In het schattige museumpje The Textiles Museum Böd of Gremista in Lerwick vind je vitrines vol met oud breiwerk. Tot en met oktober is er een expositie over Fair Isle breiwerk, ‘Fair Isle Makes its Mark’. Genieten van de prachtige kleuren en motieven van vintage breiwerk door de jaren heen. In het museum nemen ze het breien serieus, dus er wordt doorlopend gebreid door één of zelfs twee breiers. Je kan ze vragen stellen en ze demonstreren hun werk met de breiriem. Brita, de Zweedse breister die in de zomermaanden vaak in Shetland is, weet ook veel van twijnend breien en maakt prachtige wanten en mutsen.
Beneden is een gezellige museumshop met veel handbreiwerk van breister uit de omgeving. Mijn oog viel direct op een mooie tam (baret) in rose-paarse tinten. De kwaliteit was duidelijk hoger dan wat je normaal in de winkels ziet, dus ik was er direct verliefd op. Er waren ook nog bijpassende handschoenen bij. Het werd een vakantiecadeau van Jan, lief hè.

Enjoy the beautiful colors and designs of vintage knitting through the years. In the museum they take knitting seriously, so there are always one or even two knitters making knitwear. You can ask them questions and they demonstrate hw the knit with the knitting belt. Brita, Swedish knitter who is often in Shetland during the summer months, also knows a lot of twined knitting and makes beautiful mittens and hats.
Downstairs is a cozy museum shop with lots of hand knitting knitter from the area. I immediately saw a pretty tame (beret) in rose-purple hues. The quality was much higher than what you normally see in the shops, so I fell in love with on the spot. There were also matching gloves. It was a holiday gift from Jan, sweet isn’t it.
