Wij waren niet de enigen die een breireis maakten naar Letland. Ook 20 Belgische breiers waren in de stad rond het weekend van de grote handwerkmarkt. Rosemie van ‘t Wolwinkeltje in Leuven, Lea van Lana in Antwerpen en een aantal oud-cursisten doken overal op de markt op. Zoveel toevalligheid moet natuurlijk gevierd worden, dus Rosemie en Lea nodigden ons uit ons voor het diner bij het schattige traditioneel Letse restaurant 1221 aan te sluiten. Ze hadden er zelfs bever en bloedworst, maar wij hielden het bij veilige pasta, zalm en iets op een zoutblok. Heerlijk om eens in een andere setting met Rosemie en Lea bij te kletsen. Waar gaan we elkaar volgend jaar treffen voor een gezellig breireisdineetje?

We were not the only ones who went on a knitting trip to Latvia. Also 20 Belgiun knitters were in town around the weekend of the big handicraft market. Rosemie from ‘t Wolwinkeltje in Leuven, Lea from Lana in Antwerp and a number of former students turned up everywhere on the market. So much coincidences should be celebrated, so Rosemie and Leah invited us to join for dinner at the lovely traditional Latvian restaurant 1221. They even served beaver meat and blood sausage, but we sticked to pasta, zalm and something on a salt plate. So nice to chat in a different setting with Rosemie and Lea. Where are we going to meet next year for a cozy knit journey dinner?

Enkele maanden geleden werd ik gebeld door een medewerker van de Omroep Gelderland. Sindsdien staat het onderwerp van dat gesprek in mijn agenda. Gisteren was het namelijk de Dag van de Gelderse Traditie in het Openlucht Museum in Arnhem. Overal op het terrein waren ambachtsmensen en gildelieden bezig met hun ambacht of handwerk. En er werd ook gebreid! Saskia en breimaatje Carla zaten al lekker in het zonnetje te breien bij de ingang. Voor mij was het hoogtepunt de rondleiding over klederdracht uit Gelderland en de Veluwe. Prachtige drachten, deels van de dragers zelf, deels uit het archief van het museum. Ook enkele gebreide items, zoals de kralenpolswarmertjes. Zwart met witte kralen voor normale dracht, zwart met zwarte kralen voor de rouw. Ze lijken erg op de polswarmers die ik in Estland en Letland heb gezien. Ook vroeger was de wereld klein en kon een polswarmertje uit het hoge Noorden de dames in Holland inspireren. Of omgekeerd.

Ook de dames uit Groenlo waren aanwezig. Ik liet ze het hoesje voor mijn OV-kaart zien. Dit ontwerp uit Lekker Warm! is geïnspireerd op de Grolse wanten. Ook waren er vrouwen plantaardig wol aan het verven in de kruidentuin. Het weer zat mee, warm, zonnig, wat in combinatie met de oude huisjes en mensen die graag over hun passie voor ambacht en textiel vertelden, overal een idyllisch sfeertje gaf.

Beetje meegenieten? Dat kan, maandagavond wordt vanaf circa half 7 een impressie getoond op de Omroep Gelderland.

A few months ago I was called by an employee of the Omroep Gelderland. Since then, the topic of that conversation was in my diary. Yesterday it was the Gelderland Tradition Day in the Open Air Museum in Arnhem. Everywhere on the site were craftsmen and guild people engaged in their craft or hand work. And there was also knitting! Saskia and knitting buddy Carla sat knitting already enjoying the sun at the entrance. For me the highlight was the guided tour of the traditional costumes of Gelderland and the Veluwe. Beautiful costumes, some of the wearers themselves, partly from the archives of the museum. Also some knitted items such as beaded wrist warmers. Black with white beads for normal wear, black with black beads for mourning. They are much like the wrist warmers I’ve seen in Estonia and Latvia. Also in earlier days the world was small and a wrist warmer from the north could inspire the ladies in Holland. Or vice versa.

The ladies from Groenlo were also present. I showed them the cover for my travel pass. This design from So Warm!, inspired by the Grolse mittens. There were also women who died wool with vegetable dye in the herb garden. The weather was warm, sunny, which together with the old houses and people who like to tell about their passion for craft and textiles, gave an idyllic atmosphere everywhere.

Wie neemt er nog de moeite een oude trui uit te halen voor de wol? In de Baltische staten is dat heel gebruikelijk en worden de bolletjes uitgehaalde wol in tweedehands winkeltjes verkocht. Maar daar is de economische situatie dan ook een stuk minder rooskleurig dan die van Nederland. Het vergelijken van het minimum loon geeft daar een goed beeld van. Enorme verschillen, maar helaas weerspiegelt dat niet het prijspeil in bv de supermarkt, die maar iets goedkoper is dan bij ons. Dan loont het best wel om oud breiwerk te recyclen. De medewerkers van tweedehands winkeltjes maken er stevige ovale bolletjes van die je voor een prikkie mee kan nemen. Overigens is ook de nieuwe wol niet duur, voor de wollen garens die geschikt zijn om wanten mee te breien betaal je tussen de 1,80 en 2,50 per 100 gram. Maar Adele, de lokale wolwinkel verderop in ‘onze’ straat Gertrudes Iela, verkoopt nog veel meer.

Who still takes the trouble to rip an old sweater for the wool? In the Baltic countries this is very common, and the bolls of ripped yar are sold in second hand shops. But the economic situation is also a lot less flourishing than that of the Netherlands. Comparing the minimum wage makes that clear. Huge differences, but unfortunately that does not reflect the price level, for example in supermarkets, which are slightly cheaper than ours. Then it is worthwhile to recycle old knitwear. The employees of second hand shops  make solid oval balls that you can buy for next to nothing. By the way, also the new wool is not expensive, for the woollen yarns which are suitable to knit the gloves, you pay between 1.80 and 2.50 per 100 gram. But Adele, the local yarn shop in ‘our’ street Gertrudes Iela sells a lot more.

We hebben genoten in Letland. Wat hebben Andrea, Mieke en ik veel meegemaakt, geleerd en wat was het ontzettend gezellig met z’n drieën en de laatste twee dagen in Dobele en Alsunga waar Mieke en ik met z’n tweeën waren.

Vandaag viel er een envelop met een mooi cadeau en een lieve kaart op mijn deurmat, waarmee Mieke verwoordde hoe enorm ze het naar haar zin heeft gehad. Dank je wel lieve Mieke! Je bent een gewéldig reismaatje en ik stap zó weer met je in het vliegtuig voor de volgende breireis hoor. 😉

Als kers op de taart haalde Mieke met haar bijzondere verhaal over deze breireis ook nog de krant (Eindhovens Dagblad).

We enjoyed ourselves so well in Latvia. Andrea, Mieke and I learned and experienced so much, and we had such a good time the three us and the last two days in Dobele and Alsumga Mieke and I, the two of us. 

Today an envelope with a nice gift and a sweet card fell on my doormat, with which Mieke expressed how greatly she enjoyed our time together. Thank you dear Mieke! You’re a great travel companion and I want to jump into a airplane for the next knitting journey with you any time. 😉

As icing on the cake Mieke’s story about her special knitting trip was mentioned in the newspaper (Eindhoven Dagblad).

Breivriendin Carolien keek een beetje verbaasd op toen ze podcast 41 van Sjomajlin bekeek en  bleek dat het uitvoerige verhaal over een of ander breiboek over een Zweedse techniek mijn boek Lekker Warm! bleek te zijn. Start de video op ongeveer 28 minuten om direct bij het fragment uit te komen.

Ja ja, ik ben nog lang niet klaar met jullie vertellen over de avonturen in Letland hoor, blogjes volgen!

In Alsunga maakten we nog veel meer mee dan alleen spontane verkleedpartijtjes. Nadat de vrouwen van Suitu Rija, het plaatselijke textielwinkeltje cq creatief centrum, ons hadden toegezongen om te bedanken voor onze komst en cadeautjes, bedachten ze opeens dat we ook nog konden aanschuiven in de kroeg waar ze traditionele liederen zouden gaan zingen. Dat lieten we ons geen twee keer zeggen, dus óp naar de lokale kroeg! En ja hoor, daar kwamen ze aan, vier traditioneel geklede dames, waarvan één van wel 83 jaar. Met een dijk van een stem, gewéldig! Maar mijn aandacht ging in eerste instantie uit naar de prachtige kousen en kralenpolswarmers.

Alsunga is een katholiek dorpje in een luthers gebied. En dat zie je in het breiwerk. Het katholieke geloof staat meer uitbundigheid in kleur toe, dus de sokken, wanten en handschoenen zijn bedekt met vrolijke bloemen en andere motieven. Geel, oranje, blauw, groen, het kán niet op! Er worden minstens vier kleuren per kous gebruikt.

Maar goed, Mieke en ik gingen dus gezellig met onze vertaler Juris de kroeg in en hebben genoten van het prachtige gezang. Het deed me denken aan de maaltijd die ik een paar jaar geleden had in Setomaa in Estland. Ook toen een groepje vrouwen in traditionele kleding, die met plezier de gasten vermaakten met hun regilaul gezang. Wat heb ik toch ongelooflijk bijzondere dingen meegemaakt!

In Alsunga we experienced a lot more than just spontaneous dressing up. After the women of Suitu Rija, the local textile shop / creative center, we were serenaded to thank us for our visit and presents, they suddenly thought we still could go to the pub where they were going to sing traditional songs. An idea we liked a lot, so off we went to the local pub. And yes, there they arrived, four traditionally clad ladies, one of them 83 years. With a great voice, wonderful! But my attention was primarily focused on the gorgeous stockings and beaded wrist warmers.

Alsunga is a Catholic village in a Lutheran area. You can see that in the knitting. The Catholic faith tolerates more exuberance to colors, so the socks, mittens and gloves are covered with cheerful flowers and other motifs. Yellow, orange, blue, green, such bright colours! At least four colours are used per stocking.

Anyway, so Mieke and I went to the pub with our translator Juris and enjoyed the beautiful singing. It reminded me of the meal I had a few years ago in Setomaa in Estonia. There too was a group of women in traditional dresses, who with pleasure entertained the guests with their regilaul singing. I have experienced so many incredibly special things!

Niet alleen de vrouwen op de handwerkmarkt in Riga wilden iets passen. Toen Mieke en mij de kans werd geboden om in authentiek Letse dracht van Alsunga te worden gestoken, vonden we dat natuurlijk topleuk. Vol enthousiasme hesen onze gastvrouwen ons in een dikke wollen oranje jurk, bonden sjerpen om ons heen, zetten ons vier mutsen boven op elkaar op en sloegen geruite doeken om ons heen. Het geheel werd bij elkaar gehouden door een grote goudkleurige broche met glazen stenen. Precies zoals het hoort, op de schoenen na dan. Best een gek gevoel, het dragen van deze zware dikke kleding, maar beslist lekker warm. Alleen je hoort wel beduidend minder met die vier mutsen op.

Not only the women at the handicraft market in Riga wanted to try on some stuff. When Mieke and I was offered the opportunity to dressed in authentic Latvian clothes of Alsunga, we were thrilles. Enthusiastically our hostesses dressed us up in a thick woolen orange dress, tied sashes around us, put on four caps on top of each other and threw checkered stoles around us. The whole was held together by a large gold-colored brooch with glass stones. Exactly how it should be, except for the shoes of course. Quite a strange feeling, wearing these heavy thick clothes, but definitely warm. Only you can hear significantly less with those four hats.

Wie de sok past, trekke ‘m aan. Op de jaarlijkse handwerkmarkt bij het Openlucht Museum in Riga, zagen we dames in klederdracht zorgvuldig sokken en kousen passen. Want als je geen katoentjes van 10 voor 5 euro wilt kopen, maar handgemaakte wollen sokken met kantpatronen of ingebreide motiefjes, dan moet het wel perfect zitten.

Wat hebben we veel meegemaakt, gezien en geleerd. De komende weken zal ik jullie van alles laten zien van de mooie Letse breikunsten en onze avonturen. Een reis, die van het eerste tot het laatste moment was gevuld met meest breigerelateerde activiteiten, maar ook supergezellig was met mijn breivriendinnen Mieke en Andrea.

If the sock fits, wear it. At the annual crafts fair at the Open Air Museum in Riga, we saw women in traditional carefully try on socks and stockings. Because if you don’t want to buy cotton from 10 to 5 euros, but handmade woolen socks with lace patterns or knitted patterns, or it has to be perfect.

We have experienced a lot, seen it all and learned so much. In the coming weeks, I will let you see all kind of beautiful Latvian knitwear and tell you about our adventures. A journey, which from the first to the last moment was filled with most knitting-related activities, but also was super with because of the company of my knitting friends Mieke and Andrea.

Mieke telde alle nachten af en Andrea kon niet langer wachten, maar morgen is het dan eindelijk zover. Dan vliegen Mieke, Andrea en ik naar Riga om daar een gewéldige week volgepropt met breigerelateerde activiteiten door te brengen. Aanleiding was de handwerkmarkt bij het Openlucht Musuem, waar ik vorig jaar ook al een dag was, maar deze markt is zo groot en er is zo ongelooflijk veel leuks voor textiel- en breiliefhebbers zoals wij, dan ik toen al bedacht dat ik dit jaar er wéér naar toe wilde. En dat is gelukt!

We hebben weer een prachtig appartement in het Art Nouveau-deel van de stad gehuurd en Mieke ik gaan zelfs nog twee dagen de provincie in met een huurauto. Een programma tjokvol hele bijzondere activiteiten. Ja, ja, ik ga heel veel foto’s maken en verslagjes schrijven. Waarschijnlijk lukt het ter plekke al om wat foto’s op Facebook te zetten, zodat jullie kunnen zien waar we de komende acht dagen lang uithangen. En reken maar dat dit een bijzondere reis gaat worden!

Mieke counted down the nights tilparture  and Andrea could not wait any longer, but tomorrow is finally will be there. Then Mieke, Andrea and I will fly to Riga for a great week stuffed with knitting-related activities. The occasion was the handicraft market at the Open Air Musuem, where I was last year for one day, but this market is so big and there’s so incredibly much to see and experience for for textile and knitting enthusiasts like us, I had already decided I that this year I wanted to return. And we succeeded!

We rented a beautiful apartment in the Art Nouveau part of the city and Mieke I go even two days in the province with a rental car. Yes, yes, I’m going to make a lot of photos and I will write reviews. A program stuffed with the most special activities. Probably I will be able to put some pictures on Facebook so you can see where we hang out the next eight days. And you bet that this is going to be a special trip!

Ook in Luxemburg weet men de prachtige Letse cultuur te waarderen. Als je snel bent, kan je nog net naar een tentoonstelling over Letland in Luxemburg. Je kan natuurlijk ook gewoon naar Letland zelf gaan en al dat moois ter plekke gaan bekijken…
