Linda Elgas, inmiddels rond de 80 jaar oud, is de beroemdste kantbreister van Haapsula in Estland. De oude dame breit nog steeds en komt soms zelfs naar de Haapsalu Shawl-dag en Mardilaat. Ze is een legende bij leven en ik bewonder haar enorm. In het boek Haapsalu Shawl, geschreven door Aime Edasi en Siiri Reimann in 2009, staan foto’s van haar. Wat een gewéldig pittig dametje, ik hoop haar nog eens te ontmoeten en persoonlijk te bedanken voor haar prachtige breiwerk en alles wat ze heeft gedaan voor de breiwerereld.

Linda Elgas, now about 80 years old, is one of the most famous laceknitters of Haapsalu in Estonia. The old lady still knits and sometimes even comes to the Haapsalu Shawl Day and Mardilaat. She is allready a legend and I admire her a lot. In the book Haapsalu Shawl, written by Aime Edasi and Siiri Reimann in 2009 you can find images of her. Such a lifely old lady, a real riot, I hope to meet her one day and thank her personnally for her beautiful knittings and all she done for the knitting world. 

Vele jaren daarvoor schreef Linda het boek Haapsalu Rätikud met patronen waarmee de breisters in Haapsalu shawls konden breien die soms commerciëel verkocht werden. Monika gaf me het inmiddels lang uitverkochte en zeer gewilde boek na haar bezoek aan Nederland. Wat was ik daar blij mee, ik viel haast van mijn stoel van blijdschap. Sindsdien is de uitdrukking voor een gewéldig moment een ‘Linda-Elgas-momentje’, wat het ook is…

Many years earlier Linda wrote the book Haapsalu Rätikud with patterns which the knitters in Haapsula could use to knit shawls that could be commercially sold. Monika gave me the long out of print book that every lace knitter wants to have after her visit to the Netherlands. I was thrilled, so happy, that I almost fell of my chair. Since that moment the expression for a wónderful moment is a ‘Linda-Elgas-moment’, what ever it is…

Nu staat er op ons dressoir in de woonkamer een doos met een handtekening van Linda Elgas. In de doos zit een shawl van mooi wolwit kantgaren in een prachtig patroon mét nupps. Haast niemand mag eraan zitten, en dan nog alleen na controle van nagels en handen. Monika heeft voor mij geregeld dat Linda deze shawl speciaal voor mij heeft gebreid.  Aime Edasi werd ingeschakeld om alles te regelen. Tijdens Mardilaat leverde Linda de doos met shawl zelf bij Monika af. Toen hij verleden week bij me werd afgeleverd door de postbode had ik weer een Linda-Elgas-momentje!

Now stands on the closet in our livingroom a box signed by Linda Elgas. In the box there is a shawl made of beautiful wool white lace yarn with a elegant pattern with nupps. Almost no one may touch is, a if I permit it is after checking nails and hands. Monika has arranged that Linda made this shawl especially for me. Aime Edasi organised things too. During Mardilaat Linda herself brought the shawl to Monika. When the postman delivered it to me last week I had another Linda-Elgas-moment!
