Titia, Elsbeth en ik werden verleden jaar tijdens onze reis naar Riga in Letland, ontvangen door de breiers uit Dobele. Een geweldige, hartelijke ontvangst, met een grote pot heerlijke thee van lokale kruiden en lekkere Letse hapjes én een speciaal voor ons ingerichte tentoonstelling. De vrouwen hadden hun mooiste breiwerken meegenomen en in de zaaltjes van het crafts house tentoongesteld, zodat wij een goed beeld kregen van wat ze kunnen en doen. Prachtig werk, niet alleen traditioneel Lets of Baltisch, maar ook heel modern met patronen van Ravelry. Trots lieten ze alles zien. Ze waren ook erg geïnteresseerd in het twijnend breiwerk dat ik bij me had en in mijn nieuwe boek, dat toen nog in de maak was. Ik kreeg hun boek over de handwerklieden uit Dobele, maar het allermooiste souvenir was toch wel het lieve gele gehaakte eendje, dat één van de vrouwen had gemaakt en mij met een lieve glimlach overhandigde.
Trots waren ze ook op hun samenbreiproject, een enorme slang, waar wij natuurlijk ook even aan mee mochten breien. Dank aan Anita van de plaatselijk toeristeninformatie voor het regelen van deze ontmoeting. Hopelijk zien we de lieve dames uit Dobele in hun mooie crafts house snel weer een keer terug!

Titia, Elsbeth and I were last year during our trip to Riga in Latvia, welcomed by knitters from Dobele. A wonderful, warm welcome, with a big pot of delicious tea from local herbs and Latvian tasty snacks and a specially designed exhibition for us. The women had brought their finest knits and exhibited it all in the roomsof the crafts house, so we got a good idea of their crafts and knittings. Beautiful work, not only traditional Latvian and Baltic, but also very modern with patterns of Ravelry. Proudly they showed us everything. They were also very interested in the twined knitting I brought and my new book, which was still in the making. They gave me their book about the craftsmen from Dobele, but surely the most beautiful souvenir was a sweet crocheted yellow duckling that had been made by one of the women and handed me with a sweet smile.Proud they were also about their knitting project together, a huge snake, and of course, we could add some of our knitting too to it. Thanks to Anita from the local tourist information for arranging this meeting. Hopefully we’ll meet the lovely ladies from Dobele in their beautiful crafts house soon again!
