Een minibreivakantie van één dag. Dat was onze zalige World Wide Knitting in Public Day in Amsterdam. Onder een stralend blauwe hemel met hooguit wat schapewolkjes, zonder een druppel regen en met een geweldig leuke club breiers.
A mini holiday lasting only one day. That was what our delightful World Wide Knitting in Public Day in Amsterdam was. Under a bright blue sky with only a few small clouds, without a drop of rain and with a great bunch of knitters.
Tegen 13.00 uur verzamelden zich tussen de toeristen op de kade van Holland International Cruises tegenover het Centraal Station meer dan 20 breiers uit het hele land. Swalmen, Utrecht, Volendam, Deventer, een gat in de Achterhoek waar ik nu al weer de naam van ben vergeten en natuurlijk Amsterdam en nog wat plaatsen. De rondbreivaart was een groot succes. Al kwetterend achter in de boot aan de gereserveerde tafels werd er fanatiek gebreid en vergaten we om ons heen te kijken. De reisleider werd gepaaid door Miriam met een in de trein naar Amsterdam door haar gesnelbreide oranje polswarmer, zodat ze niet klaagde over het geluidsniveau dat we produceerden. De rest van de gasten accepteerden het gelaten en zullen vanaf nu breien met veel decibellen associëren…….
At about 13.00 h a group of more than 20 knitters gathered with some tourists on the quay of Holland International Cruises in front of the Central Station. Swalmen, Utrecht, Volendam, Deventer, a tiny village in the Achterhoek of which I can’t even remember the name anymore and of course Amsterdam and some other places. The rondbreivaart was a huge success. Chatting al the time in the back of the boat on our reserved tables there was more knitting going and we forgot to look around. The tour guide was pampered by Miriam with a orange wrist warmer she speedknitted in the train to Amsterdam, so she didn’t complain about the noise we produced. The rest of the guests had to accept it too and will probably in future associate knitting with a lot of decibels.

Na de boottocht gingen de meesten richting De Afstap waar Juup in haar uppie de klanten hielp. De goed gevulde boekenkast was de grootste trekker, vooral voor degenen die van verder weg kwamen en het heerlijk vonden om de boeken voor aanschaf in te zien. Geweldig leuk dat De Afstap ter ere van de WW KIP Day 10% korting gaf! Zelden waren er in het knusse zeventiende eeuwse pand zoveel breiers bij elkaar, want we zijn allemaal gek op wol, ondanks de grote hoeveelheden stash die we allemaal thuis opgestapeld hebben.
After the boat trip we went to De Afstap where Juup all alone handled all business. The bookcase stuffed with knitting books was highly appreciated, especially by those coming from far. They loved to browse through the books before buying them. Great that De Afstap celebrated WW KIP Day giving their customers a discount of 10%! Seldom there were more customers in the cozy seventeenth century building, as we all love to buy yarn, despite our huge piles of stash at home.
Vanaf het Centraal Station namen we met een groep van circa 15 breiers het veer naar de werf. Hoewel we ons eerst even afvroegen waar we inshemelsnaam naartoe geleid werden door de breiers van Stitch ‘n Btich Amstedam Noord, bleek er zich op dit onherbergzame industrieterrein een oase van rust, drank en lekker voedsel te bevinden. In de zonnige serre van Noorderlicht was het warm en goed toeven op de luie banken. We vergeven het ze maar dat ze Knitting in Public afgekort hebben als NIP. De cheesecake en sticky toffee taart smaakten geweldig. Jan profiteerde van de aanwezigheid van Yarnissima en breide onder haar leiding een complete shortrow teen. Na een lekker etentje vertrokken we met de boot van rond 21.00 uur lekker rosig en totaal relaxed huiswaarts. Het was een zálige dag! We hebben genóten! Of zoals Marjan verzuchtte: “Wie had kunnen denken dat ik als Achterhoekse in zo’n hippe tent terecht zou komen……”.
At the back of the Central Station a group of circa 15 knitters took the ferry to the docks. Although we were a bit worried where the knitters of Stitch ‘n Bitch Amstedam Noord lead us on this inhospitable docks, we soon found an oasis of tranquillity, drinks and nice food. In the sunny closed veranda of Noorderlicht it was warm and nice to sit on the cozy coaches. We will forgive them that they called KIP-ping NIP-ting. The cheesecake and sticky toffee cake tasted great. Jan took advantage of sitting next to Yarnissima and knitted with her help a complete shortrow toe. After a nice diner we left for the boat at about 21.00 h. totally relaxed by sun and the nice day. It was a gréat day! We have so much enjoyed ourselves! Or like Marjan putted it: “Who could have thought that I, coming from the Achterhoek, would end up in such a hip place……”.
