In Harrogate kocht ik in november 2013 bij Hobbywool uit Riga enkele doosjes met garen en patronen voor het maken van wanten. Sindsdien kom ik de eigenaren van Hobbywool alsmaar tegen; in Riga in hun winkel en op de grote handwerkmarkt bij het Openlucht Museum in Riga in juni 2014 en zelfs in Keulen op de vakbeurs vorige maand. Ik kreeg meteen weer zin in het breien van Letse wanten en in een reisje naar Riga!
Maar de eerste want werd wat krap, dus dat worden toch maar polswarmers.
In Harrogate I bought in November 2013 at Hobbywool from Riga some boxes of yarn and patterns for making mittens. Since then I have met the owners of Hobbywool several times; in Riga in their store and at the large craft market at the Open Air Museum in Riga in June 2014 and even at the trade fair in Cologne last month. This made me want to knit the Latvian mittens and go to Riga!
But the first one was a bit tight, so tyey better be made into wrist warmers.

Op 14 april legde ik de laatste hand aan de shawl waar ik al in november vorig jaar aan was begonnen. Het was dan ook een hele klus, vooral als je het best wel druk hebt.
Garen: Wensleydale cobweb 2-draads kantgaren van de Sheep Shop in Yorkshire, Engeland (niet meer in productie). Mogelijk levert het dunne Gotland-garen van Lidaholm een vergelijkbaar (iets dikker) resultaat. Of neem Mora van de Afstap.

On April 14, I put the finishing touches to the shawl which I started last year in November. It was a daunting task, especially if you’re pretty busy.
Yarn: Wensleydale cobweb 2-ply lace yarn Sheep Shop in Yorkshire, England (no longer in production). Possibly the thin thread of Gotland Lidaholm provides a similar (slightly thicker) result. Or use the Swedish yarn Mora sold at the Afstap.

De Sanguhar handschoenen, versierd met zwart-witte blokjes met motiefjes, worden nog steeds handgebreid in Schotland. De BBC besteedde pas in een korte documentaire aandacht aan deze breitraditie en de initiatieven om de traditie levend te houden.
The Sanguhar gloves, decorated with squares with black and white motifs, are still handknitted in Scotland. The BBC made a short documentary on the subject recently, which shows this knitting tradition and the iniatives to keep the tradition alive.

Stockholm! Wat een geweldige stad!
Jan en ik waren er dik een week rond de jaarswisseling. Het begon als gewoon lekker een week weg om elders oudejaar te vieren, maar het kreeg uiteindelijk een behoorlijk hoog breigehalte. Met mijn nieuwe maatje Maria Gustafsson bezocht ik de belangrijkste wolwinkels, hemslojden en het Nordiska Museet. Maria is in Zweden met name bekend om haar prachtige breipatronen. Het was voor mij dan ook een hele opluchting dat zij blij was met haar exemplaar van Lekker Warm! dat ze al eerder via het Ullcentrum had aangeschaft. We hebben prachtig traditioneel oud breiwerk gezien in het Nordiska museum en de vele winkeltjes en samen een heerlijk dagje gehad. Vanaf het museumeiland namen we de boot naar Gamla Stan, het oude centrum van de stad, waar we de bruggetjes van de Slussen overliepen naar Södermalm waar zich de door haar opgerichte wolwinkel bevindt: Litet Nystan. En wat een gelukkie, daar werkte toevallig die dag Ivar Asplund, één van de bekendste twijnend breiers van Zweden. Deze winkel is echt het hoogtepunt voor iedere breier die naar Stochkholm gaat, een mekka van zowel traditionele als moderne luxe garens. Ik nam er Z-getwijnd garen mee van Z-garn en wat topkwaliteit maar merkloos dik wit garen zonder merk voor Lovikka-wanten.
Stockholm! Such a great city!
Jan and I were there for more as a week during the holiday season. It started out as just a nice week holidays to celebrate ewhere the changing of the years, but it ended up with a lot of knitting related stuff. With my new buddy Maria Gustafsson I visited the main yarn shops, hemslojden and the Nordiska Museet. Mary is in Sweden especially known for her beautiful knitting patterns. For me it was also a relief that she was happy with her copy of So Warm! that she had previously purchased through the Ullcentrum. We have seen wonderful traditional old knitting in the Nordiska Museet and many shops and together we had such a lovely day. From the Museum Island we took the boat to Gamla Stan, the old town center, where we walked over the bridges of Slussen to Södermalm where yarn shop is located that she founded: Litet Nystan. And we were so happy to find out that Ivar Asplund was working that day, he is one of the most famous twined knitters of Sweden. This shop really is the highlight for every knitter who goes to Stochkholm, a mecca of both traditional and modern luxury yarns. I bought some Z-ply made by Z-garn and some unbranded but beautiful thick white yarn for knitting Lovikka-mittens.

Gelukkig kwamen de breiers van Stockholm ook tussen kerst en de jaarswisseling bij elkaar in café Belmonte. Ik was welkom om mee te breien en heb genoten van de gezelligheid en het zien van ieders werk. De grootste verrassing was dat Kerstin en haar dochter Stine, die ik al tijdens Wool Week op Shetland al ontmoette, ook helemaal vanuit hun woonplaats Uppsala waren gekomen voor het weerzien. Ook de Letse Dace en haar twee studiegenoten Katrina en Karin, die vlak voor onze reis op advies van Karin Kahnlund Lekker Warm! had aangeschaft voor haar en twee studiegenoten, waren er. Het hele balkon van het café gevuld met breiers!
Fortunately, the knitters of Stockholm came also between Christmas and jaarswisseling together in cafe Belmonte. I was welcome to knit with them and enjoyed the atmosphere and seeing everyone’s work. The biggest surprise was that Kerstin and her daughter Stine, who I met already during Wool Week in Shetland, even came all the way from their hometown Uppsala for the reunion. The Latvian Dace and her two classmates Katrina and Karin, who just before our trip on the advice of Karen Kahnlund So Warm! had bought for her and two classmates were there. The entire balcony of the cafe filled with knitters!
En last but not least hadden we twee ongelooflijk toevallige en één geplande afspraak met JC en zijn echtgenoot Mark om Mark te verrassen met mijn signering van Lekker Warm! dat hij van talenwonder JC voor kerst kreeg. Voor de lol leert hij Nederlands, dus we konden lekker met elkaar in in het Nederlands mailen en praten.
Als je elkaar drie keer in dezelfde hemslojden ontmoet, dan moet dat zo zijn. Drie maal is scheepsrecht!
And last but not least, we had two incredibly c0incidental and one scheduled appointment with JC and his husband Mark to surprise Mark with me signing of So Warm! that he got for linguist JC got for Christmas. Learn Dutch for fun, he and I could email and talk Dutch.
If you met each other three times in the same hemslojden, this is meant to be. ‘Drie keer is scheepsrecht’ in Dutch, which means that every special thing should be done three times, which makes it special!

Maar goed, het ging niet alléén maar om breien hoor, we hebben ook heerlijk geshopd, gedwaald, genoten van wijntjes en ons verwonderd over de vroeg ondergaande zon. Ik kocht een geweldige Deense regenjas, Jan een bontmuts en ik ook nog een haakpakketje. Later meer over dit pakketje…
Al met al een heerlijke reis, mede dankzij het zalige hotel waar we een prachtige ruime suite hadden, het steenkoude weer met af en toe sneeuw, de vriendelijkheid van veel Zweden, de prachtige paleizen (Kungliga Slottet op Gamla Stan en Drottningsholm aan de rand van Stockholm) en de sensationele uitverkoop. En de lekkere haring waar Jan van griezelt, maar waar je mij voor wakker mag maken. Oudejaar maakten we mee vanaf de brug van Slussen, waar aan de overkant van het water het vuurwerk zeer georganiseerd en veilig werd afgestoken. Lekker warm en superromantisch, dankzij veel lagen kleding, bontlaarzen, mutsen en wanten én een heupflesje whiskey waar we gezellig om en om een teugje van namen,… tegen de kou. 😉
Anyway, it was not just about knitting enough, we also have delicious geshopd, wandered around the city, enjoyed our glace of wine and marveled at the early setting sun. I bought a great Danish raincoat, Jan a fur hat and I also have a crochet kit. Yes, a crochet kit. Later on more about this kit…
All in all a great trip, thanks to the delightful hotel where we had a lovely large suite, the very cold weather with occasional snow, the kindness of many Swedes, the magnificent palaces (Kungliga Slottet on Gamla Stan and Drottningsholm on the outskirts of Stockholm) and the sensational sale. And the delicious herring which Jan doesn’t like at all, but withI love. New Year’s we spend on the bridge of Slussen, where across the water the fireworks were very organized and safe. Warm and super romantic, with many layers of clothing, fur boots, hats and mittens and a hip-flask of whiskey from whitch we both took a sip now and then… just to prevent getting cold. 😉

Midwinterwol in Winschoten was een gewéldige ervaring. Lekker Warm! kon worden gekozen als welkomstgeschenk voor nieuwe abonnee’s, dus ik had men gezellig aangesloten bij de dames van Handwerken zonder Grenzen. Maar Karen uit Alaska mocht het boek zonder abonnement kopen. Om mij heen allemaal lieve dieren, twee hondjes van de achterbuurtjes en vlak naast ons drie schattige alpacaatjes. En zoveel vrienden uit de breiwereld gezien! Een excursist kwam haar twijnend gebreide wanten en Zeeuwse Ilse kwam haar PoesPas showen.
Midwinterwol Winschoten was a great experience. Lekker Warm! could be selected as a welcome gift for new subscribers, so I had it joined in with the ladies of Handwerken zonder Grenzen. But Karen from Alaska was allowed to buy the book without subscription. Around me all kind of lovely animals, two dogs of the neighborhoods behind and next to our stand three cute alpacas. And there were so many friends from the knitting world! A former student came to show her twined knitted mittens and Ilse from Zeeland came showing her Poespas.
Maar fris was het wel, dus kocht ik bij De Ullstee prachtige polswarmers en een hoofdband van Gotlandbont. ‘s Avonds in mijn appartement fotografeerde ik mezelf in de badkamerspiegel om man Jan mijn aanwinsten te laten zien en zette op zijn aanraden de foto toen ook op Facebook. Wat een leuke reacties! De volgende dag ging ik op de foto met het meisje van de stand van Jamieson and Smith, die ook al zo’n leuke hoofdband om had. Binnenkort kan ik mijn hoofdband ook goed gebruiken, maar daarover later meer…
But it was cold, so I bought some magnificent wrist warmers and a headband Gotland fur from De Ullstee. At night in my apartment I photographed myself in the bathroom mirror to show my husband Jan my gorgeous handband and, on his advice , I also place he photo on Facebook. What a nice comments! The next day I had a photo made with the girl from the stand of Jamieson and Smith, who also had such a nice headband. Soon, I can also use my headband, but more on that later…

Speciaal voor de Sunday Lunch in Weisdale hadden de handwerkers van het Shetland Guild een tentoonstelling ingericht met hun mooiste breiwerken en andere handwerken. Diverse werkstukken waren bekroond met prijzen. Práchtige Fair Isle truien, vesten, mutsen, wanten enzovoorts en delicaat veelal traditioneel gebreid Shetland kant. En ondertussen smulde iedereen van de lunch, sponnen de spinners hun garens en breiden leden van het gilde en de gasten een toertje. Puur genieten! Complimenten voor de leden van het Shetland Guild!
Especially for the Sunday Lunch at Weisdale the crafters of the Shetland Guild had an exhibition with their finest knits and other crafts. Several items were awarded prizes. Gorgeous Fair Isle sweaters, vests, hats, mittens, etc. and delicate traditional knitted Shetland lace. Meanwhile everyone enjoyed lunch, the spinners spun their yarns and guild members and guests a knitted some tours. Pure pleasure! Compliments for the members of the Shetland Guild!

In Shetland is de zondagse lunch echt een dingetje. Men kijkt uit naar al het lekkers dat door de vrouwen met schorten in de keuken van het verenigingsgebouw wordt bereid, maar ook naar elkaar weer zien en even bijpraten. De leden van het breiersgilde hadden hun mooiste breisels tentoongesteld, maar daarover meer in een volgend blog.
Wij hadden ook wel zin in een bordje met zalige zoetigheden en hartige taart, dus wij (Titia, Elsbeth en Corry en ik) waren er ook bij. Op de foto zie je naast mij Ysolda Teague (staat leuk, dat iets donkerder haar!), Gudrun Johnston en Mary Jane Mucklestone. Met Felicity Ford deed ik een swap, mijn boek Lekker Warm! voor haar boek Stranded Colourwork Sourcebook. Natuurlijk kreeg ze er ook Warme Handen bij, want ze is ook gek op Estland.

Shetland is the Sunday lunch a special moment of the week. One looks forward to all the delicacies prepared by the women with aprons in the kitchen of the community building, but also to see each other again and socialize. The members of the knitters guild had exhibited their finest knitwear, but more about that in a future blog.
We’d also want to join in and have some of the delicious sweet and savory pie, so we (Titia, Elsbeth and Corry and I) were there too. On the picture you see beside me Ysolda Teague (nice, that slightly darker hair!), Gudrun Johnston and Mary Jane Mucklestone. With Felicity Ford I did swap, my book So Warm! for her book Stranded Colourwork Sourcebook. Of course she also got Warm Hands, because she is also fond of Estonia.

Dit weekend, zaterdag 13 en zondag 14 december, is het voor de vijfde keer Midwinterwol in Winschoten (Groningen). Dit wol- en breievenement, waar ik al zoveel goeds van heb gehoord, maar tot nog toe steeds maar niet naar toe kon, wordt georganiseerd door twee enthousiaste, door de wol geverfde, noorderlingen, te weten Hans en Gerrie van Low Lands Legacy. Twee dagen wolfeest in het hoge noorden! Je kan mij vinden bij de stand van Handwerken zonder Grenzen, waar ik je kan uitleggen hoe je mijn boek Lekker Warm! kan verkrijgen als welkomstgeschenk bij een abonnement van het tijdschrift. Natuurlijk signeer ik dan graag meteen je boek.
This weekend, Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 December, it is the fifth Midwinterwol Winschoten (Groningen). I heard so many good things about this wool and knitting event, but until now I didn’t get the change to visit the event. It is organized by two enthusiastic, dyed in the wool, northerners, namely Hans and Gerrie Low Lands Legacy. Two days wool party in the far north of the Netherlands! You can find me in the stand of Handwerken zonder Grenzen, where I can explain how you can obtain my book So Warm! as a welcome gift when take a subscription on the magazine. Of course I love to sign your book.

Het was lekker warm bij Wolboerderij Blij Bezuiden. Janny had de koffie klaar staan voor ruim twintig gasten die allen waren gekomen voor de boekpresentatie van Lekker Warm! Ze wilden graag meer weten over het boek, de techniek en wat je ermee kan. Ik had alle projecten (meer dan 30!) bij me, zodat iedereen kon kijken en bedenken en alvast kon kiezen waaraan als eerste te beginnen. Na een lekkere lunch vertrok iedereen weer, met Lekker Warm! onder de arm, huiswaarts. Heleen won voor de eerste keer in haar leven een loterij, namelijk de Lekker Warm!-mok. Sommigen tekenden zich meteen in voor de workshop Twijnend Breien voor Beginners bij de Wolboerderij op zaterdag 31 januari.
It was cosy and so warm in Wolboerderij Blij Bezuiden. Janny had the coffee ready for over twenty guests who had all come for the book launch So Warm! They wanted to know more about the book, the technique and what you can with it. I brought all of the projects (over 30!) with me, so that everyone could check them out and choose which would be the first project to start. After lunch everyone went back home, with So Warm! under their arm. Heleen won the lotery for the first time in her life. The price was a So Warm! mug. Some of them immediately signed up for the workshop Twined Knitting for Beginners at the Wolboerderij on Saturday 31st January.

Ik ging nog even door naar Tikkeltje Zeeuws, de webshop van Atelier Jaffari in Arnemuiden. In het winkeltje aan de markt kan je de kerkklokken van het er tegenover gelegen kerkje horen. Binnenkort komt er een boek over Zeeuwse visserstruien uit. Ik heb me al ingetekend voor de voorverkoop, dan krijg je maar liefst zes euro korting!
I then went to Tikkeltje Zeeuws, the webshop of Atelier Jaffari in Arnemuiden. In the shop at the market you can hear the church bells from the opposing church. (There is a Dutch song about these bells, which made this little church and village famous.) Soon there will be a book published about Zeeland fisherman sweaters. I have already signed up for the presale, you get a six euro discount!

Een paar dagen geleden landde er met een zachte plof een envelop op mijn deurmat. Truus, mijn lieve Afstap-collega, die mij al eerder een door haar oma Aaltje Jaspers gebreid slofje gaf, toen als dank voor het geven van Het Betere Breiwerk, had me een prachtig mitaine, wederom gebreid door haar oma Aaltje, gestuurd. Dit keer wilde ze me hiermee laten weten dat ze blij was met het exemplaar van Lekker Warm! dat ik haar had gegeven. Oma Aaltje heeft de mitaine gebreid in 1890 voor haar opleiding aan de industrieschool in Rotterdam. Er is duidelijk een link met Lekker Warm! want de duimspie van dit mitainetje heeft meerderingen aan één kant, net als de mitaines in Lekker Warm!. Bij het breiseltje zat nog een vreselijk lieve kaart van Truus. Dank je lieve Truus, ik ben verschrikkelijk blij met de mitaines en je lieve woorden!
A few days ago an envelope landed on my doormat with a soft ‘plof’. Truus, my dear Afstap colleague, who gave me a beautiful bootie, knitted by her grandmother Aaltjes Jaspers,as a thank you for giving Het Betere Breiwerk (Advanced Knitting), had sent me a beautiful mitt, also knitted by Aaltje. This time she did this to let me know that she was happy with the copy of So Warm! I had given her. Grandmother Aaltje mittened knitted the mitt in 1890 for her education at the technical school in Rotterdam. There is clearly a link with So Warm! because the thumb gusset this mitainetje has also increases on only one side, like the mitaines in So Warm!. Truus also enclosed a very sweet card. Thank you dear Truus, I’m so happy with the mitt and your sweet words.

Wanneer je tijdens de Shetland Wool Week best een beetje trots met je nieuwe breiboek onder je arm loopt, trek je de aandacht. Het leverde een radio-interview voor de BBC op. Op de site van Interweave stonden Elsbeth en ik samen op de foto tijdens de opening van Wool Week 2014. De fotograaf van The Shetland Times zag daar ook een leuk kleurrijk plaatje in, want hij maakte zonder dat we er erg in hadden een foto voor in de krant. Ook maakte de fotograaf van i’i Shetland graag van de gelegenheid gebruik om mij met boek op de foto te zetten bij Jamieson & Smith. We volgden daar een workshop, gegeven door Mary Henderson. Toevallig droeg ik toen ik werd gefotografeerd voor i’i Shetland voor wat extra warmte de twijnend gebreide polswarmers van Brita, één van de Zweedse medewerkers van het breimuseum. Al eerder had ik contact met haar gehad toen ze Warme Handen bestelde, maar ik wist toen nog niet dat ze prachtig werk maakt, waarvan ze drie items aan mij wilde verkopen. Zij was trots dat ik het kocht en ik dat ik het mocht kopen! Inmiddels heeft ze ook Lekker Warm! in haar bezit. Op haar blog lees je wat ze ervan vindt.
Ook van de workshop van Mary kwam een gezellig fotootje in i’i Shetland. Titia was van ons groepje de meest fanatieke breier, zij maakte ‘s avonds haar polswarmers nog even af en hield ze de rest van de vakantie om. “Lekker Warm!” zei ze…
When you walk a little proudly with your new knitting book under your arm during Shetland Wool Week, you draw attention. It resulted in a radio interview for the BBC. On the site of Interweave Elsbeth and I were together on the picture during the opening of Wool Week 2014. The photographer of The Shetland Times also saw a nice colorful picture in, because before we knew it, he had made a picture of our Dutch group in the newspaper. Also the photographer i’i Shetland grabbed the opportunity to make a photo of me with my book at Jamieson & Smith. We followed a workshop there given by Mary Henderson. Coincidentally I wore my new wrist warmers twined knitted by Brita (Swedish employee of the knitting museum) when I was photographed for i’i Shetland, just for some extra warmth. I had already been in touch with her when she ordered Warm Hands, but I did not know then that she makes beautiful work and that she wanted to sell three items to me. She was proud that I bought it and I that I was allowed to buy it! Now she has So Warm! in its possession. On her blog you can read what her opinion is about So Warm!.
Also, during the workshop of Mary a nice picture was made for publication in i’i Shetland. Titia was of our group the most avid knitter, she finished in the evening her wrist warmers, which she wore for the rest of the holidays. “So Warm!” she said …
