Life 'n Knitting

Rond de tienduizend bezoekers keerden de afgelopen dagen zwaar beladen met ideeën, inspiratie en tassen vol nieuwe creatieve materialen huiswaarts na een dagje beurzen. The Dutch Knitters droeg haar steentje daaraan bij door honderden belangstellenden te vertellen over twijnend breien en hen deze prachtige techniek te demonstreren. De vele mogelijkheden waren te bewonderen in de vele projecten die op de tafel waren uitgestald. En nu we zoveel mensen hebben verteld over ons voornemen volgend jaar een dik boek over twijnend breien te publiceren, moeten we wel hè.

Some ten thousand visitors returned homewards after a day at the fair the past few days, loaded with new ideas, inspiration and bags filled with new creative materials. The Dutch Knitters, made our contribution by telling hundreds of people about twined knitting and by demonstrating this beautiful technique to them. One could admire the many possibilities in all the projects that were to been seen on the table. And now that we have told so many people about our intention to publish a thick book about twined knitting next year, we have to, don’t we?

Vier dagen was best een afmattingsslag met al dat gereis erbij, maar iedere dag gebeurt er wel iets leuks en dat houdt de moed erin. Zoals het kopen van het ongelooflijk bijzondere boek van Berthi Smith over merk- en stoplappen gemaakt door de weesmeisjes uit het Burgerweeshuis in Amsterdam (Merk- en stoplappen uit het Burgerweeshuis Amsterdam). Op vrijdag was zelfs mevrouw Ruinemans er, die uit handen van Berthi het eerste exemplaar kreeg uitgereikt. Ik heb grote bewondering voor Berthi, voor haar grondigheid, perfectionisme en gedrevenheid om een mooi verhaal te vatten in een prachtig vormgegeven boek. Dit boek is een juweeltje, niet alleen voor de borduurders, maar voor iedereen die voor textiel en de historische achtergronden van textiel houdt. Wie het nu niet koopt, krijgt later spijt.

Four days are quite a lot with all the traveling as well, but something nice happens every day and that keeps up the spirit. Such as buying Berthi Smith’s incredible book about samplers and darning samplers made by the orphan girls from the Burgerweeshuis (orphanage) in Amsterdam  (Merk- en stoplappen uit het Burgerweeshuis Amsterdam). Even Mrs. Ruinemans was there on Friday, who received the first copy from Berthi. I admire Berthi enormously, her thoroughness, perfectionism and passion to summarize a beautiful story in an excellently designed book. This book is a real gem, not just for embroiderers, but for anyone who loves textile and the historical background of textile. If you don’t buy it now, you will regret it later on.

Of je vindt in een kraampje waar spullen voor moederhuizen in Bosnië worden verkocht een prachtig paar geborduurde handschoenen. Kant en klaar gebreid en met kruissteekjes gestikt. Dat alles voor een tientje en daarmee steun je ook nog eens het goede doel. Wie wil er nu nog machinaal gebreide handschoenen?

Or you come across a pair of beautifully embroidered gloves in a stand where they sell products to support mother houses in Bosnia. Hand knitted and embroidered in cross stitch. And all this for just 10 euros and at the same time you support a good cause. Who still wants to buy machine-knitted gloves?

Hanneke, collega bij de Afstap én schrijver van Wereldtasjes, gaf workshops bij Loret en signeerde haar boek. Collega Jans was er ook nog, samen met Ati, die lekkere vegahapjes en een grote gifgroene Indonesische cake voor ons meebracht. Wat kan dat mens toch zálig koken. De cake bleek goed te passen bij het truitje van Miriam Tegels, de snelbreier, die net zo snel als ze breid haar stuk cake weghapte, want het smaakte haar prima.

Hanneke, my colleague at de Afstap and writer of the book Wereldtasjes, gave classes at Loret and signed her book. Colleague Jans was there as well, together with Ati, who brought us delicious vegetarian snacks and a big bright green Indonesian cake. That woman can cook! The cake appeared to fit perfectly with the green sweater Miriam Tegels, the speed knitter was wearing, who ate the cake as quickly as she knits, for she liked it a lot.

En dan die aardige Carin Beldhuis, die bij haar kringloopwinkel antieke breiseltjes vond, die ze me zomaar gaf. Hartverwarmend, want ze zijn zo mooi en ik koester de spulletjes die ooit met veel zorg werden gebreid en dan ook nog op zo’n lieve manier bij mij terecht komen.

And then this very nice Carin Beldhuis, who found some antique knitting in her thrift shop and just gave them to me. Heartwarming, because they are so beautiful and I love articles that were once knitted with care and end up in my hands in such a lovely way.

Zoveel vrienden kwamen naar Zwolle en doken op voor ons kraampje. Ook Juul, vriendin van Marnel die de eerste breireis naar Estland met ons meemaakten. Juul brak daar haar arm, maar ze is een bikkel en reist nog steeds over de wereld. Uit Nieuw-Zeeland bracht ze voor mij een breipen mee, maar kijk maar eens goed, hiermee kan je schrijven én breien. Maar het fijnst van alles is iedereen weer even zien. Sommigen vrolijk, uitgelaten en kooplustig, maar één van onze lieve vrienden kon het uitstapje alleen maar zien als een korte vlucht uit de dagelijkse werkelijkheid die leidt naar verlies en afscheid. Je geeft een knuffel en wenst sterkte, wat meer kan je doen?

So many friends came to Zwolle and appeared before our stand. For instance Juul, she is Marnel’s friend, who accompanied us to the first trip to Estonia. Juul broke her arm there, but she is a fighter and still travels all around the world. From New Zealand she brought me a knitting pen, but pay attention, you can write and knit with them. But the nicest part is to meet everyone again. Some of them happy, skittish and in the mood to buy, but one of our dear friends could only consider this visit a brief escape from everyday reality that leads to loss and farewell. You give this friend a big hug and wish him strength, what more can you do?

De laatste dag kwam Els Scholtens ons opzoeken om ons de breirol van haar oma te laten zien. Ik was even van mijn plek, maar iemand wist dat ze bij de koffiecorner zat en had gezegd dat ze me er heen zou sturen in mijn Dutch Knitters-schortje. Ik moest dus maar even daar rondlopen, dan zou ze me wel zien. Dat geparadeer leverde me zes complimenten voor het schortje en het weerzien met twee excursisten uit België op. En twee mannen en een vrouw die dachten dat ze sjans met me hadden toen ik rond hun tafeltje flaneerde in de hoop dat ze me aan zouden schieten om de breirol te tonen. Gelukkig dook Els uiteindelijk toch nog op, zodat ik de breirol toch nog kon zien. Prachtig werk, wat een mooi familiestuk. Samen verdiepten we ons in één van de patroontjes die zich moeizaam liet ontcijferen.

The last day Els Scholtens came to visit us to show us her grandma’s knitting sampler. I was not there at that moment, but iemand knew that they would be at the coffee corner and told them she would send me there in my Dutch Knitters’ apron. So I had to walk around there and then they would probably spot me. All this parading resulted in six compliments for my apron and a meeting with two ex-students from Belgium. And two men and one woman who thought I was flirting with them when I gallivanted around their table in the hope they would show me their knitting sampler. Fortunately, Els ended up after all so that I could admire the knitting sampler. Such beautiful work, such a lovely family heirloom.

MoniqueB, van de mooie kanten shawls, gaf mij een privédemonstratie breiriembreien. Ik had er ooit een gekocht op de IKnit-dag, maar was er nooit aan toegekomen om het eens serieus te proberen, maar dat gaat nu binnenkort gebeuren. Wie ook ‘aan de breiriem’ wil, kan een prachtig exemplaar bestellen bij Monique, die zo enthousiast is over deze lekker snelle en comfortabele breimethode, dat ze er een aantal geïmporteerd heeft naar Nederland. Je kan er eentje bij haar bestellen voor 50 euro. Met een vulling van echt paardenhaar en ambachtelijk gemaakt, zijn de zwart leren breiriemen ook nog ontzettend mooi. Nu maar hopen dat je snel jarig bent…

MoniqueB, who makes the beautiful lace shawls, gave me a private demonstration of knitting belt knitting. I bought one many years ago on IKnit day. I had never tried it before seriously, but I will now. If you want to try the knitting belt yourself, you can order one from Monique, who is so enthusiastic about this quick and comfortable knitting method that she imported a couple to The Netherlands. You can order one from her for 50 euros. Handcrafted and with a stuffing of horsehair, these black leather knitting belts are very beautiful as well. If only it’s your birthday soon….

Janet, de organisator van alweer deze 10e Handwerkbeurs, werd door de handelaren bedankt met een goed gevuld envelopje. Ze ondersteunt de handwerkwereld al jaren en verdient een leuk extraatje. En het meisje dat ijverig hielp met de Kika-actie breide ondertussen mooie olifantensokken voor haar. Precies op maat.

Janet, the organizer of this 10th Handwerkbeurs was thanked by the vendors with a nice envelope. She has been supporting the crafts world for many years now and deserves a nice perk. And the girl that helped so well with the Kika charity knitted a pair of nice elephant socks for Janet along the way. In exactly the right size.
