Cheers on our trip to Estonia!

Wat zijn we toch een bofkonten, dat we binnenkort mogen vertrekken naar Tallinn in Estland. Met negen leuke, gezellige breivrienden mag ik dit nieuwe brei-avontuur tegemoet gaan. Een volle week workshops, wolwinkels bezoeken, naar de Kauni wolfabriek, zelf workshop geven en natuurlijk lekker samen eten, een glaasje drinken en een toertje breien.
We are the lucky ones. Soon we will depart for Tallinn in Estonia. With nine of my best knitting friends I can’t wait to start this new knitting adventure. A full week of workshops, visiting wool shops, going to the Kauni wool factory, giving a workshop and of course eating, drinking and knitting together.
De workshops krijgen we van beroemde breiers als Aimee Adasi, Siiri Reimann (yep, dat zijn de auteurs van het beroemde boek The Haapsalu Shawl en Tiina Meeri (auteur van stapels brei- en handwerkboeken). Er ligt een flinke lijst met wolwinkeltjes en ander breigerelateerde bezienswaardigheden klaar. Hil en ik bieden de Estlandse breivrienden een workshop Twijned Breien aan. De basisprincipes van deze techniek zijn in korte tijd te leren en de resultaten zijn prachtig. Een Zweedse techniek die The Dutch Knitters de Estlandse breiers leren, lekker internationaal hè.
The workshops we will taught by Aimee Adasi, Siiri Reimann (yep, these two are the authors of the famous book The Haapsalu Shawl) and Tiina Meeri (author of a pile of knitting and craftsbooks). There is a long list of wool shops and other knitting related things to see. Hil and I will teach a workshop Twined Knitting to our Estonian knitting friends. The basis principles of this technique can be learned in a short period of time and the results are magnificent. A Swedish technique that The Dutch Knitters will teach the Estonian knitter, it is really international.
Gisteren hadden we met de de breireisgenoten een voorpretmiddagje bij mij thuis. Na thee en lekkers spuiden Hil en ik kennis en wetenswaardigheden over de Estlands breiwereld. We lieten onze boeken, shawls en proefjes zien totdat het vooral de breiers met weinig kantbrei-ervaring duizelde. Na de groepsfoto in de tuin op de steiger bij het water met breiwerk en een glaasje Prosecco in de hand, gingen we in de stad op onze vertrouwde breistekkie in de Winkel van Sinkel wat te eten. Vrijwel iedereen was er. Een gevarieerde groep breiers met heel verschillende achtergronden die het er in Estland flink van gaan nemen.
Yesterday we had a afternoon at my place with the participants to prepare for the trip to Estonia. After tea with sweets and cookies Hil and I told them everything about the Estonian knitting world. We showed our books, shawls and samples untill especially the knitters with only little lace knitting experience dropped out. After the group photo in the garden on the quay at the waterfront with knittings and a glass of Prosecco in our hands, we went to town to our regular table in the Winkel van Sinkel to eat something. Almost all participants were there. A group of knitting friends with a lot of variety and different backgrounds that will have a marvelous time in Estonia.
We ontdekten dat als Jans helemaal niet van plan is om Estlandse shawls te gaan breien, dat dit voldongen feit haar de ideale persoon maakt om tijdens de pyamaparty onze wijntjes in te tuten. ‘s Nachts snurkt ze er lekker op los, maar roommate Ingeborn schijnt dat juist een lekker vertrouwd geluidje te vinden en verheugt zich er al op. Met al dat gelach en gekakel leek mijn huis wel een kippenhok. De oude poezen Coquette en Anti waren blij rustig boven te zitten. Ondertussen viel mijn nieuwe boek over de Orenburg breitraditie op de mat. Want als we de Estlandse breitradities tot in de puntjes onderzocht hebben, wacht het volgende project,…… Orenburg. Als je breit, kom je nog eens ergens.
We discovered that Jans wasn’t planning to knit an Estonian shawl at all, but this makes her the ideal person to pour in the wine during pyama parties. At night she snores like a woodworker, but roommate Ingeborn doesn’t mind as the sound will remind her of her young, so she looks forward to it. With all the laughter and noise my house resembled a henhouse. The old cats Coquette and Anti were happy to stay upstairs. In the meanwhile my new book about Orenburg knitting fell in the mailbox. After having researched the Estonian knitting traditions into detail, the next project is waiting for us….. Orenburg. When you knit, you travel a lot.
