If you love knitting ánd books, you have a problem…..
Especially since we can order anything on the internet our heart desires. That heart jumped up yesterday, when I saw the book
One Stitch Below written by Elise Duvekot. Nancy Marchant, you all know as the Queen of Brioche, brought it as a present from Elise for me from the US where she was last week, teaching on Stitches East. I was delighted to see a book with a focus on a special technique. In this case it is the Fisherman’s rib, a simplified form of the Brioche Stitch, for which you have to knit a stitch below. Clear explanations and lots of images teach the reader step by step the details of the technique. Most models are not too complicated, but the forms of the garments are logical and consist mostly of straight lines, which makes them excellent projects for knitters with some experience to more advanced knitters. Especially the socks are nice! The book isn’t on sale here yet, but on Stitches East the 1000 books were sold quickly. Congratulations Elise, with this wonderful book! You did a great job writing this book and designing the patterns and can be proud of the result!

A book that isn’t available yet, is the book of Nancy Marchant that is dedicated to the Brioche Stitch. Nancy is still working on it. Perfectionist to the bone and designer with an eye for detail, pattern and functionality in combination with form, Nancy will surely be able to make this book a bestseller in the knitting world. I already saw some samples and examples and I’m quite impressed. Elise Duvekot and Nancy Marchant are both from the US but live in the Netherlands. Isn’t it great that we have these two famous knitters here in our small country?

Another very special knitters, also called Nancy, is Nancy Bush. We all know her for her excellent sock books for which she often found her inspiration in pattern books from the past. She also brought the old Estonian techniques to our attention and made them suitable for a large group of knitters. This country offers knitters a treasure of exceptional knittings. Traditional patterns for mittens and socks, special borders and little cables and foremost lots of lace patterns. One of my favourite books, Pitsilised Koekirjad, is stuffed with them. My fascination for knittings from Estland started with this book years ago and ever since I’m smitten about Estonian knitting techniques and patterns. With Nancy Bush’s book Knitting in Estonia, where the emphasize is on mittens, gloves and socks from vintage sources, this only got worse. With Knitted Lace from Estonia she makes knitting the lace patterns that originate from century old sources and are incorporated in Haapsalu shawls and other lace possible for knitters all over the world. The book contains explanation about traditional stitches like nupps and gathered stitches, fourteen patterns for gorgeous shawls and a collection of lace patterns and borders gathered from Triinu, Pitsilised Koekirjad and other sources. Like me, Nancy combines patterns with a historical background so a chapter on the history of Estonian knitting is included. Most of the merchants on internet are already sold out, but De Afstap in Amsterdam still has a big pile on stock. Be quick, as this jewel among knitting books is running out quickly and is destined to be a collector’s item. And you want the book some day soon anyway….. 😉

My Estonian knitting mate Signe helps me to get more wonderful knitting books that recently came out. They represent the wealth of traditional knitting art this country stands for. Eesti Kindakirjad written by Elo Lutspp and Irina Tammis contains patterns from traditional mittens and socks. Sokiraamat written by Virve Avik is loaded with patterns for socks. And last but not least I received a true pearl. The image of Kihnu Roosi, a cute old lady with Estonian costume and headscarf and knitting in her hands, is on the cover. She can knit! The patterns of vintage mittens and gloves are made into clear stitch patterns that will make lots of knitters very happy. So forget that you don’t speak the Estonian language, as the patterns can be knitted easily by advanced knitters. And if you don’t succeed, then become member of Knitting in Estonia, a Yahoo community in which knitters help each other during their exploration of the Estonian knitting world.
