Fair Isle, the island which lies about 60 km below the main island of Mainland Shetland, has given its name to the Fair Isle technique. This is where the technique Fair Ilse originated, so of course Jan and I wanted to go there. And you bet that it was quite an adventure! Flying seemed much nicer than the boat to me, so we took a round trip from Tingwall Airport. A tiny plane for only four to six passengers took us in about half an hour to gorgeous Fair Isle, where our new landlady Kathy was waiting for us. When I saw the first Fair Isle breiseltje in her car, I already felt at home. Katherine, one of the other guests, was pleasantly surprised to learn that I am the author of So Warm!, the book that was on her wish list. She had tried twined knitting already and proudly showed show me her gloves. She is also good at weaving, so one of her blankets went with us to the Netherlands, as did a bag of real Fair Isle yarns from local sheep, procuded by Kathy.

The island has exactly 57 inhabitants when we were there, so is someone makes that call to another inhabitant, he/she just say only the first name. Just a few little houses, one or two churches, a burial place, a bird observatory and beautiful lighthouses, that’s about it. We made some beautiful walks on the cliffs. Sun, sea, wind, cockle shells and everywhere you look you see sheep and seabirds. It is so extremely beautiful!

The weather in Shetland can change very quickly, so it was uncertain whether we would have to spend at least one extra night on Fair Isle. Luckily, one of the pilots dared to fly his plane between showers to fly four of us to the Mainland. Jan learned to knit in this special place, awaiting the flight. During the flight we saw whales and we could also spot the castle and our house in Scalloway.

Soon more about the Fair Isle knitting!
