Life 'n Knitting

Inmiddels is de temperatuur bijna lente-achtig, maar toen we verleden week in mijn geliefde Parijs waren, was het stervenskoud. Maar als je je wolletjes aandoet, dan is dat geen enkel probleem. Zes dagen vrijwel doorlopend stralend blauwe hemels. Ik zag Parijs alsof ik een bourka droeg, tussen de rand van mijn muts en hoog opgetrokken shawl. Veel activiteiten binnen is dan wel lekker, dus we zagen de opera Rigoletto en Manon in de Opéra Bastille en het ballet Orpheus und Euridice in de Opéra Garnier. Lekker veel shoppen. En een prachtige fototenfototentoonstelling van het werk van Doisneau, wat een goed beeld gaf van het oude Parijs en Les Halles, waar je tegenover de Eustache de beroemde wolwinkel La Droguerie vindt. Een paar maanden geleden stuurde mijn vaste handelaar mij nog een ansicht van de oude voorgevel van de winkel. Tijden veranderen, maar gelukkig bestaat dit winkeltje nog steeds. Helaas sloot het Art Nouveau warenhuis Samaritaine de deuren, maar het gebouw wordt wel gerenoveerd. Brentanos, de boekenwinkel aan de L’Avenue de l’Opéra waar je vóór de doorstart na het faillissement breiboeken kon kopen en kon meebreien met Stich ‘n Bitch, is uit de as herrezen, maar doet helaas niets meer met breien. Gelukkig verkoopt Jukundo nog volop Japanse breiboeken. Ik vond er twee juweeltjes, één over wanten en één over polswarmers. Komt dat even mooi uit.

By now we have almost spring like weather in the Netherlands, but when we were in my beloved Paris last week, it was bitter cold. Just put on all your woollies, and that is no problem at all.  Six days all blue skies. I saw Paris like through a bourka, formed by the rim of my hat and my scarf up to my nose. So we did many activities inside, like seeing the opera Rigoletto and Manon in the Opéra Bastille and the ballet Orpheus und Euridice in the Opéra Garnier. Shopped till we dropped. And saw a great photo exhibition of the works of Doisneau, which gave an overview of historic Paris and Les Halles, where you can find the famous wool shop La Droguerie in front of the Saint Eustache. A view months ago my supplier of old postcards has send me a postcard of the old front of the shop. Times change, but fortunately this shop is still there. I regret that the Art Nouveau magasin Samaritaine closed its doors, but the building is renovated right now. Brentanos, the book shop on the L’Avenue de L’Opéra, where you could buy knitting books and where knitters were welcome to Stitch ‘n Bitch, has made a new start, but don’t sell knitting books anymore. Fortunately Jukundo has a lot of Japanese knitting books. I found to real gems, one about mittens and one about wrist warmers. I’m so happy with them!

Het leven op straat gaat tijdens de koude periode gewoon door. De markthandelaren trotseerden de kou, zodat de brocantes en vele markten gewoon door gaan. Maar de piepacryl op de markt bij de Bastille kon mij niet bekoren. De mooie kramen en dik ingepakte en altijd vrolijke marktlieden wel. Zelfs de groenten werden toegedekt met oude dekens. De étalages vol Valentijnsharten waren betoverend mooi. Prachtige plaatjes, het gewone dagelijks leven in Parijs is snoepgoed voor wie er oog voor heeft.

Streetlife goes on like always during the cold days. The merchants on the open air markets are there, no matter how cold it gets, so the brocantes and many markets are there for the customers. But the squeaking acrylics the sold on the market near the Bastille were awful. I made a lot of photos of the beautiful stands and warmly dressed merchants. Even the vegetables were covered with old woollen blankets. The display windows fulled with Valentine hearts were a pleasure to look at. Beautiful images, the normal daily life in Paris is eye candy for those who are willing to see it.  

De aanleiding voor het reisje Parijs was trouwens de uitnodiging om L’Aiguille en Fête te bezoeken. Het was leuker dan ooit, maar daarover later meer…

The reasons we went to Paris was the invitaion to visit L’Aiguille en Fête. This fair was better as ever, but I will tell about that lateron…

Brent, wie kent ‘m niet…, breit graag sokken. Hij kan dat heel snel, zie hier van het bewijs, één sok in vijf uur tijd!

Ondanks dat ik mijn eerste bal nog moet breien en het best eens zou kunnen dat het er nooit van komt, ging ik vandaag naar de presentatie van Carlos en Arne bij Selexyz-Broese in Utrecht. Een thuiswedstrijd voor mij. De twee Noren, beroemd vanwege het doorslaande succes van hun Kerstballenboek, vertelden aan de hand van een slideshow over hun werk, inspiratie en hoe ze aan de bal zijn geraakt.

Despite the fact that I still have to knit my first ball and maybe I will never do so, I went today to the presentation of Carlos en Arne at Selexyz-Broese in Utrecht. That is the town I live in. The two Norwegian guys, famous for their big success of their Christmas balls book, showed us slides and told about their work, inspiration and how they fell in love with balls.

Carlos en Arne zijn tijdens de presentatie voortdurend met elkaar in de weer, vullen elkaar aan met in mijn ogen nutteloze details die blijkbaar wel betekenis voor hen hebben en grissen elkaar geregeld de microfoon uit handen. Het kost Carlos bijna een blauw oog. Zo graag willen ze het verhaal kwijt over hun ballen en het ontwerpproces dat ten grondslag ligt aan de creatie van ballen, poppen en eieren.

Carlos and Arne communicate with each other all the time during the presentation, the add extra seamingly unrelevant details that must have som meaning to them and grab the microphone from the hands of the other. Carlos almost got hit in his eye. They are so eager to tell us about their balls and the design process that lead to the creation of the balls, dolls and eggs.

Ballen breien. Het klinkt allemaal een tikje dubbelzinnig, maar zo praten ze er zelf ook over. En dan hadden ze maar niet ‘Balls to Knit’ op de omslag van hun Engelstalige boek moeten zetten. De tour die ze dit najaar in de US zullen doen, heet nota bene ‘Balls and Dolls’. Het heeft allemaal nèt de goeie balans tussen truttigheid en pit. Precies kempie genoeg voor mij om het concept helemaal geweldig te vinden. Ze signeerden mijn ballenboek en ik bood ze Warme Handen aan, gesigneerd met de tekst “After all these balls, why not knit some mittens?”. Ons Groot Geluk is gebaseerd op hetzelfde motief (Vlindertje) als dat van kerstbal 13. Dit vlindertje fladdert blijkbaar niet alleen in Estland rond, maar ook in Noorwegen.

Knitting balls. It sounds a bit ambigious, but that is way they talk about it them selves. Well, they did choose the title ‘Balls to Knit’ for the cover of the English version of the book. The tour that they will make this autumn in the US, is called ‘Balls and Dolls’, what more can I say? Actually it has the just right balance between frumpishness and a little spice. I really love the whole concept. They signed my balls book and I offered them Warme Handen, signed with the text  “After all these balls, why not knit some mittens?”. Our Groot Geluk is based on the same motif (butterfly) as their ball 13. This butterfly must have flapped about Estonia, but also Norway.
