Sinds de opkomst van het internet is de wereld mijn speeltuintje. Dat ik al snel die mening was toegedaan toen ik in 1995 als een van de eerste vrouwen in Nederland het internet op ging, bleek uit de naam die ik mijn website (toen nog ‘homepage’ ;-)) gaf: Carla’s Digital Playground. Je kan er nog steeds onze vijf Siamezen bewonderen of er achter komen welke hobbies man Jan en ik nog meer hebben. Destijds nog ICT’er in hart en nieren, riep ik regelmatig uit: ‘Laat mij maar met de computers spelen’, en deed zo vaardigheden op die me nu als breister dagelijks van pas komen.
Since the development of the internet the world is my playground. That was my opinion when in 1995 I was one of the first Dutch women going online. I named my website (‘homepage’ was the name then ;-)) Carla’s Digital Playground. You can still see our five Siamese cats there and find out what more hobbies my husband Jan and I have. Then an ICT professional I often said to my students and collegues: ‘Let me play with the computers!’ and doing that I acquired the skills I now use as a knitter on a daily basis.
Net zoals fotografie pas echt leuk werd toen het digitaal werd, bleek ook breien een enorme impuls te krijgen uit de digitale hoek. De breiwereld ligt letterlijk voor je open als je de moed hebt om je te verdiepen in het internet. Google de zoekterm ‘knitting’ en je hebt ruim 32 miljoen links tot je beschikking. Ga er maar aan staan, geen minuut meer over om te breien.
In the way photografy became fun since it was digital, knitting also got an impuls from the digital world. The knitting world litterally is open to you if you have the courage to dive into the internet. Look up the search word ‘knitting’ on Google and find an amazing more than 32 million hits. Well, no more time to knit.
Surfend over het net kom ik de mooiste breisels uit alle uithoeken van de wereld tegen. Overal pik ik de mooiste steekjes en patroontjes op, bestel de leukste boeken, van Schots tot Scandinavisch tot Japans en laat me inspireren door bijzondere technieken. Swaps met Ravelry-vrienden leveren de interessantste lokale garens en boeken van overal ter wereld op. Angst voor vreemde talen raak je al snel kwijt tijdens dit proces. Ik spreek al brei-Japans, brei-Zweeds en een beetje brei-Estlands. Via workshops, dit blog en diverse sites deel ik mijn vondsten graag met breivrienden wereldwijd. En zonder de eigenheid van de tradities van ieder land geweld aan te doen, combineer ik alles wat ik mooi vind. Fusion Cooking had je al, nu heb je ook Fusion Knitting!
Surfing over the net I found the most beautiful knittings from all over the world. Everywhere I picked out the best stitches and patterns, ordered the nicest books, from Scottish to Scandinavian to Japanses and found inspiring special techniques. Swasp with Ravelry friends brought me the most interesting local yarns and books from several countries. Fear for exotic languages you loose in the process. I now speak knitting-Japanese, knitting-Swedish and a bit of knitting-Estonian. Through workshops, this blog and several sites I share my findings with knitting friends all over the world. Respecting the traditions of every country, I combine what I like best. Fusion Cooking is around for some time, but now we also have Fusion Knitting!
Maar het proces van vermenging van breikunsten is op beperktere schaal al een poosje aan de gang. Al sinds de Middeleeuwen zien we een vermenging van breikunsten rond de Noordzee en Baltische zee. In diverse Scandinavische landen duikt de Zweedse techniek Twijnend Breien op. Mooie ragfijne kanten shawls met panelen en randen zie je van de Shetland-eilanden tot in Estland en in het Russische Orenburg. De Noorse Ster duikt ook overal op, van Noorwegen tot in Schotland tot in Groenlo waar hij op de Grolse Wanten prijkt. Zeelieden verspreidden de technieken en motieven overal waar ze kwamen. Toch zet Alice Starmore daar vraagtekens bij. Ze liet een aantal mensen vanuit hun eigen creativiteit vierkantje vlakjes vullen en tot haar verbazing ontstonden spontaan ronde en kruisvormen. De ‘hugs and kisses’ (OXO – rondjes zijn omarmingen en kruisjes kusjes) van het traditionele Fair Isle-breiwerk van de Schotse eilanden.
But the process of mixing knitting stuff is allready there for some time. Since the Middle Ages we see a fusion of knitting crafts along the Nord Sea and the Baltic Sea. In several Scandinavian countries we find the Swedish technique Twined Knitting. Lovely thin lace shawls with panels and borders are knitted from the Shetland Islands to Estonia and in the Russion Orenburg. The Norwegian Star also shows up in several places, from Norwegia to Scotland and the Dutch town Groenlo where he is the ornament on the Grolse Wanten. Sailers spread the techniques and motifs everywhere they landed. But Alice Starmore is not sure about this theory. She asked a group of people to draw something creative in little squares and to her estonishment spontaneously people ended up with circles and crosses. The ‘hugs and kisses’ (OXO – rounds are hugs and crosses are kisses) of the traditional Fair Isle knittings from the Scottish islands.
Via de pioneers komt de breikunst uit Europa ook in Amerika terecht. Daar had Elizabeth Zimmermann een soortgelijke ervaring als haar collega Alice Starmore. Breiproblemen hebben vaak logische oplossingen die op verschillende momenten, op diverse plekken en door meerdere breisters worden ‘ontdekt’. Geharrewar over wie wat ontdekte was volgens de praktisch ingestelde vrouw niet nodig, dus ze noemde het herontdekken ‘unventing’ en breide verder.
The pioneers brought the art of European knitting to America. There Elizabeth Zimmermann had a simular experience as her collegue Alice Starmore. Knitting problems often have logical solutions that are found on different moments, on several locations and by more than one knitter. Fighting about who discovered what was not necessary, according to the practical woman, she called it ‘unventing’ and just knitted on.
