Life 'n Knitting

“Ga maar iets kreatiefs doen, daar heb je later nog wat aan als je getrouwd bent’, zei mijn moeder me toen ik een vervolgopleiding moest kiezen begin jaren tachtig. Als vrouw van haar generatie was dat haar waarheid. En ze had nog gelijk ook. Ik heb er nu dagelijks nog wat aan mijn opleiding tot docent Textiele Werkvormen én ik ben getrouwd.

In die tijd kocht ik mijn eerste spinnenwiel, een prachtige berkenhouten Moswolt. Met het wiel met hamertjes en de grappige houten bolletjes vond ik ‘m veel mooier dan de bekendere Louetjes. In de etalage van een van de vele kreatieve winkeltjes aan de Springweg in Utrecht stond ‘ie mooi te zijn. Jaren later, toen bleek dat ik mijn geld niet kon verdienen als docent TW en een snelle carrièreswitch maakte als docent ICT, verkocht ik ‘m met pijn in mijn hart op de vrijmarkt voor 100 gulden. Maar verleden week zag ik ‘m terug op Marktplaats en was hij weer de mijne voor slechts 45 euro!

Deze Moswolt is in prima conditie en gelijk aan de mijne van vroeger op de grotere spoel en klossen na. Hier kunnen met een beetje proppen wel twee Louet-klossen op, dus het wiel is ideaal voor twijnen. De avond dat de post ‘m afleverde, werd de eerste bol garen (grijze Gotland) erop getwijnd. De Moswolt staat nu in de woonkamer dicht bij de hand en ook om mooi te zijn, en man Jan die mijn sentiment voor dit soort spullen snapt, vindt het maar goed……. 

Zo’n aankoop stimuleert bij mij het spinnen ook weer. De 150 gram zijde met merino van Blij Bezuiden veranderden van zachte pluis in vier prachtige bolletjes. De vogels in de tuin jatte de restjes uit de struik om hun nestje superdeluxe te bekleden. Zijde met fijne merino, niet gek voor een simpele mus.

“Go and do something creative, it will be useful when you get married in the future.”, my mother told me when I had to choose a continuation schooling at the start of the eighties. As a woman of her generation this was her truth. And she was right. Now I benefit of the education to become a teacher for textile crafts on a daily basis ánd I’m married.

In these years I bought my first spinning wheel, a wooden (birk) Moswolt. The wheel with hammers and the funny wooden balls was so much prettier that the Louet wheel that was more well known. In the display window of one of the shops on the Springweg in Utrecht that sold creative stuff it looked so beautiful. Years later, when it was obvious that I couldn’t make a living out of teaching crafts and made a swift carreer as a teacher in ICT, I had to sell my wheel for only 100 guilders. But last week I found it again on Marktplaats and he became mine again for only 45 euro! (about the same amount of money)

This Moswolt is in excellent condition and almost a copy of my old one, except for the bigger spool and bobbins. You can stuff the wool of two Louet bobbins on one of them, so it is ideal for twining. The evening the postman delivered the wheel, my first ball of yarn (grey Gotland) was twined on it. The Moswolt is in our living as a functional and also as a decorative object, and husband Jan who understand my sentiments for these kind of things, doesn’t complain…….

When you buy such a nice wheel it stimulates spinning. The 150 grams of silk with merino bought from Blij Bezuiden changed from soft fluffiness into four lovely balls. The birds in the garden stole the scaps from the bushes to line their nests and make it a super chique bird nursery. Silk with fine merino, not a bad choice for a simple sparrow.
