Het Betere Breiwerk – Amsterdam
Twee dagen nadat de Koewachtse cursisten hun certificaat ontvingen, waren de cursisten van de Amsterdamse Bijna Betere Breiers bij de Afstap aan de beurt. Na bijna drie maanden hard werken en de focus op hun breitechniek zwaaiden ze vrolijk met hun certificaat voor de groepsfoto, hun hoofd stiekem vol plannen om eerst weer eens lekker recreatief te gaan breien, maar dan wél met alle nieuwe vaardigheden en inzichten. ‘Zelfgemaakt’ wordt ‘handgemaakt’, en dát is waar we naartoe moeten!
Ik sta er soms van te kijken wat cursisten ervoor over hebben om bij alle lessen te kunnen zijn. Vorig seizoen kwam Joke van het Ryahuis in Zuidlaren bij Groningen álle acht keer met een autootje vol naar de Randstad. Cathinka, die pas drie keer in haar leven in Amsterdam was, verdwaalde de eerste les van deze cursus volledig en belde mij dat ze bij een kasteel was en geen idee had hoe ze bij de Afstap moest komen. Het kasteel bleek later het het Rijksmuseum te zijn. Politieagenten die haar aanhielden omdat ze met haar auto midden op het trottoir stond, snapten de paniek omdat ze per se op tijd bij de breicursus moest zijn en brachten haar bijna tot bij de winkel. Politiebegeleiding om naar breiles te gaan! Gekker moet het niet worden…
En dan de laatste les, de regen viel met bakken uit de hemel, maar de cursisten hesen zich in regenpakken en trotseerden de storm. Een winkel vol druipende regenpakken en cursisten op kousenvoeten.
Sowieso, als je peperdure bedrijfscursussen geeft, komt soms een kwart van de cursisten niet opdagen, ze zijn ziek, zwak of misselijk of hebben belangrijkere zaken te doen. Maar bij Het Betere Breiwerk zijn ze er altijd allemaal, of ze zijn écht op leven na dood zijn of iets nóg belangrijkers hebben, bijvoorbeeld een kind of broer die wordt beëdigd of een al geplande vakantie. Dat zegt iets over hoe belangrijk ze de cursus vinden en daar ben ik best een beetje trots op… 😉

Two days after the students in Koewacht received their certificate, the students and Almost Better Knitters of the Amsterdam groep at the Afstap, had their turn. After nearly three months of hard work and focus on their knitting technique they waved cheerfully with their certificate for the group photo, their heads full of secret plans to now start some nice recreational knitting, but this time with all the new skills and insights. ‘Homemade’ is now ‘handmade ‘, and that’s whati it is all about!
I am astonished to see what students do to to be able to attend all classes. Last season Joke of the Ryahuis in Zuidlaren near Groningen (in the very North of the Netherlands) all of eight times with a toy car packed to the Randstad (center of country). Cathinka, who had been only three times in her life in Amsterdam, was lost when she tried to drive into Amsterdam for the first lesson of this course. Shecalled me and told me she saw a castle (which turned out to be the Rijksmuseum lateron). She was desperate to find the Afstap. Police officers who cought her parking on the sidewalk, understood her panic when she told them she really needed to be on time for the knitting course and brought her almost to the shop. Police guidance for going to knitting class! It can’t get any crazier…
And the night of the last lessen, the rain was pouring from the sky , but the students all put on raincoats and braved the storm. Dripping raincoats all over the shop and students on their socks. Anyhow, when I gave any expensive business course sometimes a quarter of the students do not show up, pretending to be sick or they just have more important stuff to do. But for my knititng course Het Betere Breiwerk they are always all present, or there is sume real serious going or, such as a child or sibling who is getting his diplom or a already booked holiday. That proofs to me how important they find the course and I’m quite proud of that… 😉
