Estland is geen land voor vegetariers, staat op blz 3 van mijn reisgids. Lekker, dacht ik, en besloot toch maar te gaan. Alleen in het vliegtuig van Estonian Air/KLM moest ik de plak vlees tussen mijn broodje uit peuteren, maar verder, geen probleem hoor. Op iedere menukaart van restaurants in Tallinn staat wel iets vega’s of anders maar een visje.

Estonia is not advised for vegatarians, that is wat is stated on page 3 from my travel guide. Nice, I thought, and decided to go. In the airplane of Estonian Air/KLM I had to pick the piece of meat from the breadroll, but that was the only little problem. On every menu of the restaurants of Tallinn there is something vega or you can choose fish.

Wat had je eigenlijk gedacht hier aan te treffen, vroeg Monika, onze Tallinnse vriendin, de in haar ogen vreemde vragen die ik haar via mail gesteld had, overdenkend. Of je er wel geld kan pinnen (je kan nota bene vrijwel overal met je pinpas betalen!) en of er ‘s nachts wel taxi’s rijden?
Tallinn is een geweldige combi tussen Middeleeuws en modern. Tussen de architectonische gebouwen stopt een trammetje uit het jaar nul. De reizigers worden vervolgens midden op de rijbaan gedumpt, maar daar zijn de Estlanders aan gewend en wij, na bijna verongelukt te zijn, nu ook. En Monika de stuipen op het lijf gejaagd te hebben door constant door rood te lopen……
De infrastructuur zou geweldig zijn, overal mobiel contact en internet, maar Hil’s mobieltje deed er drie dagen over om gewend te raken aan Estland. Vanaf  juni 2011 zal de euro het enige betaalmiddel zijn, nu gebruiken ze nog kronen, maar geen handelaar die onze euro’s weigerde. Gezien de financiëel wat lagere levensstandaard hoop ik voor de Estlanders dat de overgang naar de euro niet al te prijzig zal zijn. Voor ons was alles nu lekker voordeling, 30 tot 50% korting op de hele stad!

What did you expect to find here, Monika, our friend from Tallinn,  asked, remembering the silly questions I asked her in my mails before our arrival. Are there cash dispensers (yep, on every corner of the street and often you can pay with your card and pincode!) and do the taxi’s also ride at night?
Tallinn is a remarkeble combination between the Middle Ages and the modern world. Between the architectual buildings a ancient tram stops. The travelers are dumped on the middle of the street, but the Estonians are used to that and we are so too now after almost being killed. And after frigthend Monika by walking through red lights all the time……
The infrastructure was promised to be very advanced, mobile contact and internet everywhere, but Hil’s mobile took three days to get used to all that modern stuff. From June 2011 the euro will be the only way to pay, now they still use the Estonian Krone, but al merchants accept our euros already. The average financial living standard is a bit low, so I hope for the Estonians that the transition to the euro will not be very expensive. For us it was very cheap now, 30 to 50% discount al everything!

Kant en klaar breiwerk is overal te koop. Overal staat Kasitoo op de gevels, wat aangeeft dat er handgemaakte spullen, stoffen of garens te koop zijn. Wolwinkels in overvloed. Vaak is het breigoed machinegebreid, maar meestal wel van heel behoorlijke kwaliteit. Soms ook handgebreid. Er zijn een aantal wat betere handwerkwinkels waar je de echte goeie spullen kan kopen. Iets duurder, maar een paar handgebreide wanten of handschoenen zal zelden meer dan 20 euro kosten. Probeer daar maar eens tegenop te breien.

Ready made knitwear is for sale everywhere. Everywhere you see Kasitoo op the fronts of the shops, indicating that they sell handmade stuff, fabrics or yarn. Often the knitwear is made by machines, but often it is of very high quality. Sometimes handknitted. There are some beter craft stores in town, where you can find the better items. A bit more expensive, but for a pair of handknitted mitttens or gloves you never pay more then 20 euro. You can’t knit them for less.
