Life 'n Knitting

Stel je eens voor, je mag de hele maand juli in een prachtig appartement bij de Sumburgh vuurtoren op het zuidelijkste puntje van het Mainland in Shetland doorbrengen… vanuit je ramen zie je de oceaan, het vliegveld, in de verte onder meer het eilandje Fair Isle en soms zelfs walvissen of dolfijnen. Maar we gaan er zéker massa’s puffins (papegaaiduikers) zien. Shetland is uitgeroepen tot de beste plaats ter wereld om deze koddige vogeltjes te zien die op de meer dan honderd meter hoge kliffen iedere zomer hun nesten bouwen.

Jan en ik zijn als ‘Artists in Residence‘ gevraagd voor dit spannende avontuur om ons ter plekke te laten inspireren door Shetland, de prachtige natuur, cultuur en rijke historie. Jan zal er een op Shetland geïnspireerde icoon schilderen en ik ga me op de breicultuur werpen. Ik ga er nieuwe patronen ontwerpen en hoop er meer te ontdekken over de relaties tussen de breitradities van Shetland en de Fair Isle-motieven en die uit de Baltische staten en Nederland. Binnenkort meer informatie over onze activiteiten gedurende de periode dat we in Shetland ‘wonen’.

Imagine, you can spend the entire month of July in a beautiful apartment at the Sumburgh Lighthouse on the most Southern spot of the Mainland in Shetland… from your windows you can see the ocean, the airport , in the distance among others the island Fair Isle and sometimes even whales or dolphins. But we are definitely seeing lots of puffins. Shetland has been declared the best place in the world to see these cute, comical birds who build their nests every summer on more than one hundred meters high cliffs.

Jan and I have been asked as ‘Artists in Residence‘ for this exciting adventure to give us the chance to Shetland inspired by the beautiful nature, culture and rich history. Jan will paint a Shetland-inspired icon and I’m going to do some serieus investigation into the knitting culture. I’m going to design new patterns and hope to discover more about the relationships between the knitting traditions of Shetland and Fair Isle patterns and those from the Baltic states and the Netherlands.
