A Dutch Knitter in New York – the wool shops

Met 19 kilo heen en met 32 kilo terug. Waarom wil een breier waarvan het huis al uitpuilt van spullen, breiboeken en stash naar New York om daar zegge en schrijve 13 kilo aan toe te voegen? Maar levensgeluk zit ‘m soms in een klein bolletje, dus als je daar happy van wordt, nou, dan gaat dat bolletje gewoon lekker met je mee naar huis.
With 19 kilos I went to New York and with 32 kilos I returned home. Why does a knitter whose house is stuffed with goods, knitting books and stash want to add another 13 kilos? But happiness sometimes is disguised as a little ball of wool, so if that does the trick to make you happy, never hesitate to take it home.
Wat voor zoveel zaken geldt, geldt ook hier. In Amerika hebben ze altijd van alles meer en in grotere porties. Ook van wol. Veel luxe en bijzondere garens. Maar ook veel bekende bolletjes van bv Rowan en Colinette. Veel echt vernieuwende breisels kwam ik niet tegen, behalve bij Habu. De workshops die in sommige breiwinkels gegeven worden, behandelen meest beginnerstechnieken en voor de hand liggende onderwerpen. Eigenlijk doen we het op breigebied in Nederland nog lang zo gek nog niet!
What’s true for lots of things, is also true here. In America they always have more of everything and bigger portions. This goes for wool too. Lots of luxurious and special yarn. Also a lot of familiar Rowan and Colinette. I didn’t see a lot of very innovative knitting, expect for Habu. The workshops that are given in some shops focus on beginners or discuss the normal topics. I think that on the subject of knitting the Dutch knitters are doing a good job.

Schoolproducts, de oudste wolwinkel van New York, is een zalig ouderwetse en enigszins rommelige winkel verstopt op de tweede etage van een hoog gebouw. De eigenares Berta Karapetyan is de oprichtster van Karabella Yarns. Er is duidelijk een inkoopbeleid met oog voor kwaliteit in combinatie met een redelijke prijs, dus veel cashmere op coons, strengen zijde in diverse kwaliteiten (ik kocht een pond dunne glanzende zijde voor 30 dollar!) en wat duistere maar wel mooie bolletjes gemengd. Ook Koigu sokkenwol in veel tinten, waar ik wat van meenam. Meer voor de heb en omdat je Koigu hier niet ziet, want in deze kwaliteit in handgeverfd garen vind je hier ook bij Colinette en zo. Zimmermann’s Knitting Around bleek een prachtboek te zijn……
Schoolproducts, the oldest yarn shop in New York, is a nice old fashioned and a bit messy shop hidden on the second floor of a apartment building. The owner Berta Karapetyan is the founder of Karabella Yarns. There is obviously eye for quality in combination with reasonable prices, so lots of cashmere on coons, skeins of silk in several qualities (I bought 500 grams of shiny thin silk for 30 dollar!) and some mysterious but lovely balls of blended content. Also Koigu sock yarn in lots of shades, of which I took some home. More just to have it as you don’t see it often here in the Netherlands, but this quality of hand dyed yarn you can also find from Colinette and more brands. Zimmermann’s Knitting Around proofed to be a wonderful book……

Bij String vond ik prachtige luxe garens. Wel aan de prijs, maar mooi geëtaleerd in hun nieuwe winkel in de deftige buurt Upper East vol met Mr Sheffield-huizen. Terwijl Jan op het trappetje buiten zat, leefde ik me uit tussen de ongeprijsde bolletjes. Dat doen ze expres, want de prijzen veranderden te vaak, vertelden ze. Maar ik denk dat het was om de klanten niet te laten schrikken. Vaak lagen de prijzen ook nét iets boven wat ik elders had gezien. Ik heb het allemaal in mijn handen gehad. Eindelijk knuffelde ik echte Qiviut en Koigu. Maar ik ging hier met lege handen weg.
At String I found beautiful luxury yarns. Pricy, but nicely laid out in there new shop in a fancy neighbourhood in Upper East, stuffed with Mr Sheffield houses. While Jan waiting on the stairs in front of the shop, I had a good time between balls without prices on them. They did this on purpose, they told me. But I think it is to prevent that the customers get frightened. Often the prices were just a bit above prices I saw elsewhere. I cuddled all balls I liked. Even Qiviut and Koigu. But left without buying anything.

Heerlijk om bij Habu te zijn. Een grote ruimte om klanten te ontvangen, een miniscuul winkeltje annex opslagruimte en een werkruimte waar diverse Japanse vrouwen kwetterend hun werk deden. Leuk om de eigenares terug te zien. Nadat we elkaar twee keer op L’Aiguille en Fête in Paris hadden ontmoet, vond ze het zo bijzonder mij opeens te zien, dat ik een dikke zoen van haar kreeg! Ik nam er twee klossen sterk, dus goed te blocken, zwart garen mee mét korting. Want breien met zwart was ik al van plan, ik ben opeens weer gek op zwart.
Wonderful to visit Habu. A big space to receive customers, a very small shop with the storage space in all and a working space where several Japanese women worked and chatted. Nice to see the owner of the shop. After meeting her on L’Aiguille en Fête in Paris, she was so surprised that I got a big hug! I took two coons with black wool that is strong enough to block with discount. As I planned to knit something black for some time.

Tegenover de Morgan Library, een museum waar je prachtige illustraties kan bewonderen, ontwaarde ik spontaan The Yarn Connection. Gezellig wolwinkeltje met een vriendelijke eigenares die erg geïnteresseerd was in het breien in Nederland. Ze had mooie handgeverfde sokkenwol liggen. Ik zocht al wat uit, maar legde het snel weer terug toen ik in het mandje tegenover de kassa prachtige strengen bijzondere garens ontdekte. De diepzwarte 100% cashmere in een superkwaliteit voor een spotprijsje ging mee.
In front of Morgan Library, a museum where you can find the most beautiful illustrations, I suddenly discovered The Yarn Connection. A cosy yarn shop with a friendly owner that was very interested in knitting in the Netherlands. She had some very nice hand dyed sock wool, of which I laid some aside to buy. But when I found the basket with really gorgeous skeins near the counter, I quickly placed them back in on the shelves. The deep black 100% cashmere in a superb quality was a real bargain.

Knitting 321 is gehuisvest in het souterain van een deftig herenhuis. Valerie Kardos, de eigenares, een ex-ontwerpster, zou de week erna ze naar Amsterdam reizen, dus ze zag mijn komst als een geschenk uit de hemel. Nu weet ze tenminste dat ze naar De Afstap moet. Ze vertelde ook dat ze meegewerkt had aan een artikel in Handwerken zonder Grenzen en viel van haar stoel van verbazing toen ik vertelde dat ik voor dit blad schrijf. Ze showde uitgebreid haar ontwerpen. De muts met brede oprolbare rand ga ik zeker ook eens proberen.
Knitting 321 can be found in the basement of a pompous building. Valerie Kardos, the owner, a former designer, was to be going to Amsterdam the next week, so she very surprised to have a Dutch knitter in her shop that day. Now at least she know that she has to go to De Afstap. She told me she had recently gave information for Handwerken zonder Grenzen and fell of her chair with surprise when I told her that I write for that magazine. She showed me her designs. The hat with the broad border I will certainly try knitting myself.

Purl SoHo wordt geleid door Joelle Hoverson die echter meer geïnteresseerd is in haar eigen breiwerkje dan in de klanten in de winkel. Jammer hoor, want er lagen wel veel mooie natuurlijke garens in prachtige kleuren. En ze breien er nog proeflapjes zodat klanten de kwaliteit van het gebreide weefsel kunnen zien en voelen.
Purl SoHo is lead by Joelle Hoverson, who seemed to be mostly occupied with her own knitting that with the customers in her shop. Such a shame, as there was a lot of nice natural stuff in gorgeous colours. And there was a big pile of swatches so you can feel the quality of the knitted fabric and see how it knits up.

The Point is gewéldig. Eet, brei en wees gelukkig! Een wolwinkel/breicafé pur sang. Gezellig vol met babbelende breiers. Er is een bar waar je van alles kunt bestellen, ook heerlijke koeken en taartjes. Jan voelde zich er wat verloren aan zijn tafeltje met een zwijgende breister, maar ik vermaakte me er kostelijk. Ik vond er geinige doorzichtige breitassen met het logo van The Point en een streng van 1200 yard alpaca in rozenrood. En twee HiyaHiya sokken rondbreinaaldjes van bamboo in 23 cm. Waarom hebben we die hier nog niet?
The Point is gréat! Eat, knit and be happy! A combination of a yarn shop and a knitting cafe. Stuffed with chatting knitters. There is a bar where you can order drinks and homemade cakes. Jan feel a bit misplaced on his table with a silent knitter, but I had a wonderful time. I found some transparent knitting cases and a bag with the logo of The Point and a skein of 1200 yard alpaca in roses red. And two HiyaHiya sock circulars made of bamboo and only 23 cm long. Why don’t we have that in the Netherlands?
