Not your grandmother’s way to knit…….

‘Wij leren je breien niet zoals je oma’, dat is wat er in de folder van Parnassos stond als beschrijving van onze breicursus voor studenten. En dat bleek ook wel. Want ondanks dat het merendeel om absolute beginners ging, lieten we ze alle hoeken van de kamer zien als het om breien gaat. Vanaf de tweede les breiden ze I-cords, kabels, gespiegelde minderingen en meerderingen, rondbreien op rondbreinaalden én rechte naalden, lieten we ze qiviut knuffelen enz. Want wie zonder voorkennis naar een techniek kijkt, zit niet vast aan allerlei ideeën over hoe het moet en kan los gaan met experimenteren en tot geweldige dingen komen.
We will teach you to knit, but not the way your granny would do, that’s what was mentioned in the description of our knitting course in the Parnassos brochure. And that appeared to be true. Despite the fact that the greater part of the group consisted of absolute beginners, we beat them up with all kinds of knitting. From the second lesson onwards we taught them how to do I-cords, cables, mirrored decreases and increases, knitting on circular needles and straight needles, let them cuddle qiviut, etc. Because anyone who can consider a technique without foreknowledge, is not stuck with all kinds of ideas about how it should be done and can go wild experimenting and achieve marvellous things.
Er rolden al snel shawls, omslagdoeken, sokken en pantoffels van de pennen. Maar we hadden niet verwacht dat de ouderwetse pantoffel uit een oud Frans breiboekje zo’n hit zou worden….. En dat naaien en breien verschillende manieren van afhechten vereisen, dan was iets wat één van de studentes niet bedacht had. Ze knipte beide af te werken draadjes gewoon op het randje van het breiwerk met een ferme knip af.
Soon scarves, shawls, socks and slippers rolled of the needles. But we didn’t expect that such an old-fashioned slipper from an old French knitting magazine would become such a hit…… And the fact that sewing and knitting demand different finishing techniques, that was something one of our students hadn’t realised. She just cut the loose ends at the very edge of the work with a firm snip.
Dat niet iedereen even snel was, even losjes kon breien en bereid was de breinaalden even af te staan aan een ander, bleek tijdens het rondbreiwerk voor tien breiers. Samen zetten ze uiteindelijk toch een gigantisch breiwerk op, wat zoals op brei- als op sociaal gebied een geslaagd experiment genoemd kan worden.
The fact that not everyone had the same speed, could knit with the same tension and was prepared to give their needles to the person next to them, appeared during the circular knitting for ten knitters. Nevertheless they managed to cast on a gigantic piece of knitting, something that can be considered a successful experiment, in the social sense as well as in the field of knitting.
Voor ons was het ook een zeer geslaagd experiment om eens aan beginners in plaats van aan (ver)gevorderde breiers les te geven. Want dat bleek best lastig. Wij hadden bijvoorbeeld niet bedacht dat een beginnend breier niet weet welke kant ze op moet breien en hoe ze de draad op spanning houdt. Dus uiteindelijk kwamen wij met de allermeeste leerpuntjes (breipuntjes?) uit de strijd. En hierbij wensen we de twintig ijverige breistudentes nogmaals veel succes en breiplezier!
For us too it was a very successful experiment to teach beginners instead of (very) advanced knitters. Because it turned out to be more difficult than we thought. For instance, we had not thought of the fact that a beginner does not know in which direction to knit and how to keep the yarn at the right tension. So in the end we got the most out of the learning (knitting) process. Again we wish the twenty diligent knitting students lots of success and happy knitting!
