Life 'n Knitting

Midwinterwol in Winschoten was een gewéldige ervaring. Lekker Warm! kon worden gekozen als welkomstgeschenk voor nieuwe abonnee’s, dus ik had men gezellig aangesloten bij de dames van Handwerken zonder Grenzen. Maar Karen uit Alaska mocht het boek zonder abonnement kopen. Om mij heen allemaal lieve dieren, twee hondjes van de achterbuurtjes en vlak naast ons drie schattige alpacaatjes. En zoveel vrienden uit de breiwereld gezien! Een excursist kwam haar twijnend gebreide wanten en Zeeuwse Ilse kwam haar PoesPas showen.

Midwinterwol Winschoten was a great experience. Lekker Warm! could be selected as a welcome gift for new subscribers, so I had it joined in with the ladies of Handwerken zonder Grenzen. But Karen from Alaska was allowed to buy the book without subscription. Around me all kind of lovely animals, two dogs of the neighborhoods behind and next to our stand three cute alpacas. And there were so many friends from the knitting world! A former student came to show her twined knitted mittens and Ilse from Zeeland came showing her Poespas.

Maar fris was het wel, dus kocht ik bij De Ullstee prachtige polswarmers en een hoofdband van Gotlandbont. ‘s Avonds in mijn appartement fotografeerde ik mezelf in de badkamerspiegel om man Jan mijn aanwinsten te laten zien en zette op zijn aanraden de foto toen ook op Facebook. Wat een leuke reacties! De volgende dag ging ik op de foto met het meisje van de stand van Jamieson and Smith, die ook al zo’n leuke hoofdband om had. Binnenkort kan ik mijn hoofdband ook goed gebruiken, maar daarover later meer…

But it was cold, so I bought some magnificent wrist warmers and a headband Gotland fur from De Ullstee. At night in my apartment I photographed myself in the bathroom mirror to show my husband Jan my gorgeous handband and, on his advice , I also place he photo on Facebook. What a nice comments! The next day I had a photo made with the girl from the stand of Jamieson and Smith, who also had such a nice headband. Soon, I can also use my headband, but more on that later…

Het was lekker warm bij Wolboerderij Blij Bezuiden. Janny had de koffie klaar staan voor ruim twintig gasten die allen waren gekomen voor de boekpresentatie van Lekker Warm! Ze wilden graag meer weten over het boek, de techniek en wat je ermee kan. Ik had alle projecten (meer dan 30!) bij me, zodat iedereen kon kijken en bedenken en alvast kon kiezen waaraan als eerste te beginnen. Na een lekkere lunch vertrok iedereen weer, met Lekker Warm! onder de arm, huiswaarts. Heleen won voor de eerste keer in haar leven een loterij, namelijk de Lekker Warm!-mok. Sommigen tekenden zich meteen in voor de workshop Twijnend Breien voor Beginners bij de Wolboerderij op zaterdag 31 januari.

It was cosy and  so warm in Wolboerderij Blij Bezuiden. Janny had the coffee ready for over twenty guests who had all come for the book launch So Warm! They wanted to know more about the book, the technique and what you can with it. I brought all of the projects (over 30!) with me, so that everyone could check them out and choose which would be the first project to start. After lunch everyone went back home, with So Warm! under their arm. Heleen won the lotery for the first time in her life. The price was a So Warm! mug. Some of them immediately signed up for the workshop Twined Knitting for Beginners at the Wolboerderij on Saturday 31st January.

Ik ging nog even door naar Tikkeltje Zeeuws, de webshop van Atelier Jaffari in Arnemuiden. In het winkeltje aan de markt kan je de kerkklokken van het er tegenover gelegen kerkje horen. Binnenkort komt er een boek over Zeeuwse visserstruien uit. Ik heb me al ingetekend voor de voorverkoop, dan krijg je maar liefst zes euro korting!

I then went to Tikkeltje Zeeuws, the webshop of Atelier Jaffari in Arnemuiden. In the shop at the market you can hear the church bells from the opposing church. (There is a Dutch song about these bells, which made this little church and village famous.) Soon there will be a book published about Zeeland fisherman sweaters. I have already signed up for the presale, you get a six euro discount!

Een paar dagen geleden landde er met een zachte plof een envelop op mijn deurmat. Truus, mijn lieve Afstap-collega, die mij al eerder een door haar oma Aaltje Jaspers gebreid slofje gaf, toen als dank voor het geven van Het Betere Breiwerk, had me een prachtig mitaine, wederom gebreid door haar oma Aaltje, gestuurd. Dit keer wilde ze me hiermee laten weten dat ze blij was met het exemplaar van Lekker Warm! dat ik haar had gegeven. Oma Aaltje heeft de mitaine gebreid in 1890 voor haar opleiding aan de industrieschool in Rotterdam. Er is duidelijk een link met Lekker Warm! want de duimspie van dit mitainetje heeft meerderingen aan één kant, net als de mitaines in Lekker Warm!. Bij het breiseltje zat nog een vreselijk lieve kaart van Truus. Dank je lieve Truus, ik ben verschrikkelijk blij met de mitaines en je lieve woorden!

A few days ago an envelope landed on my doormat with a soft ‘plof’. Truus, my dear Afstap colleague, who gave me a beautiful bootie, knitted by her grandmother Aaltjes Jaspers,as a thank you for giving Het Betere Breiwerk (Advanced Knitting), had sent me a beautiful mitt, also knitted by Aaltje. This time she did this to let me know that she was happy with the copy of So Warm! I had given her. Grandmother Aaltje mittened knitted the mitt in 1890 for her education at the technical school in Rotterdam. There is clearly a link with So Warm! because the thumb gusset this mitainetje has also increases on only one side, like the mitaines in So Warm!. Truus also enclosed a very sweet card. Thank you dear Truus, I’m so happy with the mitt and your sweet words. 

Mijn koffer staat klaar, de Shwook is gebreid en ik heb er zin in! Tien dagen lekker met zes vriendinnen naar de jaarlijkse Wool Week in Shetland. Iedere dag activiteiten als wolfabrieken bekijken, wol shoppen en vooral veel workshops. Een heerlijke afwisseling na het harde werken voor heb boek Lekker Warm! dat op 24 oktober wordt gepubliceerd.

Wat een Shwook is? Hazel Tindall ontwierp speciaal voor Wool Week een prachtige muts met Shetland-motiefjes. Ze voegde diverse kleurencombinaties toe, maar de meeste breiers zijn eigenwijs en breien hun eigen variatie. Ik ben zo benieuwd naar al die mutsen die iedereen zal dragen tijdens de openingsceremonie!

En groot nieuws, letterlijk en figuurlijk vers van de pers,… Lekker Warm!, mijn boek over twijnend breien is klaar! Alvast 30 dozen met 300 van de 2000 exemplaren staan nu in mijn berging. Natuurlijk gaan er een paar mee naar Shetland.

My suitcase is ready, the Shwook is knitted and I’m looking forward to the next ten days! I will spend these ten days with six girlfriends at the annual Wool Week in Shetland. Every day activities like  visiting wool mills, wool shopping and a lot of workshops. A delightful change from the hard work for have book SoWarm! that will be published on 24 October.

What is a Shwook? Hazel Tindall designed specifically for Wool Week a beautiful hat with Shetland motifs. She added various color combinations, but most knitters are stubborn and knit their own variation. I am so curious about all those hats that everyone will wear during the opening ceremony!

And great news, literally hot off the press,… So Warm!, my book on twined knitting is ready! About 30 boxes with 300 of the 2000 copies are now standing in my hall. Of course, I will take a couple of them with me to Shetland.

Het koffertje staat weer gepakt. De wekker is gezet. En ik heb er zin in! Een hele week met breivriendinnen Corry, Titia en Elsbeth naar Riga, Letland, voor de wantenconferentie. Menigeen die ik vertelde over de driedaagse wantenconferentie trok z’n wenkbrauwen op, maar de bezoekers van Life ‘n Knitting snappen het wel, denk ik zo…

Maar daar blijft het niet bij. Met een huurauto gaan we de dagen voor de start van de conferentie het land in voor allerlei breigerelateerde activiteiten en kennismakingen met veel Letse breiers. We hebben een prachtig programma, waar veel Letten aan hebben bijgedragen. Wat ‘n aardige mensen, die Letten, ik vind ze nu al leuk! Helemaal blij ben ik met de komst voor de conferentie van Monika  en een aantal andere breiers die ik in de loop der tijd met name in Estland heb leren kennen. Tot over een dikke week, houd Life ‘n Knitting dan goed in de gaten, want natuurlijk mogen jullie meegenieten van mijn ervaringen en foto’s.

My suitcase is packed again. The alarm clock is on. And I’m so excited! A whole week with knitting friends Corry, Titia and Elsbeth to Riga, Latvia, with as the main reason the mitten conference. Many people that I talked about the three-day mitten conference thought it was crazy to spend three days on this subject, but the visitors of Life ‘n Knitting understand that it just wonderful, I guess …

But that’s not all. With a rental car, we go the days before the start of the conference into the country for all kinds of knitting related activities and meeting Latvian knitters. We have a wonderful program, to which many Latvian knitters contributed. It seems that they are very nice people, the Lets, I think they so already! I’m totally happy with the arrival for the conference of Monika and some other knitters who I got to know over time, particularly in Estonia. MoniqueB houdt het bij, hoeveel nachtjes slapen het nog is tot we met z’n zevenen (Titia, Corry de B, Anke, Elsbeth, Marieke, MoniqueB en ik) vertrekken voor tien dagen Shetland. Vanaf 19 april vandaag nog #169 nachtjes. De grootste aanleiding voor onze reis naar het Mekka van het breien is de Wool Week van 4 tm 12 oktober. Er zijn dan allerlei w0l- en breigerelateerde activiteiten, waaronder workshops van # en #. We hebben uit het overvolle programma dat vandaag bekend is gemaakt, biedt genoeg om de week te vullen met veel leerzame en geweldig leuke activiteiten om uit te kiezen.

In 60 North, het digitale tijdschrift over Shetland, staat een interessant artikel over Wool Week. Diverse beroemde ontwerpers die de Shetlandse textiel tradities serieus nemen, vertellen over hoe ze traditie en modetrends met elkaar verbinden. Uit hun uitspraken is af te lezen dat ze liefde hebben voor de eilandengroep en de manier waarop de bewoners op integere wijze omgaan met wat de natuur hen geeft. Ze hechten aan het ophouden van de hoge standaarden voor de kwaliteit van hun grondstoffen en producten. En dat zie je, liefde en passie in ieder draadje en steekje.

MoniqueB keeps track on how many nights we have to sleep untill the seven of us (Titia , Corry B , Anke , Elsbeth , Marieke , MoniqueB and I) leave for ten days Shetland. As of April 19 today # 169 of nights. The main reason for our trip to the Mecca of knitting is Wool Week from 4 till 12 October. There are all sorts of yarn- and knitting related activities, including workshops given by # # . The crowded program was put online today, it offers enough to fill the week with lots of great educational and fun activities.

In 60 North , the digital magazine on Shetland, there is a interesting article about Wool Week. Several famous designers who take the Shetland textile traditions seriously, tell about how they combine tradition and fashion trends. It is obvious that they have lots of love for the islands and the way the people deal with integrity with what nature gives them. They hold on to the high standards for the quality of their raw materials and products. You can see that love and passion into every piece of yarn or stitch.

Twee dagen nadat de Koewachtse cursisten hun certificaat ontvingen, waren de cursisten van de Amsterdamse Bijna Betere Breiers bij de Afstap aan de beurt. Na bijna drie maanden hard werken en de focus op hun breitechniek zwaaiden ze vrolijk met hun certificaat voor de groepsfoto, hun hoofd stiekem vol plannen om eerst weer eens lekker recreatief te gaan breien, maar dan wél met alle nieuwe vaardigheden en inzichten. ‘Zelfgemaakt’ wordt ‘handgemaakt’, en dát is waar we naartoe moeten!

Ik sta er soms van te kijken wat cursisten ervoor over hebben om bij alle lessen te kunnen zijn. Vorig seizoen kwam Joke van het Ryahuis in Zuidlaren bij Groningen álle acht keer met een autootje vol naar de Randstad. Cathinka, die pas drie keer in haar leven in Amsterdam was, verdwaalde de eerste les van deze cursus volledig en belde mij dat ze bij een kasteel was en geen idee had hoe ze bij de Afstap moest komen. Het kasteel bleek later het het Rijksmuseum te zijn. Politieagenten die haar aanhielden omdat ze met haar auto midden op het trottoir stond, snapten de paniek omdat ze per se op tijd bij de breicursus moest zijn en brachten haar bijna tot bij de winkel. Politiebegeleiding om naar breiles te gaan! Gekker moet het niet worden…

En dan de laatste les, de regen viel met bakken uit de hemel, maar de cursisten hesen zich in regenpakken en trotseerden de storm. Een winkel vol druipende regenpakken en cursisten op kousenvoeten.
Sowieso, als je peperdure bedrijfscursussen geeft, komt soms een kwart van de cursisten niet opdagen, ze zijn ziek, zwak of misselijk of hebben belangrijkere zaken te doen. Maar bij Het Betere Breiwerk zijn ze er altijd allemaal, of ze zijn écht op leven na dood zijn of iets nóg belangrijkers hebben, bijvoorbeeld een kind of broer die wordt beëdigd of een al geplande vakantie. Dat zegt iets over hoe belangrijk ze de cursus vinden en daar ben ik best een beetje trots op… 😉

Beste Betere Breiers, een aantal van jullie ga ik over een poosje weer zien bij Het Hogere Breiwerk. Tot dan wens ik jullie heel veel succes met alles wat je breit en nogmaals, gefeliciteerd, doe er iets leuks mee!

Two days after the students in Koewacht received their certificate, the students  and Almost Better Knitters of the Amsterdam groep at the Afstap, had  their turn. After nearly three months of hard work and focus on their knitting technique they waved cheerfully with their certificate for the group photo, their heads full of secret plans to now start some nice recreational knitting, but this time with all the new skills and insights. ‘Homemade’ is now ‘handmade ‘, and that’s whati it is all about!

I am astonished to see what students do to to be able to attend all classes. Last season Joke of the Ryahuis  in Zuidlaren near Groningen (in the very North of the Netherlands) all of eight times with a toy car packed to the Randstad (center of country). Cathinka, who had been only three times in her life in Amsterdam, was lost when she tried to drive into Amsterdam for the first lesson of this course. Shecalled me and told me she saw a castle (which turned out to be the Rijksmuseum lateron). She was desperate to find the Afstap. Police officers who cought her parking on the sidewalk, understood her panic when she told them she really needed to be on time for the knitting course and brought her almost to the shop. Police guidance for going to knitting class! It can’t get any crazier…

And the night of the last lessen, the rain was pouring from the sky , but the students all put on raincoats and braved the storm. Dripping raincoats all over the shop and students on their socks. Anyhow, when I gave any expensive business course sometimes a quarter of the students do not show up, pretending to be sick or they just have more important stuff to do. But for my knititng course Het Betere Breiwerk they are always all present, or there is sume real serious going or, such as a child or sibling who is getting his diplom or a already booked holiday. That proofs to me how important they find the course and I’m quite proud of that… 😉

Dear Better Knitters , some of you I’m going to see you again in a little while at Het Hogere Breiwer (Senior Knitting). Until then I wish you good luck with everything you knit and again, congratulations, do something fun with it !

Gisteren gaf ik met hulp van Hanneke Bezem de laatste lesdag van Het Betere Breiwerk in Koewacht. De acht lessen waren in drie zeer intensieve lesdagen gepropt, maar omdat de zeer leergierige cursisten niéts wilden missen werkten ze zich in rap tempo door vrijwel alle lesstof heen. Ze hebben hun certificaat dan ook verdiend! Gefeliciteerd dames!

Ik kom met heel veel plezier al pakweg vijf jaar bij Janny op haar gezellige Wolboerderij Blij Bezuiden, waar het altijd gezellig is en Janny goed zorgt voor haar gasten. Want als er zo hard wordt gewerkt, moet je goed eten, drinken en snoepen. Dank je wel Janny! En tot snel… 😉

Yesterday I gave the last day of the course Het Betere Breiwerk (Advanced Knitting) with the help of Hanneke Bezem in Koewacht (Zeeland, South of the Netherlands, near Belgium). ​​The eight lessons were crammed into three very intensive training days, but because the very studious students were so eager to learn and did not want to miss anything they worked at a rapid pace through almost the whole curriculum. They really earned their certificate! Congratulations ladies!

I like coming for about five years now to Janny on her cozy Wolboerderij Blij Bezuiden. It is always a lot of fun and Janny takes good care of her guests, supplying them with drinks and and food to their liking. Students that work that hard need good food, drinks and sweets. Thank you Janny! And see you soon … 😉

Gisteren gaf ik de workshop Twijnend Breien Basistechnieken aan een groep van tien cursisten in het Drentse Rolde bij Knitted Knots. Ondanks dat het een heerlijke zomerse dag was, waren de cursisten maar met één ding bezig, zoveel mogelijk leren over deze prachtige oude Zweedse breitechniek. Van half 11 tm half 5 werd er stevig doorgebreid, wat resulteerde in tien prachtige beginnetjes van zakjes die aan het eind van de dag lagen te pronken op de tafel. Goed gedaan dames!

Yesterday I gave the workshop Twined Knitting Basic Techniques to a group of ten students in Rolde at Knitted Knots. Although it was a lovely summer day, the students were preoccupied with one thing. They wanted to learn as much as possible about this wonderful old Swedish knitting technique. From 10.30 tm 16.30 h. there knitted as hard as they could, what resulted in ten beautiful beginnings of mobile covers that they showed of on the table at the end of the day. Well done ladies!

Dit weekend zijn er weer Breidagen, dit keer in Amersfoort. Ik geef er, met een handje hulp van Hanneke Bezem, twee workshops over Het Betere Breiwerk Mini op zaterdag- en zondagmiddag. In 2,5 uur tijd wil ik mijn cursisten een voorproefje geven van de intensieve breicursus van acht lessen van drie uur die ik twee maal per jaar geef. En laten zien dat menig breier, ook de gevorderde breier, baat kan hebben bij deze cursus. We starten met uitleg over wat Het Betere Breiwerk inhoudt en gaan daarna hands-on met een breiopdracht die leidt tot een onooglijk proefje tjokvol leerpuntjes. Leren en je vaardigheden verbeteren, dat is toch waar het om draait!

Voor de workshop op zondag zijn nog enkele plaatsen beschikbaar.

This weekend the Breidagen (Knitting Days) are organised again, this time in Amersfoort. I will give,  with the help of a hand Hanneke Broom, two workshops Advanced Knitting Mini on Saturday and Sunday. In 2.5 hours I want to give my students a taste of the intensive knitting course of eight three-hour classes that I teach twice a year. And show that many knitters, also the more experienced knitter, can benefit from this course. We start with an explanation of what Advanced Knitting is and then go hands-on with a knitting instruction that leads to a ugly sample stuffed with learning points. Learning and improving your skills, that is what it is all about!

For the workshop on Sunday are still some places available.

Wat een heerlijke dag vandaag op de Handwerkbeurs in Zwolle. Ik dacht dat ik maar een paar uurtjes zou gaan, maar het werd de hele dag, want wat is het fijn om er rond te slenteren en ik heb zo veel leuke mensen ontmoet. Veel enthousiaste handelaren zorgden voor kramen met van alles waar het hart van de gepassioneerde handwerker sneller van gaat kloppen. Op hun beurt zorgde veel vrolijke klanten die genoten van de mooie spullen, hun eigen nieuwe creatieve ideeën en de toevallige en geplande ontmoetingen met mede-creatievelingen voor een vrolijke, hartelijke sfeer.

En tja, ik ben toch alleen maar aan het breien voor mijn boek over twijnend breien dat – hopelijk – in het najaar gaat verschijnen, dus garens voor fun-projecten kopen heeft weinig zin op het moment. Maar die prachtige breizak van de familie Grevers (de randjes gehaakt door Connie, de lapjes genaaid door moeder Grevers en de tas verkocht door breivriendin Anke) kon ik echt niet laten liggen. Rood-wit-blauw, helemaal The Dutch Knitters!

Bij Khyber Gallery kocht ik de twee Afgaanse kettinkjes met lapis lazuli. Een superdeal, mijn dag is goed…

Dank je wel Janet, je hebt het wéér voor elkaar, als dit geen record aantal bezoekers oplevert, dan weet ik het niet meer hoor. Succes met de laatste twee dagen morgen en overmorgen!

What a wonderful day today at the Handwerkbeurs (Craft Fair) in Zwolle. I thought I would go a few hours, but it was there all day , because it’s so good to wander around and I met lots of nice people. Many enthusiastic traders had stalls with everything that made the hearts of the passionate craftsman beat faster. In turn, many happy customers who enjoyed the nice stuff, new creative ideas in their heads and random and scheduled meetings with fellow formed a  creatives, cheerful and cordial atmosphere.

And yeah , I ‘m still just knitting for my book on twined knitting that – hopefully – will appear in the autumn so buying yarn for fun projects makes little sense at the time. But that beautiful breizak the Grevers family ( the edges hooked by Connie , the patches sewn by mom Grevers and sold by knitting girlfriend Anke ) I really could not pass up . Red, white and blue , all colour s of The Dutch Knitters !

In Khyber Gallery I bought two chains with Afghan lapis lazuli. A super deal, which made my day…

Thank you Janet , you’ve done it again , if it does not record number of visitors , I do not remember hearing . Good luck with the last two days, tomorrow and Sunday !

Er is weinig dat leuker is dan workshops geven, vooral over een techniek waar mijn hart naar uit gaat. Twijnend breien was het onderwerp van de workshop die ik onder de vlag van mijn bedrijf The Dutch Knitters afgelopen zondag gaf bij de Afstap in Amsterdam. Hanneke, mijn zeer gewaardeerde Afstap-collega, vriendin en getalenteerd brei-ontwerpster, verleende gedurende de dag hand- en spandiensten en hielp de cursisten waar nodig met het zich eigen maken van alle nieuwe technieken.

There is little that is more fun than giving workshops, especially about a technique where my heart goes out to. Twined knitting was the subject of the workshops I gave under the banner of my company, The Dutch Knitters, in last Sunday at the Afstap in Amsterdam. Hanneke, my highly esteemed Afstap colleague, friend and talented knitting designer, lend a hand and helped students where necessary with the mastery of all new technologies during the day.

De cursisten hadden er zin in. Eén van hen was zelfs in een taxi gesprongen toen de tram op zich liet wachten, zodat ze toch nog op tijd was. Dat is de juiste instelling. Enig fanatisme in het je eigen maken van breitechnieken wordt door mij gewaardeerd en gestimuleerd. De cursisten breiden zich moedig door de opdracht heen, zodat ze met een start voor een mobielhoesje tjokvol spannende techniekjes en leerpuntjes naar huis konden gaan. En met een hoofd vol nieuwe kennis en inspiratie voor prachtige twijend brei-projecten.

The group of students was excited to know more about twined knitting. One of them had even jumped in a taxi when the tram was delayed, so she was still on time in itself. That’s the spirit. Any fanaticism in making your own knitted techniques is valued and encouraged by me. The students knitted courageously the asignment, so they could go home with the start of a mobile case stuffed with exciting new techniques and learning points. And with a head full of new knowledge and inspiration for beautiful twijend knitting projects.

Dit jaar zijn er diverse evenementen met als onderwerp textiel in het hoge Noorden op het gebied van breien en textiele ambachten. Allemaal leuk, maar welke te kiezen?

In Viljandi is er van 13 tot 18 juli een week met workshop over Estlandse ambachten. Er zijn ook workshops over breien. Ik was er al twee keer eerder. Beide keren ging ik ook naar Olestvere, een geweldig complex rond een prachtig landhuis, waar je de mooiste ambachten kan leren.

Finland organiseert dit jaar het Nordic Knitting Symposium. Nadat Estland de eerste drie symposia had georganiseerd, zijn zij aan de beurt en ze pakken flink uit met een hele week workshops en activiteiten. Van 29 juni tm 5 juli kan je je hart ophalen.

En in Riga, daar is van 5 tm 7 juni een event geheel gewijd aan wanten. Kan het mooier? De Letse wanten zijn prachtig. Sinds het uitkomen van Latviesu Cimdi ben ik verkocht, ik wil daar beslist meer over weten. Ik wil daar dus best wel heen, reken maar. Het museum in Riga schijnt een enorme collectie wanten te herbergen. Misschien verder ook nog iets van het land zien… Wie wil daar nu niet heen hè…. 😉

This year there are several events in the far north in knitting and textile crafts. All nice, but which one to choose?

Viljandi is from 13 to 18 July, a week filled with workshop on Estonian handicrafts. There are also workshops on knitting. I was there twice before. Both times I went to Olestvere, which is  a great complex around with a beautiful country house, where you can learn all kind of crafts. 

This year Finland is organizing the Nordic Knitting Symposium. After Estonia had organized the first three symposia they take their  turn and organized a week of workshops and activities. From June 29 thru July 5 you can pick up your heart.

And in Riga, there is from 5 until 7 June, an event entirely dedicated to mittens. Can it be better? The Latvian mittens are beautiful. Since the release of Latviesu Cimdi I’m sold, I definitely want to know more about them. So I really want to go there. The museum in Riga seems to have a huge collection of mittens. Maybe see some more of the country. Who does not want to go there,  huh …. 😉

Wie al behoorlijk goed kan breien, maar de fijne kneepjes van het vak wil leren, kan terecht bij The Dutch Knitters voor Het Betere Breiwerk. Een gedegen breicursus van acht lessen waar we de breisteek in al haar gedaantes leren kennen. Na de eerste les kan je wel over links, rechts, om je nek enz breien, maar weet je amper nog wat recht en averecht is. Maar dat is nu net de bedoeling…… In de lessen daarna leer je onder andere perfect minderen, meerderen, van alles over I-cords, opzetten, afkanten, kantbreien, diverse soorten kabels, verkorte naalden en het netjes in elkaar zetten van je breiwerk.

If you can knit real well, but still have desire to learn the tricks of the trade, you can go to The Dutch Knitters for Advanced Knitting (Het Betere Breiwerk). A thorough knitting course of eitght lessons which will teach you the stitch in detail. After the first lessons you can knit continental, German and even with the thread around you neck, but you will hardly be able to distinguish between knit and purl stitches. That is exactly what I want you to do…. In the lessons after the fist lesson you will learn, among other things, decreasing, increasing, all about I-cord, casting on, lace knitting, short rows and sewing your knitting into a garment. 

Het Betere Breiwerk, compleet met verplicht huiswerk en niet verplicht oefenwerk, is niet voor breiwatjes, maar voor gevorderde breiers die hun breivaardigheden van het niveau ‘zelfgemaakt’ naar ‘professioneel handgemaakt’ willen tillen. In januari start bij de Afstap in Amsterdam weer een nieuwe cursus. De cursusprijs van 335 euro is inclusief een materialenpakket met onder meer Rowan-garen en Addi-breinaalden. En Carla zorgt ook nog voor koffie, thee, koek en chocola. Want naast leerzaam moeten de avondjes natuurlijk ook genoeglijk zijn! Na Het Betere Breiwerk gaan de cursisten gewoon door met een spoedcursusje Weigth Wachters…. 😉

Advanced Knitting, with obligatory homework and not obligatory exersizes, is not for knitters faint of heart, but for advanced knitters that want to improve their skills from the level ‘homemade’ to ‘handmade’. In January in the Afstap in Amsterdam there will start a new course. The price for the course is 335 euro including a package with materials (Rowan yarn and Addi knitting needles and other handy stuff). And Carla will serve coffee, tea, cookies and chocolat. The lessons should be educational but also enjoyable! After the course Advanced Knitting straight on to the course of the Weight Watchers… 😉

Op de foto zie je de groep breiers die Het Betere Breiwerk volgden in Driebergen en zich nu offciëel Betere Breiers mogen noemen. Allemaal goeie, leuke, gezellige cursisten, maar vijf cursisten waren extra speciaal, want die kwamen iedere week helemaal uit Groningen, oeps, ik bedoel Zuidlaren in Drenthe, voor Het Betere Breiwerk. Autootje vol, met soep en salades uit het handje, uren rijden om beter te leren breien. Stoer hoor!

On the photo you see the group that recently did the course Advanced Knitting in Driebergen. They may now call themselves Better Knitters. All good, nice and fun students, but five were very special, as the came from Groningen, oops, I mean Zuidlaren in Drenthe, for the course of Advanced Knitting. All in one car, with soup and salades, driving for hours, just to learn to knit nicer. I think that is awesome!

Wat was het leuk, verleden week in Groningen. Hier werden de Haak- en Breidagen gehouden in de mooie Der Aa-kerk midden in het centrum van de prachtige oude stad. Wat een fantastisch sfeertje! Standjes, workshops en spinners bovenop de eeuwenoude grafstenen en dankzij de mooie religieuze achtergrondjes vormde iedere hoekje vormde een mooi plaatje. Ik gaf vier workshops in Zomers, een pand met romantische vergane glorie-uitstraling op een minuutje lopen van de kerk. En ‘s avonds… lekker eten in de gezellige restaurantjes, om vervolgens een toertje te breien met de andere docenten en daarna met een slokje op richting hotel te gaan. Dank je wel Janet Vermist van Second Events voor de organisatie van dit grandioos leuke evenement. Het was tóp! Volgend jaar weer?

It was so much fun, last week in Groningen. The Haak- en Breidagen were held in the beautiful Der Aa church in the center of the nice old city center. It was such good atmosphere! Stands of merchands, workshops and spinners were put on the century old grave stones and thanks to the lovely religious backgrounds every corner formed a nice image. I gave four workshops in Zomers, a romantic old building very near the church. And in the evenings… nice food in cozy little restaurants, then knit some rows with the other workshop teachers and at last, after a glass of wine, to the hotel. Thank you Janet Vermist of Second Events for organising this great event. I loved it! Next year, same time, same place? 

Feest! De Afstap in Amsterdam bestaat dit najaar 40 jaar en dat prachtige jubileum moet worden gevierd, vinden eigenares Lonnie, mijn collega-winkelmeisjes en ik. Dus is het de hele week feest van zondag 29 september tm zondag 6 oktober en op zondag 13 oktober. Stella Ruhe (van het net gepubliceerde boek over visserstruien), MoniqueB  (beroemd vanwege haar kanten shawls), Christel Seyfarth met haar nieuwe boek,  Hanneke Bezem, Loret Karman, Marlies Hoogland en The Dutch Knitters met een inloopworkshop over twijnend breien komen de boel nog eens extra opleuken. Iedere dag is er iets te beleven in de winkel. En dan heb ik het nog niet eens over de kortingen en leuke aanbiedingen!

Let’s party! The Afstap in Amsterdam has its fortiest birthday this fall and of course Lonnie, all my colleagu sales girls and I want to celebrate this with a big event. So a week of party, starting Sunday 29 September till Sunday 6 October en op zondag 13 oktober. Stella Ruhe (auteur of  the recently publiced book about Dutch ganseys), MoniqueB famous for her lace shawls, Christel Seyfarth with her new book, Hanneke Bezem, Loret Karman, Marlies Hoogland and The Dutch Knitters with a walk in workshop about twined knitting come to add their bit to the event. Every day there is something interesting to experience in the shop. And I didn’t even mention the high discounts and nice offers yet!
