In de prachtige Kerkebuurt in Soest vind je iedere Hemelvaartsdag de Oude Ambachtenmarkt. En ieder jaar wordt het er wat drukker. Blijkbaar is men nog steeds geïnteresseerd in de ambachten van vroeger. En terecht. Mede dankzij deze evenementen blijven de oude technieken bewaard en bekend bij een groot publiek. Wie vernieuwend bezig wil zijn met textiele technieken, zal zich moeten realiseren dat de meeste technieken hun oorsprong hebben in het verleden. En wie wil er nu de traditionele Grolse wanten, de kralenbeursjes en de wit kanten mutsen vergeten?
Voor mij is de jaarlijkse wandeling over de markt een ware sentimental journey. Als oud-Soesterse ken ik ieder hoekje en gaatje van het oude centrum. Samen met man Jan maak ik een rondje langs de breisters die we kennen van andere jaren en gelegenheden. Vrolijk als altijd en van top tot teen in klederdracht gestoken vertellen ze bezoekers over hun ambachtelijke kunsten. Ik heb veel waardering voor de dames die vaak al wat op leeftijd zijn maar die pittig en daadkrachtig genoeg zijn om met hun handeltje op pad te gaan. Vrouwen naar mijn hart, want zelf vind ik het ook zo leuk om al breiend allerlei activiteiten in binnen- en buitenland te bezoeken.
Dit jaar was er een jonge vrouw die Tunisch haken nieuw leven inblies. Geduldig liet me mij haar handen fotograferen en filmen. Op twee plaatsen kon je echte Grolse Wanten kopen. Mevrouw Freriks mocht van mij haar warme jas wel aanhouden voor de foto. Zo’n combi van oud en nieuw vind ik juist leuk. Diverse dames sponnen wol op oude spinnenwielen met klompen aan. Klapstuk voor mij was mevrouw Abbink die zich gespecialiseerd heeft in prachtige oude katoenen mutsen voor poppen en op ware grootte. Ze breit ze het liefst na van echte oude mutsen. Dochters Anke en Connie dragen daar hun steentje aan bij door mutsen en poppensokjes te breien en de patronen te documenteren. Haar laatste project was een ingewikkelde muts met echt kantje erlangs. Geweldig dat moeder en dochters zich zo enthousiast inzetten voor het conserveren van deze traditionele breisels.
Na een lunch van krentenwegge met handgemaakte roomboter en verse karnemelk konden we er weer tegen. Deze zomer barst het weer van de leuke buitenevenementen zoals de Country Fair in Aalten, de Cream Tea in Kaatsheuvel bij Quilting Together en de Weversmarkt in Hoorn. En vergeet de grote boekenmarkten in Dordrecht en Deventer niet. We krijgen het nog druk……
In the scenic Kerkebuurt in Soest every year the Old Crafts market is held. And every year it is more crowded. Apparently the public is still interested in the old crafts. And that is a good thing. Thanks to events like this the old crafts stay preserved and known by a lot of people. When you want to be innovative, realise that most techniques have their origin in the past. And who want to forget the Groenlo mittens, the beaded purses and white lace bonnets?
For me the stroll over the market is a true sentimental journey. As I spent my childhood in Soest I know every corner of the old centre. Together with husband Jan I make my round along the knitters I know from last year or other events. Cheerful as always and dressed from top to toe in regional costume they tell the visitors about their arts and crafts. I have appreciation for the ladies, often not so young anymore, that have the guts and strength to take their merchandize and go to these events al over the country. I like that, as I also love it so much to go to all kind of knitting events in the Netherlands and abroad myself.
This year there was a young woman that had taken up Tunic Crochet. Patiently she let me photograph and film her hands. At two stands you could buy the real Groenlo mittens. Mrs Freriks kept her coat on while being photographed. I didn’t mind, as I like this combination of old and new. Several ladies spun wool on old spinning wheels keeping their wooden shoes on. Best of show for me was mrs Grevers. She specialized in beautiful old cotton bonnets for dolls and full scale. She prefers knitting with old bonnets as examples to using patterns. Daughter Anke helps by knitting bonnets and doll socks and documenting patterns. Her last project was a very complicated bonnet rimmed with real lace. It’s so great that mother and daughter make it their goal to preserve these traditional knits.
After a lunch of krentenwegge (bread with raisins) with handmade butter and fresh buttermilk we continued our way. This summer is stuffed with nice outside events like the Country Fair in Aalten, the Cream Tea in Kaatsheuvel organised by Quilting Together and the Weversmarkt in Hoorn. And don’t forget the big book markets in Dordrecht and Deventer. We will have a busy summer…..
