Voor the Queen of Brioche Nancy Marchant is er veel gebeurd sinds ze ooit de derde prijs in een haakwedstrijd won en het uitkomen van haar boek Knitting Brioche. Tijdens een uitgebreide presentatie in het ABC Treehouse vertelde ze over het verloop van haar kreatieve carrière en hoe dit haar bracht tot het schrijven van het ultieme boek over de de Patentsteek. Gekleed in het diepzwart en haar geliefde grijze-beige vestje hield ze met trots de beroemde Delfts Blauwe Tegeltjes-trui uit de Ariadne op. Het paste perfect in het tijdsbeeld van de jaren tachtig, maar ik prefereer de kunstwerkjes die ze met de Patentsteek van haar naalden laat rollen.
A lot happened for the Queen of Brioche Nancy Marchant since she once won the third price in a crochet contest up until the release of her book Knitting Brioche. During an extensive presentation in the ABC Treehouse she told about the development of her creative career and how this got her to write the ultimate Brioche Stitch book. Dressed in deep black and her favourite grey-beige cardigan she proudly showed her famous Delft Blue Tiles cardigan from the Dutch magazine Ariadne. It fitted perfectly in the character of the eighties, but I prefer the works of art she lets roll of her needles with the Brioche stitch.
Wie een intrinsieke motivatie heeft tot het creëren van mooie dingen, blijft dat doen ondanks een fulltime baan en het opvoeden van kinderen. In de uitgebalanceerde ontwerpen van Nancy proef je die motivatie. De belijning, het kleurgebruik en de materiaalkeuze, alles is in stijlvol en van hoge kwaliteit. Voeg daar draagbaarheid en wat technische hoogstandjes aan toe en je hebt de ideale uitdaging voor de gevorderde breier. Maar het is slechts de voedingsbodem voor eigen experimenten. ‘Maak er je eigen ding van’, is de boodschap die Nancy uitdraagt en waar ze het meest van geniet als ze de breisels van de bezoekers bekijkt.
Anyone with an intrinsic motivation to create beautiful things will continue doing this despite a fulltime job and raising her kids. In Nancy’s balanced designs you can feel that motivation. The lines, the use of colour and materials, everything is stylish and of a high quality. Add wearability and some technical tours the force and you have the ultimate challenge for the experienced knitter. But it is merely the soil for you own experiments. ‘Make your own designs with it’, is the message Nancy propagates and which she enjoys most when looking at visitors’ knitting.
En hoe kan je de autheur van Knitting Brioche beter eren dan met bloemen van haar eigen patroontje Herfstavond Cuffs? De bloemist vond het een uitdaging en samen zochten we bijpassende bloemen bij de breisels op stokjes die ik eerder deze week maakten. Coquette en Antie waren zeer geïnteresseerd in de echte én in de wolbloemen en een oudere dame in de trein naar Amsterdam verbaasde zich over de exotische bloemen in het uitbundige boeket. Jans kon het niet laten iedere bezoeker van de Afstap het bijzondere ruikertje te laten zien.
And how can the author of Knitting Brioche be honoured more than with some knitted flowers based on her own pattern Herfstavond Cuffs? The florist considered it an experiment and together we selected the right flowers for the knitted flowers on sticks I made earlier this week. Coquette and Antie were very interested in the real and the wool flowers and an elderly lady in the train to Amsterdam was amazed at the exotic flowers in the exuberant bouquet. Jans could not stop showing all the customers at De Afstap this very special bouquet.
Vrijwel alle bezoekers hadden interessant breiwerk bij zich of aan. Cassandra voelde zich een foot model met haar voortdurend gefotografeerde kousen en Dominique biechtte op dat het prachtige vest dat ze droeg eigenlijk hier een daar nog een stukje I-cord miste. Nancy was blij en een tikje in de bonen en schreef Happy Birthday in plaats van Happy Brioching in haar boek, maar dat vond Dominique alleen maar heel speciaal. Geen tweede gesigneerd boek zoals het hare!
Nearly all the visitors brought some interesting knitting with them or were wearing it. Cassandra felt like a fashion model with her constantly photographed stockings and Dominique confessed wearing a cardigan that missed a piece of I-cord in some places. Nancy was very happy and a bit confused when she wrote Happy Birthday instead of Happy Brioching in her book, but Dominique just considered this to be very special. No signed book like hers!
Nancy had haar enorme koffer vol oude en nieuwe projecten en proefjes meegebracht. De werkstukken getuigen van de vele talenten van Nancy, die zich zowel uiten in figuratieve geintjes als in stijlvol op Shibora (Japanse tie-dy kunst) geënte technieken. Na het bewonderen van alle moois sloot Nancy haar presentatie af met een zalige cliffhanger…… en nú door met mijn tweede boek!
Nancy brought a suitcase filled with old and new projects and samples. The projects show Nancy’s many talents, expressed in figurative jokes as well as in stylish Shibora (Japanese tie-dy art) inspired techniques. After having shown all these beautiful items Nancy concluded with a wonderful cliffhanger…. and now on to my second book!
