Life 'n Knitting

Deze week liep ik door Hoog Catharijne, het grote winkelcentrum van Utrecht. Ik ken het complex uit de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw van toen ik als kind er voor het eerst kwam. Mijn moeder en ik waren diep onder de indruk van de doorgangen met marmeren vloeren en vonden het allemaal erg chic. Nu oogt alles verouderd, afgetakeld en hier een daar zelfs een beetje louche.

In doorgang boven de Catharijnesingel werd ik aangenaam verrast door een gezellige promotiezuil met een dame in een comfortabele trui en sokken. Vooral de sokken trokken mijn aandacht, want die zagen er wel heel zelfgebreid uit. Mooi gemaakt zelfs, keurig hielflapje en rond neusje. Maar hoe moet ik dat plaatsen, waar is die Hoog Catharijnse winkel die de mooie handgemaakte spulletjes verkoopt die hier worden gepromoot?

This week I walked through Hoog Catharijne, the main shopping centre of Utrecht. I know the complex from the seventies of the last century when I came there as a child for the first time. My mother and I were deeply impressed by the passages with marble floors and found it all very chic. Now everything looks outdated, run down and here and there even a little obscure.

In the passage above Catharijnesingel I was pleasantly surprised by a nice promotion pillar with a lady in a comfortable sweater and socks. Especially the socks caught my attention, because they seemed to be hand knitted. Nicely made, neat heel flap and round nose. But how do I find the store in  Hoog Catharijne that sells such beautiful handmade stuff that is advertised here?

Er is weinig dat leuker is dan workshops geven, vooral over een techniek waar mijn hart naar uit gaat. Twijnend breien was het onderwerp van de workshop die ik onder de vlag van mijn bedrijf The Dutch Knitters afgelopen zondag gaf bij de Afstap in Amsterdam. Hanneke, mijn zeer gewaardeerde Afstap-collega, vriendin en getalenteerd brei-ontwerpster, verleende gedurende de dag hand- en spandiensten en hielp de cursisten waar nodig met het zich eigen maken van alle nieuwe technieken.

There is little that is more fun than giving workshops, especially about a technique where my heart goes out to. Twined knitting was the subject of the workshops I gave under the banner of my company, The Dutch Knitters, in last Sunday at the Afstap in Amsterdam. Hanneke, my highly esteemed Afstap colleague, friend and talented knitting designer, lend a hand and helped students where necessary with the mastery of all new technologies during the day.

De cursisten hadden er zin in. Eén van hen was zelfs in een taxi gesprongen toen de tram op zich liet wachten, zodat ze toch nog op tijd was. Dat is de juiste instelling. Enig fanatisme in het je eigen maken van breitechnieken wordt door mij gewaardeerd en gestimuleerd. De cursisten breiden zich moedig door de opdracht heen, zodat ze met een start voor een mobielhoesje tjokvol spannende techniekjes en leerpuntjes naar huis konden gaan. En met een hoofd vol nieuwe kennis en inspiratie voor prachtige twijend brei-projecten.

The group of students was excited to know more about twined knitting. One of them had even jumped in a taxi when the tram was delayed, so she was still on time in itself. That’s the spirit. Any fanaticism in making your own knitted techniques is valued and encouraged by me. The students knitted courageously the asignment, so they could go home with the start of a mobile case stuffed with exciting new techniques and learning points. And with a head full of new knowledge and inspiration for beautiful twijend knitting projects.

Dit jaar zijn er diverse evenementen met als onderwerp textiel in het hoge Noorden op het gebied van breien en textiele ambachten. Allemaal leuk, maar welke te kiezen?

In Viljandi is er van 13 tot 18 juli een week met workshop over Estlandse ambachten. Er zijn ook workshops over breien. Ik was er al twee keer eerder. Beide keren ging ik ook naar Olestvere, een geweldig complex rond een prachtig landhuis, waar je de mooiste ambachten kan leren.

Finland organiseert dit jaar het Nordic Knitting Symposium. Nadat Estland de eerste drie symposia had georganiseerd, zijn zij aan de beurt en ze pakken flink uit met een hele week workshops en activiteiten. Van 29 juni tm 5 juli kan je je hart ophalen.

En in Riga, daar is van 5 tm 7 juni een event geheel gewijd aan wanten. Kan het mooier? De Letse wanten zijn prachtig. Sinds het uitkomen van Latviesu Cimdi ben ik verkocht, ik wil daar beslist meer over weten. Ik wil daar dus best wel heen, reken maar. Het museum in Riga schijnt een enorme collectie wanten te herbergen. Misschien verder ook nog iets van het land zien… Wie wil daar nu niet heen hè…. 😉

This year there are several events in the far north in knitting and textile crafts. All nice, but which one to choose?

Viljandi is from 13 to 18 July, a week filled with workshop on Estonian handicrafts. There are also workshops on knitting. I was there twice before. Both times I went to Olestvere, which is  a great complex around with a beautiful country house, where you can learn all kind of crafts. 

This year Finland is organizing the Nordic Knitting Symposium. After Estonia had organized the first three symposia they take their  turn and organized a week of workshops and activities. From June 29 thru July 5 you can pick up your heart.

And in Riga, there is from 5 until 7 June, an event entirely dedicated to mittens. Can it be better? The Latvian mittens are beautiful. Since the release of Latviesu Cimdi I’m sold, I definitely want to know more about them. So I really want to go there. The museum in Riga seems to have a huge collection of mittens. Maybe see some more of the country. Who does not want to go there,  huh …. 😉

In Ripley bezochten we na de begraafplaats en het kerkje ook het kasteel. Prachtige kamers en ruimtes waar je je in vorige eeuwen waande. Maar het bijzonderste voor fanatieke breiers bevond zich in de allerlaatste zolderruimte. In één van de vitrines viel het oog van Ingeborg op een krantenartikel over de publicatie van het boekje The Old Hand-knitters of the Dales, geschreven door Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby, telg uit de familie Ingilby, de bewoners van Ripley castle. Het boekje was al in mijn bezit, maar voorafgaand aan de reis had ik er niet eens aan gedacht door alle drukte. Pas op het moment dat ik het artikel zag, realiseerde ik me dat dit boekje bij mij in de boekenkast ligt.

After visiting the cemetery and the church we also visited the castle. Beautiful rooms and halls where you imagined you were in previous centuries. But the most important for avid knitters was in the attic space we checked out at the end of the visit. In one of the showcases Ingeborg’s eye fell on a newspaper article about the publication of the book The Old Hand-knitters of the Dales, written by Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby, member of the Ingilby family and residents of Ripley castle. The book was already in my possession, but prior to the trip I had not even thought about it due to my many activities. Only when I saw the article, I realized that this book is in my bookcase.

Ik hoop op een flinke plensbui. Want dan kan ik lekker op pad met mijn nieuwe vrolijke Regia ‘breiparaplu’!

I hope it will rain cats and dogs. Then I can use my new cheerful Regia ‘knitted umbrella’!

Bij toeval belandden Ingeborg, Titia, Jans en ik in november vorig jaar tijdens onze weekje Yorkshire in het plaatsje Ripley. We maakten eigenlijk een autotocht door de Yorkshire Dales, maar gek als ik ben op begraafplaatsen (zie GraveYart over Parijse begraafplaatsen!) maakte ik een noodstop bij het prachtige oude begraafplaatsje in Ripley en die toevalligheid bracht ons op deze bijzondere plaats. In het kasteel van Ripley vonden we iets heel bijzonders en zeer breigerelateerds, maar daarover later meer…

By chance Ingeborg, Titia, John and I ended up in November last year during our week in the Yorkshire village of Ripley. We actually took a road trip through the Yorkshire Dales, but as I love cemeteries (see GraveYart about Parisian cemeteries!) I made an emergency stop at the beautiful old burial place in Ripley and that coincidence brought us to this special place. In the castle of Ripley we found something very special and very knitting related, but more on that lateron …

In het prachtige zonlicht was de begraafplaats mysterieus mooi. In het kerkje hadden de parochianen een stapel cadeautjes neergelegd voor minder bedeelde kinderen. We vonden in de kerk heel bijzonder breiwerk, namelijk allerlei gebreide poppen die de kinderen hielpen de verschillende personages en hun functie te leren kennen. Roze varkentjes, bruine beertjes en ja hoor, in de tijd dat zwarte Piet de zwarte Piet kreeg van de Zeurpiet,…. een heuse zwarte Sinterklaas!

In the bright sunlight the cemetery was mysteriously beautiful. In the church, the parishioners had filed a pile of presents for underprivileged children. We found in this church very special knitwear, namely all kinds of knitted dolls that the children helped to know the various professions and roles of the people in the church. Pink pigs, brown bears and yes, at the time that there was so much to do in the media in the Netherlands about the fact that traditionally Sinterklaas’ helper Piet is black,…. a real black Sinterklaas!

Beroepsdeformatie, volgens het woordenboek is dat het vertonen van blikvernauwing ten gevolge van het beroep dat men uitoefent, ook buiten de professionele context. Ik heb er ook last van. Flink zelfs, zie bovenstaande tekst die ik bij Marktplaats intypte op zoek naar nieuwe nachtkastjes…

In the Dutch language we have the word ‘beroepsdeformatie’ for the moments you mix up work and private life too much. I have to admit that I do that too. When I was searching for second hand night stands I confused the word achterwand (the part that goes behind the bed) with achterwant (want is mitten in Dutch), see above image…

Kerstavond én oudejaarsavond waren dit keer allebei op een dinsdag. Hmm, balen, want het wekelijkse breiavondje is voor mij een gezellig vast uitje in de week. Lekker ongecompliceerd, je hoeft niets af te spreken of zelfs maar te laten weten of je komt en gezellig is het altijd, of er nu een grote of een kleinere groep breiers komt opdagen. Onze groep is de bijna-oudste van Nederland, opgericht begin 2005 en nog steeds net zo leuk en inspirerend als in het prille begin.

De harde kern van zo’n tien à vijftien leden kent elkaar al goed, maar we vinden het enig als er nieuwe mensen bij komen. Je bent van harte welkom!

Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve this time were both on a Tuesday. Hmm, that sucks, because the weekly knitting night is for me a nice outing each week. Uncomplicated, you do not have to agree or even let us know if you are coming and it’s always nice, if there are a large or a smaller group of knitters show up. Our group is the almost-oldest in the Netherlands, founded early 2005 and still just as fun and inspiring as in the very beginning.

The hard core of about ten to fifteen members know each other well, but we love it when new people join in. You are welcome!
