Estonia is in my heart…

 Estonia 2012

Sweden was fantastic and Norway just as nice, but Estonia, that unique country is very dear to me. This was the fourth time that I visited it and my love for this country keeps growing. But it was also tough, this journey that exceeded all previous journeys.

If you can survive a knitting trip with The Dutch Knitters you’re definitely not a wimp. Nine days, three different hotels, one apartment and eight pyjama parties further I’m back home again, a little dazed, exhausted and my head spinning from everything I experienced. We saw hundreds of mittens, gloves and socks, even in museum depots that are normally closed for the public. We saw the most beautiful costumes from several Northern countries, had a workshop from Kristi Joeste, met Aino Praakli and visited Anu Raud at home. There I bought a pair of gloves knitted by Kristi Joeste. Mine are even in the book Ornamented Journey (yes, the original ones!). After that Anu herself accompanied us to the Heimtali Museum where we were offered a lunch with homemade preserve, Kama (a traditional Estonian corn dish with buttermilk) and tomatoes from her own garden. The conference was fantastic, especially the diner where Anke stole the show in her Guelders costume and her wooden shoes and where the rest us of appeared in Dutch aprons that we designed ourselves.

And these were only snatches of what we took part in! How will I ever get to tell you everything? Just consider I made approximately 4500 photos. One super-duper activity after the other, it never seemed to end. Until yesterday, when we boarded the plane to The Netherlands again, tired but very contented. Fortunately there are already plans for a next journey… Thank you so much, dear Monika,  for also this time helping me organizing this knitting trip. You are marvellous!

This poem we all made together in the train from Viljandi to Tallinn, while having a nice glass of bubbles:

(And the girl fed the chickens while her thoughts were wandering in their own direction)

Mogen we volgend jaar weer terugkomen?

Nine ladies from Holland,
went on a knitting trip to Estonia.
They bought loads of books and knitting stuff,
and were chatting all day long Carla shot a picture of every single instant
Especially Corry thought that to be only so-so
This elderly lady kept saying: “Ho-ho…”
It’s always the same with these seniors
They can’t hear you properly

And that with a couple of freaks
Drinking glasses of Jacobs Creek,
and so the woods glide by,
while she says: “Be quiet, I’m knitting.”

Lots of Kasitöö, cheese and wine.
That’s how a knitting trip to Estonia should be like!
From Tallinn, via Tartu and Setomaa,
a warm welcome at Anu
While knitting, we travel back to Tallinn!

Ja tüdruk söötis kanu
Ning mõtted rändasid oma radu.
(And the girl fed the chickens while her thoughts were wandering in their own direction)

Loud and busy as the Dutch are
Sitting happily together,

they knit till their fingers are sore.

Without Monika we could only have dreamt about it…
May we please come back next year?
