn for the first time and was immediately in love with the city. Everywhere crafts, knitting, yarn, a real heaven for the craftsman and knitter. I told this all to the Estonian journalist Marian Männi, who a few weeks ago at the suggestion of one of my colleagues from the Afstap came to meet this woman that is so crazy about Estonia and the Estonian knitting arts. This conversation resulted in a full-page article in Postimees, the most famous newspaper in Estonia, last Saturday. A few years back I was already on page 3, KIP-ping in the park in Tallinn with my Dutch and Estonian friends, middle picture above.

Even een kort blogje vanuit Estonia met de HTC mobiel op de hotelkamer. We hebben Kihnu Roosi ontmoet en zij, Ella en de andere breisters van eiland zijn geweldig. En we hebben met ze geKIPt! Mooier kan de KIP dag toch niet worden?

Just a short blog from Estonia made on the HTC mobile in de hotel room. We have met Kihnu Roosi. She, Ella and the other knitters of the island are amazing. And we have KIP-ed with them. This was the best KIP Day ever!

Nog steeds sta ik ervan te kijken dat je als fanatieke breier regelmatig in de publiciteit verschijnt. Ga zitten breien in een café en hup, binnen de kortste keren heeft tenminste de lokale media je ontdekt en staat er een camera voor je neus.

It is hard to used to the fact that when you are a avid knitter, you get a lot of publicity. Just go to a café to knit and soon you will be discovered by at least the local media and a camera shows up in front of you.

De laatste tijd was het weer flink raak, ook in de kranten. Tijdens de Handwerkbeurs in Rotterdam besteedde het AD maar liefst twee volle pagina’s aan de breitrend. Afgelopen vrijdag  stond de Afstap uitgebreid in de Metro in het kader van het koude weer. Ik stond toevallig achter de toonbank en introduceerde daar spontaan een nieuwe term: ‘breierig’. Maar het grappigst vond ik het artikel in de Postimees, een Estlandse krant, die ik verleden week toegestuurd kreeg door Monika vanuit Tallinn. In juni breiden we mee met de WWKIP Day in een park in Tallinn. Een joekel van een foto plus een voor ons onleesbaar artikel verscheen pontifikaal op pagina 3. En nu maar hopen dat ik niets geks heb gezegd! 😉

Lately this was the case, also in the written media. During the Handwerkbeurs in Rotterdam the AD (one of the most important papers in the Netherlands) filled two full pages to the knitting trend. Last Friday, when it snowed, the Afstap was the subject of an article in Metro (a free newspaper distributed in the public transportation). I happen to be behind the counter and introduced spontaneously a brandnew expression: ‘breierig’ (eager to knit…..). But the funniest was the artikel in Postimees, an Estonian newspaper, that Monika from Tallinn has send to me last week. In June we knitted along for WWKIP Day in a park in Tallinn. A huge photo of plus a artikel we can’t read appeared pontifical on page 3. Let’s hope I didn’t say anything silly! 😉

Vandaag is het WWKIP Day. Of eigenlijk, de hele week al, maar in Nederland KIP-pen we altijd op de derde zaterdag van de maand juni. Tijdens onze breistudieweek in Tallinn werd in het park in het centrum van de stad en tegenover ons hotel de KIP-dag gehouden. En wij werden uitgenodigd om daaraan deel te nemen. Ana, die we verleden jaar al ontmoette in Nederland, was er ook. En wat cursisten van onze workshop Twined Knitting in Loovala, waaronder Terje, twijnden er lustig op los.

Today it is WWKIP Day. Or in fact, it is all week long, but in the Netherlands we KIP always on the third Saturday of the month June. During our knitting study week in Tallinn the KIP Day was held in the park in the center of town, opposite our hotel. And we were invited to join in. Ana, who we met last year in the Netherlands, was there too. And some students of the workshop workshop Twined Knitting in Loovala, among them Terje, twined knitted along.

Het evenement, waaraan zo’n dertig breiers, waaronder wij met z’n achten, deelnamen, trok veel media-aandacht. Mijn naam wordt zelfs genoemd in dit artikel in de Tarbija. Ook gaf ik een interview voor de Estlandse en de Russische tv. Ik heb daar dus in mijn eentje en in het Engels de traditionele Estlandse breikunst de hemel in geprezen en de wens uitgesproken dat de Estlanders daar (nog) meer aandacht aan geven en het gebruiken om het prachtige land beter op de kaart te zetten. En dat wij speciaal voor het breien daarvoor met tien breiers vanuit Nederland naar Estland waren gekomen.

The event with about thirty knitters (there were eight of us), attracted a lot of media attention. My name was even mentioned in this articlein the Tarbija. I even gave an interview for the Estonian and Russian TV. So on my own and in the English language I praised the traditional Estonian knitting. I hope that the Estonians will treasure this heritage and will use it to promote their beautiful country. And that we came from the Netherlands with ten knitters, especially for the knitting.

De journalist vroeg hoe je mijn naam schrijft in Cyrillische tekens. Je komt nog eens ergens als je breit, maar je krijgt ook hele gekke vragen. Ik ben benieuwd waar en wanneer het wordt uitgezonden. Terje en Monika hebben beloofd om te gaan zoeken naar het interview op internet. Mocht je iets vinden……

The journalist asked how you write your name in Cyrillic signs. When you knit you travel a lot, but also you get some weird questions. I hope to find out where and when it is broadcasted. Terje and Monika have promised to search for the interview on the internet. But if you find something……

Op 9 juni wordt er wereldwijd geKIPt, oftewel, we doen aan Knitting in Publiek (Breien in het Openbaar). In Tilburg, Amsterdam en nog meer plaatsen in Nederland werd in winkels, op terrassen en zo gebreid. Maar omdat de uitverkoop van de Schapekop in Nieuwpoort vandaag startte, pasten wij ons WWKIP-Day-programma aan en KIPten we in Nieuwpoort op een terrasje in het centrum van het dorpje waar we bijna een botsingen veroorzaakten met onze breiende verschijning…….

Ja, ik weet dat het lijkt alsof er een portie friet uit mijn hoofd groeit. 😉

On June 9th knitters all over te world KIP, or do Knitting in Public. In Tilburg, Amsterdam and some other towns there is knitting in shops, in cafés and other places. But the sale started in the Schapekop in Nieuwpoort, so we made some adjustments to our WWKIP-Day program and did some KIPping on a terrace in the little town where we almost caused some car crashes…….

Yes, I know it looks like fries are growing on my head. 😉
