Two years ago, in Stockholm, I saw beautiful Lovikka-mittens. These mittens are knitted from thick untwisted wool, which is brushed up after knitting with a cardig brush until a thick warm fluffy layer appears. Colored embroidery on the cuff give them an extra cheerful accent. Put them on and it’s like stepping into a warm bath.

Lovikka-mitts are, according to tradition, first knitted in 1892 by Erika Aittamaa (1866–1952) in, you guessed it right, Lovikka. This village in the far north of Sweden gave its name to the mittens. Erika knitted for the local people to earn some money for her family. When she messed up a order for super warm and sustainable mittens, she washed and brushed the results and so the typical fluffy fabric was created, that made Lovikka-mittens famous. Erika made a folded edge and decorated these cuffs with embroidery with colorful yarn. This created an iconic mitten that everyone instantly associate with Sweden.

I liked them instantly and thought they were great fun, but as opinionated knitter I didn’t buy them and at home made my own version with some technical improvements plus a matching hat. There are many different patterns, but every designer gives the mittens their own touch by differences in the embroidery. I chose for my first set the typical Sami colour white with red, blue and yellow embroidery. But they are also great in other colors, such as red with gray. White embroidery on a white background makes them stylish and chique. You should not leave out the cord with tassel, because that gives them an extra nice authentic appearance. Picture them hanging on their cord for a crackling fire, while outside the snow is meters high, the reindeer walking around the chalet and in the distant you hear the howl of the wolves?

The pattern for the mittens in size S, M and L plus the hat in S/M and M/L in Dutch or English can be ordered at The Dutch Knitters or on Ravelry.
Thanks Mieke for test knitting them!

On Friday 29 and Saturday 30 May De Schapekop in Newport (near silver city Schoonhoven) organizes the Knitting and Crochet Festival. For two days, the beautiful historic town will be turned into handicraft paradise. There will be workshops, including two of my colleagues Hannek Bezem, and I’m present from 13.00 to 16.00 h. for signing my book So Warm!. Of course I will bring some of the designs from the book, and I’ll show you the essence of twined knitting. You can also try yourself on one of the practice workswhich I take. See you later!

Jan and I visited the ABBA museum in Stockholm following the tip from Anke. She was right, even for those who are not a fan of ABBA it is a super fun and cheerful museum. Within an hour or so you’ll have a good idea of the hype that ABBA was then and how they broke up.

In the museum shop I bought it crochet kit. You can make a copy of the iconic song contest hat Agneta wore while singing Waterloo in 1974. So, even though I hate to wear glitter, I made this cute cap from the materials. Jan did extensive research on the Internet to find out how should look like. In the package were missing some sparklers, I had get a few of these to finish it.

There was a lot of authentic clothing of the four artists in this museum, great to see. And Jan could sit in the original helicopter from the album Arrival and sing karaoke.

Stockholm!

Stockholm! Such a great city!

Jan and I were there for more as a week during the holiday season. It started out as just a nice week holidays to celebrate ewhere the changing of the years, but it ended up with a lot of knitting related stuff. With my new buddy Maria Gustafsson I visited the main yarn shops, hemslojden and the Nordiska Museet. Mary is in Sweden especially known for her beautiful knitting patterns. For me it was also a relief that she was happy with her copy of So Warm! that she had previously purchased through the Ullcentrum. We have seen wonderful traditional old knitting in the Nordiska Museet and many shops and together we had such a lovely day. From the Museum Island we took the boat to Gamla Stan, the old town center, where we walked over the bridges of Slussen to Södermalm where yarn shop is located that she founded: Litet Nystan. And we were so happy to find out that Ivar Asplund was working that day, he is one of the most famous twined knitters of Sweden. This shop really is the highlight for every knitter who goes to Stochkholm, a mecca of both traditional and modern luxury yarns. I bought some Z-ply made by Z-garn and some unbranded but beautiful thick white yarn for knitting Lovikka-mittens.

Fortunately, the knitters of Stockholm came also between Christmas and jaarswisseling together in cafe Belmonte. I was welcome to knit with them and enjoyed the atmosphere and seeing everyone’s work. The biggest surprise was that Kerstin and her daughter Stine, who I met already during Wool Week in Shetland, even came all the way from their hometown Uppsala for the reunion. The Latvian Dace and her two classmates Katrina and Karin, who just before our trip on the advice of Karen Kahnlund So Warm! had bought for her and two classmates were there. The entire balcony of the cafe filled with knitters!

Drie maal is scheepsrecht!

And last but not least, we had two incredibly c0incidental and one scheduled appointment with JC and his husband Mark to surprise Mark with me signing of So Warm! that he got for linguist JC got for Christmas. Learn Dutch for fun, he and I could email and talk Dutch.
If you met each other three times in the same hemslojden, this is meant to be. ‘Drie keer is scheepsrecht’ in Dutch, which means that every special thing should be done three times, which makes it special!

Anyway, it was not just about  knitting enough, we also have delicious geshopd, wandered around the city, enjoyed our glace of wine and marveled at the early setting sun. I bought a great Danish raincoat, Jan a fur hat and I also have a crochet kit. Yes, a crochet kit. Later on more about this kit…

All in all a great trip, thanks to the delightful hotel where we had a lovely large suite, the very cold weather with occasional snow, the kindness of many Swedes, the magnificent palaces (Kungliga Slottet on Gamla Stan and Drottningsholm on the outskirts of Stockholm) and the sensational sale. And the delicious herring which Jan doesn’t like at all, but withI love. New Year’s we spend on the bridge of Slussen, where across the water the fireworks were very organized and safe. Warm and super romantic, with many layers of clothing, fur boots, hats and mittens and a hip-flask of whiskey from whitch we both took a sip now and then… just to prevent getting cold. 😉

It was cosy and  so warm in Wolboerderij Blij Bezuiden. Janny had the coffee ready for over twenty guests who had all come for the book launch So Warm! They wanted to know more about the book, the technique and what you can with it. I brought all of the projects (over 30!) with me, so that everyone could check them out and choose which would be the first project to start. After lunch everyone went back home, with So Warm! under their arm. Heleen won the lotery for the first time in her life. The price was a So Warm! mug. Some of them immediately signed up for the workshop Twined Knitting for Beginners at the Wolboerderij on Saturday 31st January.

I then went to Tikkeltje Zeeuws, the webshop of Atelier Jaffari in Arnemuiden. In the shop at the market you can hear the church bells from the opposing church. (There is a Dutch song about these bells, which made this little church and village famous.) Soon there will be a book published about Zeeland fisherman sweaters. I have already signed up for the presale, you get a six euro discount!

Truus’ grandmother Aaltje’s mitt

A few days ago an envelope landed on my doormat with a soft ‘plof’. Truus, my dear Afstap colleague, who gave me a beautiful bootie, knitted by her grandmother Aaltjes Jaspers,as a thank you for giving Het Betere Breiwerk (Advanced Knitting), had sent me a beautiful mitt, also knitted by Aaltje. This time she did this to let me know that she was happy with the copy of So Warm! I had given her. Grandmother Aaltje mittened knitted the mitt in 1890 for her education at the technical school in Rotterdam. There is clearly a link with So Warm! because the thumb gusset this mitainetje has also increases on only one side, like the mitaines in So Warm!. Truus also enclosed a very sweet card. Thank you dear Truus, I’m so happy with the mitt and your sweet words.

After a year of very hard work, it’s time to party! Last Saturday was the book launch of So Warm! in the Afstap in Amsterdam. Family, friends, costumers of the Afstap, some Swedish knitters who happen to be there, test knitters, proofreaders, others who helped me making the book and hot shots from the knitting world were present, so it was pretty full on the cozy mezzanine. They came from far, even from Belgium and Friesland, and from close by, like a couple of knitters from the cosy knitting group SnB de Pijp Amsterdam. Afstap colleague Hanneke, who designed the gorgeous knitting bag for So Warm! was there also, as was Jans, whose speech still makes me feel a little shy. I myself told about the origin of So Warm!, and then I presented the first copy to my beloved mother in law Margreet van Alphen. Greetje, for friends….

Man Jan redesigned the window display and mezzanine for this occasion and earned much success with his work. What I didn’t expected was that I would get loads of presents; parfum, chocolate, alcoholic treats and lovely handmade things, how well my family members and  friends know what I like!

And now … still with a blissful ‘day after’ feeling I sit quietly at home, preparing for to the next job! But what that is going to be, I will not tell you about it yet.

If you want to have your own copy of So Warm!, you can buy it at the Afstap or another yarn shop, or order it online at The Dutch Knitters.

The amount of visitors, reactions and sales in the Breidagen exceeded my wildest expectations. The atmosphore soon was cheerful, especially when many friends came along. Yuichi Kaneko (Clover) was also there to receive his book and So Warm mug. But I can’t  recall what it was that we laughed about. Thanks Hanneke Bezem  for these two nice photos! And my dear husband Jan for the rest of the photos!

Proost!!

Today was the first day Nice Warm! was for sale. The Breidagen in Zwolle, festive days for all knitters of the Netherlands, were busy, cozy and inspiring. Tineke Beuving – van der Boom from Beilen bought the first copy and that joyous occasion of course had to be immortalized.

Utrecht, 24 oktober 2014 – Lekker Warm!

PRESS RELEASE

“So Warm!“, twined knitting made accessible to a wide audience by Carla Meijsen

Utrecht, 24 October, 2014 – So Warm! – Twined Knitting is the first bilingual book (English and Dutch) on twined knitting. With the publication of So Warm!, Carla Meijsen spreads her enthusiasm and makes the originally-Swedish technique and tradition accessible to a wide audience, both in the Netherlands and worldwide.

Twined knitting is a Scandinavian knitting technique that is at least 400 years old, has many unique characteristics and offers a range of decorative possibilities. Experienced knitters will certainly find a new challenge in twined knitting, and the less-experienced can learn to master the technique using the detailed instructions and many photos.

Carla Meijsen prepared for writing So Warm! by means of thorough literature study and several study trips to Sweden, the birthplace of this technique. Since 2008, she has written articles, designed twined knitwear and given workshops on twined knitting in the Netherlands and abroad. The experiences she gained while doing these activities proved to be a thorough and also practical preparation for writing So Warm!

So Warm! contains over 30 patterns for wrist warmers, mittens, mitts, gloves, hats, socks, leg warmers, boot toppers and accessories, including some designs by Hanneke Bezem and Hilly van der Sluis. All patterns have clear descriptions and detailed charts. Both traditional and modern knitting methods, such as the Turkish cast-on, are incorporated in the designs, based on a modern take on an old tradition.

I work so hard… the result of many hours of hard labour is now neatly put into five thick document folders. And for those who did not know. I’m writing a book about twined knitting.

There is a time to cast on and a time to bind off…

I sometimes do a lot of cast ons and sometimes I finished several projects. De Orenburg Scarf is just finished. The Bohus Stickning Forest Darkness wrist wamers were unfineshed for over three years, not even ready for 25%. But knit like hell only one Sunday and the are ready! Just like my Norok (my pattern Dutch Touch in Superstar Knitting written by Debbie Stoller). For weeks my knitting friends saw me working on it on Tuesday night at Stitch ‘n Bitch. It was forbidden to work on it at home, as it was the perfect no-brainer for in the pub. But I do hope that we will first get some sun before I can wear it.

The Orenburg Gossamer Scarf in Másima blue knitted itself, as it was made of such smooth and soft cashmere. I still have a couple of balls left, as such a scarf is not compleet without a pair of mitaines and maybe even a little hat.

The Swedish island Öland is wonderful, of that fact I was convinced last month when I was also there. But it is nothing compared to how the island looks now in spring green with the colours of so many flowers on the alvarets (stone steps) and everywhere you look. The delay of the start of spring gives an explosion of growth. Orchids everywhere, flowers along the roads, lily of the valley and mainly a lot of purple and white lilac. The whole island smelled heavenly like the linnen closet of my grandmother, where she kept her flower scented bars of soap. Ann’s new chicken I saw still in the egg last month, but were now walking in the gardens of Ann’s lovely hoouse. A lot of Viking culture, the big Borgholm castle and Solliden (the summer palace of the royals) with sunny stylish gardens. To stay in Ann’s cosy summerhome with strawberry curtain in the kitchen was so nice. Everywhere you can eat good food; cakes, bread with cumminseed and delicious fish. Thàt, combined with a visit to Ullcentrum and the many Hemslöjden and other nice shops where you can buy great things, make the island to a summer paradise.

Hardly returned from a fantastic knitting trip to Estonia, and off I go again. This time with Jan to Zweden. We went to Lund to visit our dear friends who live there and then to Öland as I think that is such a beautiful island and I loved showing it to Jan. On the way back we travelled through Denmark, where we spent the night in the beautiful old town Ribe. The stay in the nice little appartment was booking on the internet. To my surprise I soon got an email with instructions for the big freezer in the appartment. And where to put our fishing rods… It appeared to be a real wooden fishing appartment, but fortunately we that bothered us not much and we were happy with the huge freezer that cooled our white wine in no time. 😉

Lund is a nice university town with a beautiful cathedrale and a well assorted yarn shop. In Malmö, where recently the Songfestival was organized, our friends showed us a new neighbourhood with modern architecture and well situated along the water. We were lucky, was the big flowershow was held during our stay there. There was a competition garden design. Of course I wanted the knitting garden to win… Unfortunately we didn’t meet Lena’s mother, but we did saw her photo in the magazine that was just published, knitting… just like Lena’s and Emil’s stylish house and beautiful garden in a magazine about interieurs of houses.

Denemarken was onverwacht leuk.

Denamerk was unexpectedly nice. Before I thought only of Lego when Denmark was mentioned, but the country has a lot more to offer. In Tønder we coïncedently walked into the lace museum and in Ribe we found a big yarn shop and a small and very cute shop of the Danish designer Marianne Østergaard. Her style of work resemble the work of Christel Seyfarth, Kaffe Fassett and Hanne Falkenberg. Flowers à la Marimekko and stripes in well choosen colour combinations lift your spirit immidiately. Feeling better from knitting and seeing ready made knitwear, isn’t that we want from our hobby…

When you knit, you get to see places! I have been saying this for many years now, because when I started Stitching ‘n Bitching I introduced the term ‘knitting trip’ and suited the action to the word with some cautious trips to Paris and London. The attention soon shifted to the northern countries, such as Norway, Sweden and the Baltic States, among which Estonia, for in the colder regions more people are knitting and therefor these regions are more interesting for knitters.

Last year we went to the Dalarnas region in Sweden and now it was Öland‘s turn. Öland is a beautiful island in the south-east of Sweden. It is big enough to offer variety and small enough to get the genuine feeling of being on an island. The flight to Copenhagen shortened the trip considerably. From there we continued by rental car, crossing the enormous bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden and cutting straight through the south of Sweden to Öland.

Hartverwarmend!

The reason for our trip was a visit to the Ullcentrum together with where the Ullcentrum (blog) yarn can be bought. Ullcentrum is also the supplier of the yarns I am knitting with like crazy at the moment for my new book about the traditional Swedish knitting technique twined knitting. For this technique special yarn is required and Ullcentrum offers it. There is a Butik, a well-assorted shop, they offer knitted garments, craft books, very nice felted home accessories, sheep skins, sheep wool and yarns as well as the Z-plied yarns we use. And they are só kind! Owner Ann, her daughter and the employees of the company welcomed us with open arms. We were invited to use the enormous summer house in Persnäs. The felted slippers were already there for us in the hall. In the kitchen we found a fridge full of delicious stuff. The last evening Ann brought us delicious salmon, potatoes and salad and cooked us a festive candlelit meal. We were made feel so very welcome and enormously spoiled. Heatwarming!

Thanks to our rental car we could see the entire island that is 140 kilometres long in the few days that we were there. We went from south to north, making lots of pictures along the way of the beautiful landscape and the typical Swedish elements of which a number will undoubtedly end up in our book. We saw gigantic hares, deer, birds, sheep with little lambs and even fallow deer on the Alvaret (typical Öland stone plains with swampy vegetation). Windmills, yellow and red wooden houses and entire carpets of little blue flowers make the landscape typically Swedish. All this surrounded by a blue-grey sky and beaches scattered with stones and boulders, overgrown with mosses that thrive in the clean air.

On our way back to Copenhagen we visited Martijn, a dear family friend, who spoiled us with coffee and raspberry chocolate. Fortunately he understood our knitters’ need to combine our flying visit with a visit to the local yarn shop and the book store in Lund. But anyone who has seen and bought so many yarns already is no longer very impressed by the ‘normal’ yarn shop, especially with the next knitting trip coming closer.

But also all vendors, workshop teachers and demonstrators like us, have worked very hard for four days to give the visitors a fantastic day. Mrs Grevers wore her traditional costum of region Gelderland, but when she left she changed her cotton hat for a more modern version. One visitor showed of her cardigan with sheep and dogs were driven around in fancy doggy prams.

But believe me, four days is so much more than three… I was very tired but contented Sunday evening and today’s my day off! Or shall I do work on our book for a bit after all?
