Wie de sok past, trekke ‘m aan. Op de jaarlijkse handwerkmarkt bij het Openlucht Museum in Riga, zagen we dames in klederdracht zorgvuldig sokken en kousen passen. Want als je geen katoentjes van 10 voor 5 euro wilt kopen, maar handgemaakte wollen sokken met kantpatronen of ingebreide motiefjes, dan moet het wel perfect zitten.

Wat hebben we veel meegemaakt, gezien en geleerd. De komende weken zal ik jullie van alles laten zien van de mooie Letse breikunsten en onze avonturen. Een reis, die van het eerste tot het laatste moment was gevuld met meest breigerelateerde activiteiten, maar ook supergezellig was met mijn breivriendinnen Mieke en Andrea.

If the sock fits, wear it. At the annual crafts fair at the Open Air Museum in Riga, we saw women in traditional carefully try on socks and stockings. Because if you don’t want to buy cotton from 10 to 5 euros, but handmade woolen socks with lace patterns or knitted patterns, or it has to be perfect.

We have experienced a lot, seen it all and learned so much. In the coming weeks, I will let you see all kind of beautiful Latvian knitwear and tell you about our adventures. A journey, which from the first to the last moment was filled with most knitting-related activities, but also was super with because of the company of my knitting friends Mieke and Andrea.

Heel Nieuwpoort deed mee. De medewerkers van De Schapekop mochten vrijwel alle huizen en bedrijven in het centrum van het historische stadje versieren met brei- en haakwerk. Dassen, shawls, dekens, truien, alles was uit de kast getrokken, om standbeelden geslagen, als rode lopers uitgerold of zelfs – letterlijk, als drijvend object – in het water gegooid.

Ik heb twee middagen in het Arsenaal op het podium doorgebracht, kletsend met bezoekers, ondertussen ze vertellend over twijnend breien, Haapsalu shawls, mijn boeken en Het Betere Breiwerk. Natuurlijk af en toe even signeren en de geïnteresseerden een toertje twijnend laten breien. Velen schreven zich snel in voor mijn workshops op 23 en 30 januari of voor Het Betere Breiwerk in het najaar in de Schapekop.

Twee dagen vliegen om, vooral al het zo gezellig is. Hanneke Bezem, die ook les gaf tijdens het festival, Jan en ik hebben na afloop op het terras in de zon getoost met thee, wijn en appeltaart op het succes van het evenement. En nu maar hopen dat de Schapekop over twee jaar dit fantastische festijn opnieuw gaat organiseren! Carina, medewerkers van de Schapekop, docenten en alle vrijwilligers, bedankt voor jullie harde werken om dit evenement te laten slagen! Top!

All inhabitants of Nieuwpoort participated. The employees of De Schapekop had decorated almost all homes and businesses in the center of the historic town with knitted and crocheted handicrafts. Scarves, shawls, blankets, sweaters, everything was pulled out of the closets, thrown  on statues, rolled out like red carpets or even if – literally, as floating objects – thrown into the water.

I spent two afternoons on the podium in the Arsenal (historical building), chatting with visitors, meanwhile telling them about twined knitting, Haapsalu shawls, my books and my Advanced Knitting Course. Of course every now and then I had to sign books and had those interested in twined knitting knit some rows. Many subscribed quickly for my workshops on 23 and 30 January or even enlisted for the Advanced Knitting Course in autumn in the Schapekop.

These two days fly by, especially if it is so cozy. Hanneke Bezem, also a teacher at the festival, Jan and I said ‘cheers’ with tea, wine and apple pie to celebrate the success of the event. Let’s hope that the Schapekop will again organize this great festival in 2017! Op vrijdag 29 en zaterdag 30 mei organiseert De Schapekop in Nieuwpoort (vlakbij zilverstad Schoonhoven) het Brei- en Haakfestival. Twee dagen lang wordt het mooie historische stadje omgetoverd tot handwerkparadijs. Er zijn workshops te doen, waaronder twee van mijn collega Hannek Bezem, en ik ben er van 13.00 tot 16.00 uur om mijn boek Lekker Warm! te signeren. Natuurlijk neem ik een aantal ontwerpen uit het boek mee en laat ik je zien wat de essentie is van twijnend breien. Je mag het zelf ook even proberen op één van de oefenwerkjes die ik meeneem. On Friday 29 and Saturday 30 May De Schapekop in Newport (near silver city Schoonhoven) organizes the Knitting and Crochet Festival. For two days, the beautiful historic town will be turned into handicraft paradise. There will be workshops, including two of my colleagues Hannek Bezem, and I’m present from 13.00 to 16.00 h. for signing my book So Warm!. Of course I will bring some of the designs from the book, and I’ll show you the essence of twined knitting. You can also try yourself on one of the practice workswhich I take. See you later!

Titia, Elsbeth en ik werden verleden jaar tijdens onze reis naar Riga in Letland, ontvangen door de breiers uit Dobele. Een geweldige, hartelijke ontvangst, met een grote pot heerlijke thee van lokale kruiden en lekkere Letse hapjes én een speciaal voor ons ingerichte tentoonstelling. De vrouwen hadden hun mooiste breiwerken meegenomen en in de zaaltjes van het crafts house tentoongesteld, zodat wij een goed beeld kregen van wat ze kunnen en doen. Prachtig werk, niet alleen traditioneel Lets of Baltisch, maar ook heel modern met patronen van Ravelry. Trots lieten ze alles zien. Ze waren ook erg geïnteresseerd in het twijnend breiwerk dat ik bij me had en in mijn nieuwe boek, dat toen nog in de maak was. Ik kreeg hun boek over de handwerklieden uit Dobele, maar het allermooiste souvenir was toch wel het lieve gele gehaakte eendje, dat één van de vrouwen had gemaakt en mij met een lieve glimlach overhandigde.

Trots waren ze ook op hun samenbreiproject, een enorme slang, waar wij natuurlijk ook even aan mee mochten breien. Dank aan Anita van de plaatselijk toeristeninformatie voor het regelen van deze ontmoeting. Hopelijk zien we de lieve dames uit Dobele in hun mooie crafts house snel weer een keer terug!

Titia, Elsbeth and I were last year during our trip to Riga in Latvia, welcomed by knitters from Dobele. A wonderful, warm welcome, with a big pot of delicious tea from local herbs and Latvian tasty snacks and a specially designed exhibition for us. The women had brought their finest knits and exhibited it all in the roomsof the crafts house, so we got a good idea of ​​their crafts and knittings. Beautiful work, not only traditional Latvian and Baltic, but also very modern with patterns of Ravelry. Proudly they showed us everything. They were also very interested in the twined knitting I brought and my new book, which was still in the making. They gave me their book about the craftsmen from Dobele, but surely the most beautiful souvenir was a sweet crocheted yellow duckling that had been made by one of the women and handed me with a sweet smile.Proud they were also about their knitting project together, a huge snake, and of course, we could add some of our  knitting too to it. Thanks to Anita from the local tourist information for arranging this meeting. Hopefully we’ll meet the lovely ladies from Dobele in their beautiful crafts house soon  again!

Op 14 april legde ik de laatste hand aan de shawl waar ik al in november vorig jaar aan was begonnen. Het was dan ook een hele klus, vooral als je het best wel druk hebt.

Garen: Wensleydale cobweb 2-draads kantgaren van de Sheep Shop in Yorkshire, Engeland (niet meer in productie). Mogelijk levert het dunne Gotland-garen van Lidaholm een vergelijkbaar (iets dikker) resultaat. Of neem Mora van de Afstap.

On April 14, I put the finishing touches to the shawl which I started last year in November. It was a daunting task, especially if you’re pretty busy.

Yarn: Wensleydale cobweb 2-ply lace yarn Sheep Shop in Yorkshire, England (no longer in production). Possibly the thin thread of Gotland Lidaholm provides a similar (slightly thicker) result. Or use the Swedish yarn Mora sold at the Afstap.

Wat ligt daar te blocken op ons bed? Binnenkort de knitty gritty en meer foto’s van de geblockte shawl.

Voor mijn verjaardag kreeg ik van mijn schoonzussies een cadeaubon van Modilaine. En wat hangt daar in de etalage,… een poederroze mohairshawl met het patroontje van de Bruidsshawl, maar dan driehoekig. Gewéldig! En ik hoef ‘m niet eens zelf te breien, ook best wel eens lekker.

For my birthday I got a gift certificate from local yarn shop Modilaine from my sisters in law. Guess what was hanging in their window display… a powder pink mohair shawl with the pattern of the Bridal Shawl, but this one is triangular. Great! And I do not even have to knit it myself, what is quite nice too, now and then.

Inmiddels heb ik een behoorlijke verzameling oude breiboeken opgebouwd. Maar de oudste en bijzonderste zijn nog niet zo lang geleden toegevoegd aan de verzameling. En het zijn ware juweeltjes!

Het haakboekje is gepubliceerd in 1849 en het breiboekje in 1848. Beide zijn voorzien van prachtige platen waarop de projecten zijn afgebeeld. Teer zijn ze zeker, maar beide boekjes zijn compleet en in redelijk goede staat.

Over the years I have built up quite a collection of old knitting books. But the oldest and most particular are not yet so long ago added to the collection. And it are true gems!

The crochet booklet was published in 1849 and the knitting booklet in 1848. Both have beautiful pictures in which the projects are shown. They certainly are fragile, but both books are complete and in reasonable good condition.

Mijn Afstap-collega Hanneke breide een door Kaffe Fassett ontworpen deken van Rowan-garen in haar eigen kleuren en won daarmee een prijs in de door Rowan uitgeschreven wedstrijd. Gefeliciteerd Hanneke!

My colleague at the Afstap Hanneke has knitted the blanket, designed by Kaffe Fassett, but choose her own colours. With this beautiful blanket she won a price in the Rowan competition. Congratulations Hanneke!

De Italiaanse Emma, ruim 115 jaar oud…  zou ze haar omslagdoek zelf hebben gehaakt?

Jan en ik bezochten het ABBA-museum in Stockholm naar aanleiding van de tip van Anke. Ze had helemaal gelijk, zelfs voor wie geen fan is van ABBA is het een superleuk en vrolijk museum. Binnen een uurtje of wat heb je een goed beeld van de hype die ABBA destijds was en hoe ze uit elkaar zijn gegaan.

In de museumshop kocht ik dit haakpakketje. Je kan er een kopie van het iconische songfestivalmutsje van maken dat Agneta droeg toen ze in 1974 over Waterloo zong. Dus, ondanks dat ik een hekel heb aan glitters, maakte ik er dit schattige dopje van. Jan deed uitvoerig onderzoek op internet naar hoe het er precies uit zou moeten gaan zien. In het pakketje ontbraken wat sterretjes, daar moest ik nog even achteraan.

Er was veel authentieke kleding van de vier artiesten in dit museum, gewéldig om te zien. En Jan kon in de originele helikopter van het album Arrival plaatsnemen en karaoke zingen.

Jan and I visited the ABBA museum in Stockholm following the tip from Anke. She was right, even for those who are not a fan of ABBA it is a super fun and cheerful museum. Within an hour or so you’ll have a good idea of the hype that ABBA was then and how they broke up.

In the museum shop I bought it crochet kit. You can make a copy of the iconic song contest hat Agneta wore while singing Waterloo in 1974. So, even though I hate to wear glitter, I made this cute cap from the materials. Jan did extensive research on the Internet to find out how should look like. In the package were missing some sparklers, I had get a few of these to finish it.

There was a lot of authentic clothing of the four artists in this museum, great to see. And Jan could sit in the original helicopter from the album Arrival and sing karaoke.

Bloedrood, zacht en superwarm, zo kan je mijn nieuwe vestje van Rowan Brushed Fleece omschrijven. Wat een zalig materiaal om mee te werken en om te dragen. En zo licht dat mijn hele vestje gebreid is van 7,5 bollen, dus slechts 350 gram. De ontwerpster Kim Hargreaves heeft het patroon Bleak genoemd. Het is te vinden in North, een van haar laatste boeken, waar je nog veel meer prachtige ontwerpen in vindt. Zowel het boek, als het materiaal kan je kopen bij de Afstap in Amsterdam.

Blood red, soft and super warm, so you can describe my new cardigan made from Rowan Brushed Fleece. What a great material to work with and to wear. And so light that my cardigan is knitted with of 7.5 balls , so only 350 grams. The designer Kim Hargreaves has called the pattern Bleak. It is found in North, one of her latest books, in which you will find a lot more beautiful designs. The book and yarns you can buy at the Afstap in Amsterdam. 

Midwinterwol in Winschoten was een gewéldige ervaring. Lekker Warm! kon worden gekozen als welkomstgeschenk voor nieuwe abonnee’s, dus ik had men gezellig aangesloten bij de dames van Handwerken zonder Grenzen. Maar Karen uit Alaska mocht het boek zonder abonnement kopen. Om mij heen allemaal lieve dieren, twee hondjes van de achterbuurtjes en vlak naast ons drie schattige alpacaatjes. En zoveel vrienden uit de breiwereld gezien! Een excursist kwam haar twijnend gebreide wanten en Zeeuwse Ilse kwam haar PoesPas showen.

Midwinterwol Winschoten was a great experience. Lekker Warm! could be selected as a welcome gift for new subscribers, so I had it joined in with the ladies of Handwerken zonder Grenzen. But Karen from Alaska was allowed to buy the book without subscription. Around me all kind of lovely animals, two dogs of the neighborhoods behind and next to our stand three cute alpacas. And there were so many friends from the knitting world! A former student came to show her twined knitted mittens and Ilse from Zeeland came showing her Poespas.

Maar fris was het wel, dus kocht ik bij De Ullstee prachtige polswarmers en een hoofdband van Gotlandbont. ‘s Avonds in mijn appartement fotografeerde ik mezelf in de badkamerspiegel om man Jan mijn aanwinsten te laten zien en zette op zijn aanraden de foto toen ook op Facebook. Wat een leuke reacties! De volgende dag ging ik op de foto met het meisje van de stand van Jamieson and Smith, die ook al zo’n leuke hoofdband om had. Binnenkort kan ik mijn hoofdband ook goed gebruiken, maar daarover later meer…

But it was cold, so I bought some magnificent wrist warmers and a headband Gotland fur from De Ullstee. At night in my apartment I photographed myself in the bathroom mirror to show my husband Jan my gorgeous handband and, on his advice , I also place he photo on Facebook. What a nice comments! The next day I had a photo made with the girl from the stand of Jamieson and Smith, who also had such a nice headband. Soon, I can also use my headband, but more on that later…

Het was lekker warm bij Wolboerderij Blij Bezuiden. Janny had de koffie klaar staan voor ruim twintig gasten die allen waren gekomen voor de boekpresentatie van Lekker Warm! Ze wilden graag meer weten over het boek, de techniek en wat je ermee kan. Ik had alle projecten (meer dan 30!) bij me, zodat iedereen kon kijken en bedenken en alvast kon kiezen waaraan als eerste te beginnen. Na een lekkere lunch vertrok iedereen weer, met Lekker Warm! onder de arm, huiswaarts. Heleen won voor de eerste keer in haar leven een loterij, namelijk de Lekker Warm!-mok. Sommigen tekenden zich meteen in voor de workshop Twijnend Breien voor Beginners bij de Wolboerderij op zaterdag 31 januari.

It was cosy and  so warm in Wolboerderij Blij Bezuiden. Janny had the coffee ready for over twenty guests who had all come for the book launch So Warm! They wanted to know more about the book, the technique and what you can with it. I brought all of the projects (over 30!) with me, so that everyone could check them out and choose which would be the first project to start. After lunch everyone went back home, with So Warm! under their arm. Heleen won the lotery for the first time in her life. The price was a So Warm! mug. Some of them immediately signed up for the workshop Twined Knitting for Beginners at the Wolboerderij on Saturday 31st January.

Ik ging nog even door naar Tikkeltje Zeeuws, de webshop van Atelier Jaffari in Arnemuiden. In het winkeltje aan de markt kan je de kerkklokken van het er tegenover gelegen kerkje horen. Binnenkort komt er een boek over Zeeuwse visserstruien uit. Ik heb me al ingetekend voor de voorverkoop, dan krijg je maar liefst zes euro korting!

I then went to Tikkeltje Zeeuws, the webshop of Atelier Jaffari in Arnemuiden. In the shop at the market you can hear the church bells from the opposing church. (There is a Dutch song about these bells, which made this little church and village famous.) Soon there will be a book published about Zeeland fisherman sweaters. I have already signed up for the presale, you get a six euro discount!
