Sirri, sirri, sirriiiiii…….!

Sirri, dat is het merk van het de knotten garen in het mandje dat op de stand van Drops stond. Tine Jenssen vertelde me dat het afkomstig is van de Faroe-eilanden en al eeuwenlang volgens de traditie gesponnen en getwijnd wordt. Dat voel je. Lekker ruig garen in natuurtinten dat nog ruikt naar lanoline en schaap. Fris gewassen schaap, dát wel!
En ‘Sirri, sirri, sirri……’, dat is de roep van de herders als ze de schapen verzamelen.
Er is ongetwijnd dun garen (rechter foto), getwijnd met 2 of 3 draadjes, ongesponnen materiaal en een stevig garen (middelste foto) dat me wel geschikt lijkt voor kleedjes of zo. Er liggen voorbeelden van gebreid en vervild materiaal, dus ook mutsen en tassen zijn hiervan prima te vilten.
O ja, als je ook wilt bestellen bij Drops, zal je even moeten wachten, ik heb bijna de hele voorraad weggesleept……

Sirri, that is the trademark of the balls of yarns in a basket on the table of Drops. Tine Jenssen told me that it is from the Faroe-islands. For centuries it is spun and twined in a traditional way. That you can feel. Nice sturdy yarn in natural colors and smelling like lanolin and sheep. Freshly washed sheep, that is!
And ‘Sirri, sirri, sirri……’, that’s what the shepards call to gather their sheep.
There is untwined thin yarn (right photo), 2ply or 3ply twined yarn, unspun material and a strong yarn (middle photo) that seems to be good for rugs or so. Readymade examples of knitted wool that is felted afterwards proof that hats and bags can be made of it.
Btw, if you want to order some from Drops, you will have to be patient, I have bought almost all they had in stock……
