In Shetland hebben zelfs de puffins en vuurtorens gebreide truitjes aan. De zachte poetsdoekjes waarop ze zijn afgebeeld zijn ideaal voor het schoonmaken van je bril. Ik heb er natuurlijk ook een paar. Eén met vuurtorens om iedere dag te worden herinnerd aan de prachtige architectuur van Robert Stevenson. Na deze reis heb ik in drie ervan geslapen en heb ik ze waarschijnlijk op één na (Outer Skerries) allemaal gezien. Voor mijn leesbril heb ik een toepasselijk lapje van lace (kant) breiwerk. 😉

In Shetland even the puffins and lighthouses wear knitted sweaters. The soft wipes on which they are displayed are ideal for cleaning your glasses. Of course I have some of those wipes too. One with lighthouses to be reminded every day of the beautiful architecture of Robert Stevenson. After this trip I will have I slept in three of the lighthouses and I probably saw them all except for one (Outer Skerries). For my reading glasses I have an appropriate wipe with an image of lace knitting (in Dutch the pronounciation of ‘lace’ and ‘lees’, which means ‘read’ are exactly the same ;-).

Het kost even wat tijd en energie, maar dan heb je ook wat. Verleden jaar augustus kocht ik bij Jamieson & Smith in Lerwick (Shetland) zes bollen Lace Supreme 2Ply voor een Cockle Shell shawl. De techniek van het breien van een Cockle Shell shawl leerde ik twee jaar geleden in het Unst Heritage Centre tijdens Wool Week en ik wilde toen al zelf zo’n prachtige traditionele shawl breien. Het breiwerk vorderde langzaam, want ik breide er vrijwel alleen onderweg en in de kroeg aan. Het belandde zelfs nóg een keer in Shetland toen het tijdens mijn verblijf daar als Artist in Residence daar met Jan een maand in Sumburgh Head verbleef. Maar nu is het eindelijk af! Ik was het ook wel een beetje zat, want er zitten maar liefst 48 rijen van 5 schelpen in, dat is dus 240 stuks, en dat op naalden van 2,5 mm! Overigens is er wel discussie over of dit nu kokkels, Jacobsschelp, venusschelpen of nog iets anders zijn. Wie het weet, mag het zeggen!

De twee delen zijn afzonderlijk gebreid en met de Kitchener Stitch aan elkaar gemaasd. De schelpjes zijn cockle shells die je in Shetland met een beetje mazzel gewoon op het strand kan vinden. Uiteindelijk zijn er vier bollen verbruikt voor de shawl, terwijl hij toch een stuk groter is geworden als de kleine, smallere shawltjes die je in Shetland kant en klaar gebreid kan kopen. Het patroon komt uit A Legacy of Lace van het Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers, and Dyers.

It takes some time and energy, but then you have some great. Last year August I bought at Jamieson & Smith in Lerwick (Shetland) six balls of Supreme Lace 2ply for a Cockle Shell shawl. The technique of knitting a Cockle Shell shawl I learned on Unst two years ago at the Unst Heritage Centre during Wool Week and since then I wanted to knit such a beautiful traditional shawl myself. The knitting progressed slowly because I knitted it only on the road and in the pub. It even ended up a second time in Shetland when I stayed in Sumburgh as Artist in Residence with Jan and spend a month at Sumburgh Head. But now it’s finally finished! I was a little bored by it, because there are as many as 48 rows with five shells, which gives 240 shells, all knitted with needles 2.5 mm! Btw, there is some discussion going on about the name of the shells, is it the cockle shell, scallop, clam or maybe something else? If you know, lets hear it!

The two parts are knitted separately and with the Kitchener Stitch grafted together. The shells are cockle shells that, with a little luck, you can find in Shetland on the beach. There are four balls used for the shawl, yet it has become much larger than the small, narrow shawls you can buy in Shetland. The pattern is from A Legacy of Lace in the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers, and Dyers.

Ooit kreeg ik van Monika het beroemde en zeer moeilijk te vinden boek van Linda Elgas. Ik was er als een kind zo blij mee, zodat Monika en ik alle momenten van pure blijdschap omdoopten tot Linda Elgas Moments. Verleden week had ik er weer eentje….

Op de tweede dag van onze reis gingen we met twee huurauto’s naar Haapsalu voor een bezoek aan het nieuwe Lace Center, het beeldschone stadje en de wolwinkeltjes. Bij het Lace Center werden we hartelijk ontvangen door Monika (nee, niet de ‘onze’, maar een medewerker van het centrum). Een heerlijke grote ruimte waar alle kantbreisels een mooie plek hebben gekregen en een museumwinkel. Er is ook plaats voor een kleine expositie, in dit geval van een moeder en dochter. Bij de ingang zaten wat oudere dames gezellig te breien, onder wie Aasa Joelaid, de ontwerpster van de kantpatronen in het boek Knitted Shawls of Aasa Joelaid… én Linda Elgas. Eindelijk, na pakweg vijf jaar, kon ik de Grande Dame van het Haapsalu kant persoonlijk ontmoeten! Een Real Life Linda Elgas Moment! Monika vertaalde voor ons dat ik ongelooflijk blij ben met mijn Haapsalu shawl in gesigneerde doos die zij speciaal voor mij heeft gebreid twee jaar geleden. Maar de breisters waren ook heel geïnteresseerd in de twijnend gebreide wanten en vooral ook in mijn Shetland shawl. Na het bestuderen van alle patronen en de breitechniek, meette Linda ‘m nog even aan het lichaam af. ‘Twee meter’, concludeerde ze tevreden.

Na een heerlijke lunch in ons ‘vaste’ restaurantje, bezoek aan diverse (wol)winkeltjes en een wandeling door het stadje en over de boulevard, reden we terug naar Tallinn.

Lieve breisters van het Haapsalu Lace Center, dank jullie wel voor de hartelijke ontvangst en de bijzondere ontmoeting. Tot snel!

Some time ago Monika gave me a  famous and very hard to find book by Linda Elgas. I was happy as a little kid, so after that Monika and I called all moments of pure joy Linda Elgas Moments. Last week I had such an experience again ….

On the second day of our trip we drove with two rental cars to Haapsalu to visit the new Lace Center, the beautiful little town and the wool shops. At the Lace Center we were warmly received by Monika (no, not “our” Monika, but an employee of the center). A nice big space, where the lacy knitwear was beautifully displayed and a museum shop. There is also a space for a small exposition, at this moment the work of a mother and her daughther is displayed there. At the entrance sat some elderly ladies knitting together, including Aasa Joelaid, the designer of the lace patterns in Knitted Shawls of Aasa Joelaid … ánd Linda Elgas. Finally, after about five years, I could personally meet the Grande Dame of the Haapsalu lace! A Real Life Linda Elgas Moment! Monika translated for us that I am incredibly happy with my Haapsalu shawl in autographed box she knitted especially for me two years ago. But the knitters were also very interested in the twined knitted mittens and especially in my Shetland shawl. After studying all the patterns and the knitting technique, Linda was measuring him with her own body. “Two meter,” she concluded in satisfied tone of voice.

After a delicious lunch in our ‘regular’ restaurant, visiting various (wool) shops and a stroll through the town and along the promenade, we drove back to Tallinn.

Heel Nieuwpoort deed mee. De medewerkers van De Schapekop mochten vrijwel alle huizen en bedrijven in het centrum van het historische stadje versieren met brei- en haakwerk. Dassen, shawls, dekens, truien, alles was uit de kast getrokken, om standbeelden geslagen, als rode lopers uitgerold of zelfs – letterlijk, als drijvend object – in het water gegooid.

Ik heb twee middagen in het Arsenaal op het podium doorgebracht, kletsend met bezoekers, ondertussen ze vertellend over twijnend breien, Haapsalu shawls, mijn boeken en Het Betere Breiwerk. Natuurlijk af en toe even signeren en de geïnteresseerden een toertje twijnend laten breien. Velen schreven zich snel in voor mijn workshops op 23 en 30 januari of voor Het Betere Breiwerk in het najaar in de Schapekop.

Twee dagen vliegen om, vooral al het zo gezellig is. Hanneke Bezem, die ook les gaf tijdens het festival, Jan en ik hebben na afloop op het terras in de zon getoost met thee, wijn en appeltaart op het succes van het evenement. En nu maar hopen dat de Schapekop over twee jaar dit fantastische festijn opnieuw gaat organiseren! Carina, medewerkers van de Schapekop, docenten en alle vrijwilligers, bedankt voor jullie harde werken om dit evenement te laten slagen! Top!

All inhabitants of Nieuwpoort participated. The employees of De Schapekop had decorated almost all homes and businesses in the center of the historic town with knitted and crocheted handicrafts. Scarves, shawls, blankets, sweaters, everything was pulled out of the closets, thrown  on statues, rolled out like red carpets or even if – literally, as floating objects – thrown into the water.

I spent two afternoons on the podium in the Arsenal (historical building), chatting with visitors, meanwhile telling them about twined knitting, Haapsalu shawls, my books and my Advanced Knitting Course. Of course every now and then I had to sign books and had those interested in twined knitting knit some rows. Many subscribed quickly for my workshops on 23 and 30 January or even enlisted for the Advanced Knitting Course in autumn in the Schapekop.

These two days fly by, especially if it is so cozy. Hanneke Bezem, also a teacher at the festival, Jan and I said ‘cheers’ with tea, wine and apple pie to celebrate the success of the event. Let’s hope that the Schapekop will again organize this great festival in 2017! Op 14 april legde ik de laatste hand aan de shawl waar ik al in november vorig jaar aan was begonnen. Het was dan ook een hele klus, vooral als je het best wel druk hebt.

Garen: Wensleydale cobweb 2-draads kantgaren van de Sheep Shop in Yorkshire, Engeland (niet meer in productie). Mogelijk levert het dunne Gotland-garen van Lidaholm een vergelijkbaar (iets dikker) resultaat. Of neem Mora van de Afstap.
Patronen: The Haapsalu Scarf – Aimee Edasi & Siiri Reimann – Uitgeverij Saara (Lily of the Valley)

On April 14, I put the finishing touches to the shawl which I started last year in November. It was a daunting task, especially if you’re pretty busy.

Yarn: Wensleydale cobweb 2-ply lace yarn Sheep Shop in Yorkshire, England (no longer in production). Possibly the thin thread of Gotland Lidaholm provides a similar (slightly thicker) result. Or use the Swedish yarn Mora sold at the Afstap.

Stockholm! Wat een geweldige stad!

Jan en ik waren er dik een week rond de jaarswisseling. Het begon als gewoon lekker een week weg om elders oudejaar te vieren, maar het kreeg uiteindelijk een behoorlijk hoog breigehalte. Met mijn nieuwe maatje Maria Gustafsson bezocht ik de belangrijkste wolwinkels, hemslojden en het Nordiska Museet. Maria is in Zweden met name bekend om haar prachtige breipatronen. Het was voor mij dan ook een hele opluchting dat zij blij was met haar exemplaar van Lekker Warm! dat ze al eerder via het Ullcentrum had aangeschaft. We hebben prachtig traditioneel oud breiwerk gezien in het Nordiska museum en de vele winkeltjes en samen een heerlijk dagje gehad. Vanaf het museumeiland namen we de boot naar Gamla Stan, het oude centrum van de stad, waar we de bruggetjes van de Slussen overliepen naar Södermalm waar zich de door haar opgerichte wolwinkel bevindt: Litet Nystan. En wat een gelukkie, daar werkte toevallig die dag Ivar Asplund, één van de bekendste twijnend breiers van Zweden. Deze winkel is echt het hoogtepunt voor iedere breier die naar Stochkholm gaat, een mekka van zowel traditionele als moderne luxe garens. Ik nam er Z-getwijnd garen mee van Z-garn en wat topkwaliteit maar merkloos dik wit garen zonder merk voor Lovikka-wanten.

Stockholm! Such a great city!

Jan and I were there for more as a week during the holiday season. It started out as just a nice week holidays to celebrate ewhere the changing of the years, but it ended up with a lot of knitting related stuff. With my new buddy Maria Gustafsson I visited the main yarn shops, hemslojden and the Nordiska Museet. Mary is in Sweden especially known for her beautiful knitting patterns. For me it was also a relief that she was happy with her copy of So Warm! that she had previously purchased through the Ullcentrum. We have seen wonderful traditional old knitting in the Nordiska Museet and many shops and together we had such a lovely day. From the Museum Island we took the boat to Gamla Stan, the old town center, where we walked over the bridges of Slussen to Södermalm where yarn shop is located that she founded: Litet Nystan. And we were so happy to find out that Ivar Asplund was working that day, he is one of the most famous twined knitters of Sweden. This shop really is the highlight for every knitter who goes to Stochkholm, a mecca of both traditional and modern luxury yarns. I bought some Z-ply made by Z-garn and some unbranded but beautiful thick white yarn for knitting Lovikka-mittens.

Gelukkig kwamen de breiers van Stockholm ook tussen kerst en de jaarswisseling bij elkaar in café Belmonte. Ik was welkom om mee te breien en heb genoten van de gezelligheid en het zien van ieders werk. De grootste verrassing was dat Kerstin en haar dochter Stine, die ik al tijdens Wool Week op Shetland al ontmoette, ook helemaal vanuit hun woonplaats Uppsala waren gekomen voor het weerzien. Ook de Letse Dace en haar twee studiegenoten Katrina en Karin, die vlak voor onze reis op advies van Karin Kahnlund Lekker Warm! had aangeschaft voor haar en twee studiegenoten, waren er. Het hele balkon van het café gevuld met breiers!

Fortunately, the knitters of Stockholm came also between Christmas and jaarswisseling together in cafe Belmonte. I was welcome to knit with them and enjoyed the atmosphere and seeing everyone’s work. The biggest surprise was that Kerstin and her daughter Stine, who I met already during Wool Week in Shetland, even came all the way from their hometown Uppsala for the reunion. The Latvian Dace and her two classmates Katrina and Karin, who just before our trip on the advice of Karen Kahnlund So Warm! had bought for her and two classmates were there. The entire balcony of the cafe filled with knitters!

En last but not least hadden we twee ongelooflijk toevallige en één geplande afspraak met JC en zijn echtgenoot Mark om Mark te verrassen met mijn signering van Lekker Warm! dat hij van talenwonder JC voor kerst kreeg. Voor de lol leert hij Nederlands, dus we konden lekker met elkaar in in het Nederlands mailen en praten.
Als je elkaar drie keer in dezelfde hemslojden ontmoet, dan moet dat zo zijn. Drie maal is scheepsrecht!

And last but not least, we had two incredibly c0incidental and one scheduled appointment with JC and his husband Mark to surprise Mark with me signing of So Warm! that he got for linguist JC got for Christmas. Learn Dutch for fun, he and I could email and talk Dutch.
If you met each other three times in the same hemslojden, this is meant to be. ‘Drie keer is scheepsrecht’ in Dutch, which means that every special thing should be done three times, which makes it special!

Maar goed, het ging niet alléén maar om breien hoor, we hebben ook heerlijk geshopd, gedwaald, genoten van wijntjes en ons verwonderd over de vroeg ondergaande zon. Ik kocht een geweldige Deense regenjas, Jan een bontmuts en ik ook nog een haakpakketje. Later meer over dit pakketje…

Al met al een heerlijke reis, mede dankzij het zalige hotel waar we een prachtige ruime suite hadden, het steenkoude weer met af en toe sneeuw, de vriendelijkheid van veel Zweden, de prachtige paleizen (Kungliga Slottet op Gamla Stan en Drottningsholm aan de rand van Stockholm) en de sensationele uitverkoop. En de lekkere haring waar Jan van griezelt, maar waar je mij voor wakker mag maken. Oudejaar maakten we mee vanaf de brug van Slussen, waar aan de overkant van het water het vuurwerk zeer georganiseerd en veilig werd afgestoken. Lekker warm en superromantisch, dankzij veel lagen kleding, bontlaarzen, mutsen en wanten én een heupflesje whiskey waar we gezellig om en om een teugje van namen,… tegen de kou. 😉

Anyway, it was not just about  knitting enough, we also have delicious geshopd, wandered around the city, enjoyed our glace of wine and marveled at the early setting sun. I bought a great Danish raincoat, Jan a fur hat and I also have a crochet kit. Yes, a crochet kit. Later on more about this kit…

All in all a great trip, thanks to the delightful hotel where we had a lovely large suite, the very cold weather with occasional snow, the kindness of many Swedes, the magnificent palaces (Kungliga Slottet on Gamla Stan and Drottningsholm on the outskirts of Stockholm) and the sensational sale. And the delicious herring which Jan doesn’t like at all, but withI love. New Year’s we spend on the bridge of Slussen, where across the water the fireworks were very organized and safe. Warm and super romantic, with many layers of clothing, fur boots, hats and mittens and a hip-flask of whiskey from whitch we both took a sip now and then… just to prevent getting cold. 😉
