“Problemen met de was!”, is de gevleugelde uitspraak van mijn schoonzus voor alle futiliteiten des levens. Toch kunnen problemen met de was behoorlijke impact hebben op ons leven. Tijdens de workshop Het Naadje van de Kous in De Afstap afgelopen zondag bespraken we dit onderwerp aan de hand van de waskunsten van man Jan, die sinds hij zelf zijn delicate wollen truien in de machine gooit in te kleine kleding loopt.
Wie de sok past, trekke ‘m aan. Maar je eerste zelfgebreide sokken worden vrijwel altijd bedsokken, tenzij je ze heel heet wast. Niet echt erg, want het volgende paar is meestal wel draagbaar. De cursisten werden door ons van te voren gewaarschuwd dat ze een beetje door moesten werken, maar de meesten zijn dat al gewend want zij hadden al eerder in ons klasje gezeten. Na de geheimen van een dubbele Magic Loop en Kitchener Stitch te hebben doorgrond, zetten ze met de opzet ‘Achtjes met Twee Draden’ de teen van de proefsok op. De verkorte sokken die vervolgens vlijtig afgebreid werden, verdienden niet de schoonheidsprijs, maar iedereen kreeg ‘m voor vijf uur af en dat vinden wij al heel wat. Laat het maar even weten als je zeer moeilijke voeten hebt, want dat passen ze je misschien wel. Doorspekt met leerpuntjes, moe en voldaan vertrokken de dames huiswaarts toen om klokslag vijf uur de bel ging. Winkelmeisje Jans, Hil en ik sloten de dag gezellig af met een zálige pasta bij Foodism.
Gisteren waren we daar weer om de plannen voor het volgende seizoen door te spreken met Afstap-eigenares Lonnie en Jans. Twee dames die inmiddels een wel beetje aan ons gewend zijn en al onze ideeën voor workshops, leuke festiviteiten en aanvullingen op het assortiment in de winkel serieus nemen. Ook als ze een beetje gewaagd zijn. Kijk maar eens naar hun prachtige collectie boeken waar zelfs ik jaloers op ben. En dat wil wat zeggen. Vogue Knitting en Interweave Knits kan je er trouwens sinds kort ook aanschaffen. Al met al belooft dit veel goeds voor het volgende seizoen, maar daarover later meer.
Natuurlijk breiden we nog even mee met Stitch ‘n Bitch Amsterdam in De Jaren. Nancy Marchant liet ons een paar prachtige proefjes in Brioche Stitch (Patentsteek) zien en Andy showde trots zijn twee mutsen in de Zweedse techniek Twijnend Breien die hij heeft geleerd tijdens onze workshop van enkele weken geleden. Die jongen heeft talent. Uiteindelijk waren Hil en ik de enige breiende kroegtijgers die nog over waren. Het zal wel nooit anders worden.
“Problems with the laundry!” are the famous words my sister-in-law uses for all futilities in life. Yet, problems with the laundry can have quite an impact on our lives. During the workshop Het Naadje van de Kous in De Afstap last Sunday we discussed this subject in view of my husband’s laundry skills. He wears delicate woollen sweaters a few sizes too small since he washes them himself in the washing machine.
He who fits the sock, wears it. But your first hand-knitted socks almost always turn out to be bed socks, unless you wash them on a very high temperature. It’s not really a problem because the next pair is usually very wearable. The students were warned in advance that they had to knit on, but most of them are already used to this because they have been in our classroom before. After having fathomed the secrets of a double Magic Loop and the Kitchener Stitch, they cast on the toe of a sample sock with the ‘Figure Eight Cast-on with Two Strands’. The shortened socks that were knitted diligently weren’t the most beautiful socks we’ve ever seen but everyone finished them in time and that’s quite something we think. Just let us know if you have problem feet, because then they might just fit you. Provided with new knowledge, tired but contented the ladies went home when the bell rang at five o’clock sharp. Shop girl Jans, Hil and me decided to end the day with a delicious pasta at Foodism.
Yesterday we went there again to discuss the plans for the coming knitting season with shop owner Lonnie and shop girl Jans. Two ladies who have in the meantime got used to us and take all our ideas for workshops, festive activities and increases in the line of products very seriously. Even if the ideas are a bit daring. Just see their fabulous collection of books, a collection even I am jealous of. And that’s quite something. Recently you can even buy Vogue Knitting and Interweave Knits in their shop. All in all this promises a lot for the coming season, but more about that later on.
Of course we also joined Stitch ‘n Bitch Amsterdam for a few rows of knitting in De Jaren. Nancy Marchant showed us a few beautiful samples in Brioche Stitch and Andy proudly showed us his two hats in the Swedish technique Twined Knitting which he learned at our workshop a few weeks ago. That boy has talent. Eventually ten Hil and me were the only knitting pub-crawlers left. Some things will never change.
