My first week in Shetland

Kerst is erg belangrijk in Shetland.

Today I am a full week in Shetland. Last Saturday, just after the storm period,  I arrived in Sumburgh after a smooth journey. I will live until 1 February as Artist in Residence at the Booth in Scalloway, the old Viking capital of the archipelago. The Booth is a small detached cottage on the bay overlooking the ocean. It is real eye candy with it’s blue painted walls with red shutters. The foundations are the oldest building in Scalloway where the fish used to be sold. From the kitchen window I can see Rosemarie from Harbour Knitting working behind her window. Through the large windows on the side of the bay you can see a seal swimming every morning. The sailors who work in the harbor seem to spoil him with fish, so he stayed here. Upstairs is the living area with a living room, kitchen, bathroom and sleeping loft and downstairs a studio space, but that is a little cold in winter.

It is not many hours of day light, from about 9 o’clock in the morning to 15 o’clock in the afternoon, so I consciously make good use of the light hours to make trips, such as tours through the beautiful landscape, or shopping in Lerwick or Scalloway. Every day I start with a nice latte and cake in one of the many cozy cafes. And I knit a lot, because with an environment that is so inspiring, sheep everywhere, cozy knitting nights at Loose Ends and in the museum in Scalloway, wool shops with beautiful Shetland wool and encounters with many nice Shetlanders, that goes without saying. Tommy, the famous cat with a Facebook page, has already been spotted in Lerwick. And of course I bought his calendar.

Christmas is very important in Shetland. Supermarkets sell loads of real British Christmas specialties, on TV you can see very sweet Christmas movies all day long and you can see Christmas decorations everywhere. Even the swimming pool, with a great hot tub and within walking distance of the Booth, is already festively decorated. Next Friday there is Make More Noise, an alternative Christmas Eve in the Mareel where I have already bought tickets for. It is an 18-plus evening with a burlesque dancer, I’m wonder what that will be like! And a white Christmas, the chance is small here in Shetland, even though I’ve had snow for one day.

Car rental company Bolts made sure that I can drive a nice rental car again, because without transport you will not get far in Shetland. Driving in the evening is adventurous, because it is pitch dark outside the towns, but I’m already getting used to the darkness. And who knows, I might see again the ‘mirrie dancers’ or the northern lights.

It will not be long and then Jan also joins in, we are going to enjoy Christmas and New Year together here. He is going to paint icons again. And enjoy the real Shetland life as a semi local…
