De eilanden Saaremaa en Muhu zijn dun bevolkt. Tijdens de ritten over de lange boswegen en ‘dustroads’ die de lak van je auto doen spatten en dikke wolken stof produceren, zie je maar weinig mensen. In Kuressaare bracht Janne ons naar Know Sheep, een atelierachtige winkel waar je de prachtigste spullen kan kopen. Alles van en met wol natuurlijk. Eén van ons ging voor een rond stuk gevilte Wensleydale, waar ze een hippe tas van gaat maken en iemand anders viel voor soortgelijke krulletjes, maar dan aan gevilte pantoffels. En ik vond, naast wat heerlijke eerlijke wol van Sörve Villaveski (zie vorige blog over deze gewéldige wolfabriek) twee paar polswarmers van garen met hondenwol. Mooi gemaakt en leuke kleurenkeuze. Die vilten puntenmuts is niet aangeschaft hoor.

Know Sheep is een internationaal project om de schapenhouderij van Baltische eilandschapen in de Baltische staten en Finland te verbeteren, het dierenwelzijn te bevorderen en kleinschalige productiviteit te verhogen. De posters met mooie naakte meisjes tussen de schapen trekken de aandacht van toeristen. Sex sells, ook wol. Wie eenmaal binnen is, gaat vast niet weg zonder iets mooi wolligs in de tas.

The islands Saaremaa and Muhu are sparsely populated. During the rides on long forest roads and dust roads that make the car paint sputter off your car and produce thick clouds of dust, you hardly see any people. In Kuressaare Janne took us to Know Sheep, a studio-like shop where you can buy the most beautiful things. All made from and with wool of course. One of us chose a round felted piece of Wensleydale of which she is going to make a trendy bag and someone else fell for the same kind of curls but in the shape off a pair of felted slippers. And I found, besides Sörve Villaveski’s lovely, fair trade yarn (see my previous blog about this fabulous yarn factory), two pairs of wrist warmers of yarn with dog hair. Beautifully made and in a nice colour choice.  By the way, I didn’t buy the felted pointed hat.

Know Sheep is an international project to improve the sheep farms of the Baltic island sheep in the Baltic States and Finland, to promote animal welfare and increase small-scale productivity. The posters with the beautiful naked girls amongst the sheep attract tourist attention. Sex sells, as wool does. Once you’re inside, you probably won’t leave without something nice and woolly in your bag.
