I love Amsterdam

Het is heerlijk om slechts 35 km van één van de leukste steden van de wereld te wonen, Amsterdam dus. Mits er niet te veel files zijn, ben ik er binnen een half uurtje. Dan nog wel even de auto parkeren…… Met rasechte Jordanesen als grootouders en een dito moeder die haar leven lang plat Amsterdams praatte ondanks dat ze me naar een dorp in het Gooi ontvoerde om te voorkomen dat ik een ‘bleekneusje’ zou worden, voel ik me helemaal thuis in Amsterdam. Zalig, die mooie grachten, historische panden, de gezelligheid en de rake Amsterdamse humor.
It’s only a 35 kilometer drive to one of the nicest cities in the world from where I live, Amsterdam. Unless there are a lot of traffic jams, I’m can be there in half an hour. Then try to park the car…… Thanks to my grandparents and mother that originated from the Jordaan I feel very at home in Amsterdam, even though my mother took me to live in a little town in the Gooi to avoid that I would grow up to be a ‘pale nose’ (not a clue how I should translate that). But I really love the canals, historical buildings, the friendly feeling of this city and the strange way to make jokes.
Daarom is het voor mij extra leuk er les te geven bij De Afstap. Op maar een minuutje lopen van de Dam vind je het schattige 17de eeuwse pandje aan de Oude Leliestraat (vlakbij het standbeeld van Multatuli op de brug over de Herengracht). Eigenlijk is dit de enige Amsterdamse wolwinkel die de moeite waard is. Het achter- en bovenhuis is volgepakt met voornamelijk Rowan-garens en Addi naalden (de populaire kantrondbreinaalden zijn er in verhouding tot wat je op het internet vindt heel voordelig geprijst). Ze hebben werkelijk alles van de uitgebreide Rowan-collectie, dus je grijpt zelden mis. De boekencollectie is ook flink uitgebreid, zodat er zelfs een nieuwe kast gemaakt moest worden. Eigenaresse Lonneke neemt mijn boekenadviezen zeer serieus dus er staan veel van de populaire Engelstalige breiboeken in het rek. Ik nam het boek van Kim Hargraves mee, Heartfelt – The Dark House Collection. Prachtige uitgevoerd en tjokvol breisels waar ik het liefst direct aan zou willen beginnen. Natuurlijk zijn ook alle Rowan-boeken op voorraad.
Dit jaar bestaat de zaak trouwens al 35 jaar. Reden tot het vieren van een feestje!
That is why it is extra special to teach in De Afstap. Only a minutes walk from the Dam you find the cute little shop build in the 17th century in the Oude Leliestraat (near the statue of Multatuli on the bridge over the Herengracht). Actually this is the only wool shop in Amsteram that is worth going to. The house behind the and the floors above the shop are stuffed with mainly Rowan yarns and Addi needles (the popular lace circulars are cheap compared to the prices found on the internet). They have litterary all items from the Rowan collection, so you rarely leave without the stuff you want. The collection of books is extended recently, so they even had to have a new bookcase made. Owner Lonneke takes my advises about which books to order serieusly so there are a lot of popular English knitting books on the shelfs. I bought the book of Kim Hargraves, Heartfeld – The Dark House Collection. Beautiful layed out and stuffed with knitwear that I would love to start knitting right away. Of course, also all Rowan books are on stock.
This year the shop is there for 35 years. Reason enough to have a party!
Afgelopen zondag gaven Hil en ik als The Dutch Knitters een workshop Twijnend Breien. Iedereen genoot van de gezellige dag, zowel de cursisten als de docenten. Lonneke kwam af en toe even kijken als ze ons hoorde lachen om de scherpe Amsterdamse humor van Liesbeth. Voor het eerst ook een man in ons midden, Andy uit de US die af en toe staand breide. We waren een beetje ongerust of hij het wel naar zijn zin had, maar zijn helemaal gerustgesteld sinds we zijn blog Andy in Amsterdam lazen. Ook waren er een paar cursisten die kennis hebben gemaakt met Twijnend Breien tijdens de Textiel Plus-Dag in Nieuwegein. Een van de dames kwam helemaal uit Zevenaar en verraste ons door ons pas aan het eind van de dag toe te vertrouwen dat ze al meer dan 40 jaar niet had gebreid. We konden het amper geloven, want ze breide pittig en volhardend door aan haar miniwantje. De meeste cursisten konden de wollige verleidingen van De Afstap niet weerstaan en gingen met tassen vol garens en boeken naar huis. Hil en ik gingen naar huis met een zeer tevreden gevoel en veel voldoening (én een tas vol spullen!), wat is het geven van breiworkshops toch heerlijk om te doen!
Last Sundy Hil and I as The Dutch Knitters gave a workshop Twined Knitting. Every enjoyed the day, the students as well as the teachers. Lonneke regularly came to see why we had to laugh so loud when Liesbeth made some real Amsterdam jokes. For the first time we had a man in our group, Andy for the US who now and then liked to knit standing up. We worried a bit about him as we thought he might not enjoy being among so many chatting women, but when we read his his blog Andy in Amsterdam we knew that that wasn’t neccessary. There were also some students that were introduced on Twined Knitting during the Textiel Plus-Day in Nieuwegein. One of the ladies came all the way from Zevenaar and surprised us at the end of the day with her announcement that she didn’t knit a stitch since more than 40 years. We could hardly believe that, as she knitted her mini mitten with perseverence and enthousiasm. Most of the students couldn’t resist the wooly temptations of De Afstap and left the shop with bags full of yarn and books. Hil and I went home with a very content feeling and a lot of satisfaction (ánd a bag with stuff!), it is such a joy to give these workshops!
Zaterdag waren man Jan en ik ook al in Amsterdam. We hadden een Royal High Tea aangeboden gekregen in het Amstel Hotel. Heerlijk was het; vijf soorten bijzondere thee, hartige en zoete hapjes en heerlijke sandwiches, de chocoladefontein, de prachtige serre boven de Amstel waar we relaxed luisterden naar een pianist en zangeres. Tot ik verveeld raakte van alle luxe en ik besloot dat je als gast in het Amstel moest kunnen doen waar je zin in hebt: breien!
Saturday my husband Jan and I were in Amsterdam too. A Royal High Tea was in the Amstel Hotel was offered to us. Delightful, five kind of special tea, snacks and sweets and delicious sandwiches, the chocolat fountain, the beautiful light room overlooking the Amstel canal where we listen very relaxed to a pianist and singer. Until I got bored and decided that as a guest of the Amstel you may do whatever you like: knitting!
