De tweede dag van het Knitting Camp startte met een presentatie van Zinta Vãrpiņa. Op tafel kwamen replica’s van prachtige oude wanten uit de regio Saldus, waar ze over vertelde en waar we uitgebreid foto’s van mochten maken. Mãra Mertena, een van de medecursisten, had een tas vol wanten en handschoenen bij zich om te showen. Daarna leerden we een paar mooie boordjes, waaronder die met driehoekjes in verkorte toeren.
Na de lunch begon het ‘schoolreisje’ naar Talsi. Met z’n allen gezellig de bus in en in sukkeldraf naar het museum, waar we het depot bezochten. Je weet niet wat je ziet, lade na lade vol met oude wanten, prachtig! Ook het museumpje nog even doorgelopen, waar we vooral veel lol hadden met het apparaat dat foto’s van een groepje kon nemen, waarna de hoofden in een oude ansichtkaart met vrouwen in klederdracht werd geplaatst.
The second day of the Knitting Camp started with a presentation of Zinta Vãrpiņa. On the table were replicas of beautiful old mittens from Saldus region. Zinta explained all kind of details on the knitwear and we were allowed to take photos. Mãra Mertena, one of the other participants, had a bag full of mittens and gloves with her to show. Then we learned a few nice cuffs, including those with triangles in short rows.
After lunch, the ‘schooltrip’ to Talsi began. Together cosy in the bus and in a slow tempo to the museum, where we visited the depot. It was amazing what we saw there, so many beautiful old mittens, gloves and socks in a lot of drawers. We also walked throught the museumm where we had a lot of fun with the device that could take pictures of a group of people, placing the heads in an old postcard with women in costumes.

Talsi is een idyllisch dorpje aan het water. Külli poseerde in haar mooie vintagejurk met deze prachtige achtergrond. We bezochten een keramist, waar LiesW een breipot kocht. Een talentvolle weefster liet ons haar atelier zien. We troffen het, want op het binnenplaatsje was een activiteit met kinderen in dracht, die het topleuk vonden om synchroon omhoog te springen voor de fotograaf.
Tot slot werden we naar een kamer geleid waar de plaatselijke breiers ons opwachten om ons trots hun werk te tonen. Weer een tafel vol wanten en handschoenen, de een nog mooier dan de ander. Een van de wanten was gemaakt in een heel speciaal steekje dat ik nog nooit gezien had, dat ik thuis al heb uitgeprobeerd. De effecten ervan zijn sensationeel leuk. Maar daarover later meer…
Wij hadden inmiddels wel een ijsje verdiend, dus doken snel de supermarkt even in. Linda Rubena deed ook meteen een boodschapje naast het potje rijstdrank dat ze had gehad, ze kocht een heerlijk flesje Balsam voor een slaapmutsje. Nooit zagen we meer wanten op één dag, dus dat werd vast dromen van al dat moois, Prieka!
Talsi is an idyllic lakeside village. Külli posed in her beautiful vintage dress with this beautiful background. We visited a pottery maker, where LiesW bought a bowl to hold her ball of yarn. A talented weaver showed us her atelier. We were lucky, because in the courtyard there was an activity with children in costume who found it awesome to jump synchronously up for the photographer who was taking their picture.
Finally, we were led to a room where local knitters were waiting for us to proudly show their work. Another table full of mittens and gloves, each more beautiful than the other. One of the patterns was created in a very special stitch I had never seen before, which I’ve tried at home. Its effects are sensational fun. But more on that later …
We already had earned an ice cream, so quickly surfaced in the supermarket here. Linda Rubena got a jar with rice drink, but also bought a bottle of Balsam for a nightcap. Never we saw so many mittens on one day, so she must have been dreaming of all that knitwear, Prieka!
