Life 'n Knitting

Op de foto van plattegrond van Haapsalu wordt een deel van de boulevard omringd door Estlands kantbreisel in het Greta Garbo-motief. Dat geeft aan dat er waarde wordt gehecht aan het feit dat de mooiste Estlandse kanten shawls uit dit stadje komen. Het was hier dat Linda Elgas Aime Edasi leerde hoe de shawls op traditionele wijze worden gebreid. Samen met Siiri Reimann schreef Aime Haapsalu Sall (Engelse uitgave The Haapsalu Shawl), een boek vol informatie, foto’s en stekenpatronen. Een workshop krijgen van deze twee meesterbreiers is dan ook het mooiste wat je als serieus kantbreier kan overkomen.

On the front picture of the map of Haapsalu part of the boulevard is surrounded by Estonian lace knitting in the Greta Garbo pattern. This indicates that it is really valued that the most beautiful Estonian lace shawls come from this little town. It was here that Linda Elgas taught Aime Edasi how to knit these shawls in the traditional way. Together with Siiri Reimann Aime wrote Haapsalu Sall (English version Haapsalu Shawl), a book filled with information, photos and charts. Being taught by these two master knitters in a workshop is the most fantastic thing that can happen to a serious lace knitter.

Nelleke, onze breivriendin die met manlief rondreisde door Noord-Europa, verlegde haar programma om de workshop bij te wonen. En wij gingen samen met Monika en Liivi met de bus naar Haapsalu. Daar werden we aan de ingang van het gymnasium begroet door Aime, Siiri en Irma de tolk. Het handwerklokaal, het mooiste lokaal van de hele school, was ingericht met allerlei kreatieve spullen aan de wand, waaronder twee enorme gequilte wandkleden met stukjes kantbreisel. Gewéldig!

Nelleke, our knitting friend who travelled through Northern Europe, adjusted her programme to be able to attend the workshop. And we went to Haapsalu together with Monika and Liivi by bus. In Haapsalu we were welcomed at the entrance of the gymnasium by Aime, Siiri and Irma the interpreter. The crafts classroom, the nicest classroom of the entire school was decorated with all kinds of creative items on the wall, among which two enormous quilted tapestries with small pieces of lace knitting. Fantastic!

Tot de pauze werd de historie van de shawls verteld en voorbeelden getoond. Met het originele garen zetten we daarna steken op voor een minishawltje. Voor sommigen van ons een eitje, maar de beginnende kantbreiers hadden het knap moeilijk. Maar iedereen werkte zich moedig door de opdrachten heen. Zelfs Jans. Aime en Siiri vonden Hil en mij saaie cursisten omdat we weinig begeleiding nodig hadden, maar toen we na de pauze stevig doorvroegen op de kleinste details, snapten ze dat we de kans grepen om onze eigen workshops volkomen perfect te maken. En omdat ze zelf perfectionisten zijn, vonden ze dat alleen maar leuk. Gelukkig bleken er weinig aanpassingen nodig zodat onze cursisten van de workshop Estlands Kant gerust kunnen zijn.

Till the break they told us about thehistory of the shawls and examples were shown. Then we started casting on a mini-shawl with the original yarn. For some of us a piece of cake, but the beginning lace knitters had a rough time. But everyone got through the assignments in the end. Even Jans. Aime and Siiri thought Hil and I were dull students because we needed little guidance, but when, after the brake, we started to ask questions very thoroughly about the tiniest details they understood that we grabbed the chance to perfect our own workshops. And because they are perfectionists themselves they didn’t mind at all but just liked it. Fortunately almost no adjustments are necessary so our students of the Estonian Lace workshop can rest assured.

Als extra bedankje voor het feit dat de docenten bij uitzondering ons deze workshop hebben gegeven, hebben we ze overstelpt met cadeautjes. Ook aan Irma de tolk werd gedacht. Iedereen had iets meegenomen, souvenirs uit Nederland, zelfgemaakte cadeautjes, breispullen. Er kwam geen einde aan de rij breiers met pakjes in hun handen. We waren ze ook zó dankbaar voor deze hele bijzondere dag. Aime pinkte een traantje weg en met z’n drietjes zwaaiden ze ons uit.

As an extra thanks for the fact that as an exception the teachers offered us this workshop we loaded them with presents. Also Irma the interpreter wasn’t forgotten. Everyone brought something, souvenirs from The Netherlands, handmade gifts, knitting gadgets. The row of knitters with presents to give was endless. But we were really thankful for this very special day. Aime wiped away a tear and the three of them waved us goodbye.

Deze workshop, zowel de inhoud, als het feit dat hij werd gegeven door de vriendelijke meesterbreiers in Haapsalu, was het hoogtepunt van de reis voor mij. Ik koester de herinnering aan het beeld dat Aime en Siiri met onze eerste echte Haapsalu shawls over de schouders staan voor het quilt met breiproeven. Over de prachtige rondleiding die ze ons na de lunch gaven, vertel ik jullie later meer.

This workshop, the contents as well as the fact that it was taught by the friendly master knitters of Haapsalu, was the highlight of this trip for me. I cherish the memory of Aime and Siiri wearing our first real Haapsalu shawls around their shoulders standing in front of the quilt with knitting samples. Later on I’ll tell you more about the wonderful tour they gave us after lunch.
