Misti Alpaca Lace (gekocht bij De Afstap) is geweldig om mee te breien, vooral als het garen babyblauw is geverfd. Linda Elgas‘ boek over Estlandse Haapsalu shawls staat vol patronen voor traditionele vierkante shawls. Ik koos er een met een luchtig open gewerkt middendeel en mooie randen. De alpaca glijdt door mijn handen en laat zich zo heerlijk breien op de Addi kantrondbreinaalden. Ondanks de naalddikte van 2,25 mm schiet het werk dus best snel op.
Misti Alpaca Lace i(bought at De Afstap) is a delight to knit with, especially when it is dyed baby blue. Linda Elgas‘ book about Estionian Haapsalu shawls is stuffed with patterns for traditional square shawls. I choose one with an airy and open middle part and beautiful borders. The alpaca slides through your hands and can be knit so nicely on the Addi lace needles. Despite the small needles (2,25 mm) the work comes along nicely.
Een paar jaar geleden startte ik rond deze tijd van het jaar een al even babyblauwe shawl, gehaakt in dat geval. De angora voelde aangenaam aan maar de pluisjes waren niet handig in combi met mijn contactlenzen. Toch hielp het werk me door een moeilijke decembermaand heen. Sindsdien is het de lievelingsshawl van Dana, onze witte poes. Ook haar hielp de shawl door moeilijke tijden en ze geniet nog steeds van de koesterende warmte en beschutting die de shawl haar biedt als ze lekker bij een van ons op schoot of met haar kontje op de verwarming zit.
A few years ago, around this time of the year, I also started a babyblue shawl, crocheted in this case. The angora felt comfortable, but the fluffy stuff were not a success in combination with my contacts. But the work kept me going during a very difficult month of December. Since that time it is the favorite shawl of Dana, our white cat. It helped her too through difficult periods and she still enjoys the nice warmth and protection the shawl offers her sitting on our laps or on the central heating.
Regia Silk heb je ook in een prachtige babyblauwe tint. Ik had het toevallig voorhanden toen ik in een breiboekje uit 1966 de ideale traditionele hielflap tegen kwam. Dat moest natuurlijk uitgeprobeerd worden. Conclusie: dankzij een betere manier van steken opnemen en de oudewetse hefsteek kan je een perfecte hiel zonder gaatjes aan de zijkant breien. Daarbij was de methode van verdraaid opnemen en een steekje ertussen frutten kinderspel.
Regia Silk is also made in a baby blue colour. I had it on hand when I discovered the perfect heel in a knitting book published in 1966. That had to be tested right away. Conclusion: thanks to a better way to pick up stitces and the oldfashioned ‘hefsteek’ (can’t be translated) you can knit a perfect heel without holes on the sides. Compared to the method of picking up stitches and knitting them twisted and stuffing the hole with an extra stitch which now seem to be an inferior method, this is the real thing!
Niet baby maar indigo blauw zijn mijn nieuwe Aran Slippers uit Interweave Knits Holiday Issue 2008. Ze zijn gebreid van met echte indigo geverfde katoen van Rowan dat zo’n 10% krimpt bij het wassen. Daar moet je dus rekening mee houden met breien, anders passen ze niet. Het breien kleurt je handen blauw. Net als spijkerstof slijt de kleur er vanzelf uit, wat het alleen maar mooier maakt. Net als je oudste en lekkerste spijkerbroek die alleen maar lekkerder wordt in de loop der jaren.
My new Aran Slippers from Interweave Knits Holiday Issue 2008 are not baby blue, but indigo blue. They are knitted from Rowan cotton dyed with real indigo that shrinks about 10% at the first washing. You should keep that in mind while knitting, or else your slippers won’t fit. The knitting colours your hands blue. Just as with jeans fabric the colour wears out, which makes the fabric better over time. Like your oldest and best pair of jeans that grow on you during years of wearing them.
Een ander (deels) babyblauw project is het schilderen van ons huis. De gevels zijn voorzien van roomgeel stucwerk met babyblauwe plinten. Ik klus graag en omdat ik toch overal wel bij kom met huishoudtrap, telescooproller en wat inventiviteit besloot ik niet mee te doen aan het prijzige gemeenschappelijke project. Dat levert me zo’n duizend euro op voor een paar middagjes werk en dat is best veel stash. Door met de kozijnen en deuren ook zelf onder handen te nemen verdien ik er nog een lekkere vakantie bij! Estland? Zweden? Italië? Of toch maar weer New York?
Another (partly) baby blue project is the painting of our house. The plastering of the fronts are painted creamy yellow with baby blue baseboards. I like DIY and as I can reach everything with my stepladder, telescoopbrushes and some inventivity I decided not to join the pricy communal project. The saves my about thousand euros for only a few afternoons of work and that is quite some stash. By also doing the window frames and doors I earn another holiday! Estonia? Sweden? Italy? Or maybe another trip to New York?
Maar het mooiste blauw dat wij in huis hebben, is het blauw van de ogen van onze vijf siamezen…….
But the most beautiful blue we got in our house is the blue of the eyes of our five siamese cats…….
