In the north-west of the region Kurzeme (Courland) you find Ventspils, where you can eat delicious culinary snacks in cute little restaurants. There is also a castle with display cases full of traditional jewelry and some showcases with costumes from the area. But the reason for our visit was actually the craft house Amatu Maja, where we were received to meet the weavers and see them in action behind their impressive looms. And of course, we found lots of stuff to buy in the shop bought because there was a wonderfully diverse collection of nice Latvian handicrafts.
The most special item was the yarn made of real amber. This new wafer-thin material is also likely to be used in health care as suture material, but you can also mix it with cloth orother fibers and knit with it. I bought a set of gray-blue mittens, as I liked to have something of this funny modern material.

In one of the rooms was an exhibition of the work of local schoolchildren. It looked top off, especially the red spencer, and you can hardly imagine that our Dutch kids could do te same. But it is in Latvia apparently different. There’s handiwork or education is valued in all primary schools and really handicraft. A look into the past, schools were given to us by the authentic old class lokaaltje complete with slates and slate pencils and a harmonicum.
