Life 'n Knitting

Begin februari waren we weer in België, in Eeklo, een stadje waarvan ik voorheen nog nooit had gehoord. Maar in de bibliotheek werd door Martine Vermeire Bezig Beestig georganiseerd en dat maakte de reis meer dan waard. In de veranda, een mooie lichte ruimte achter de bibiliotheek, waar normaal gesproken de oudere heren uit de stad de ochtendkrant lezen, richtten we samen met onze Belgische breivriendin Yarnlot (Marie-Paule) een gezellig Dutch Knitting Café in. De serieuze spinner, die ook zijn intrek nam in de veranda, trok zich niets aan van het gebrei en gebep en spon vlijtig door, zelfs toen rond het middaguur Janny met de harde kern uit de Koewachtse breiwereld binnen kwam. Janny dook in de door Christine van Stoffenidee meegebrachte Rowan-boeken, want binnenkort gaat ze haar wolwinkeltje in Koewacht verrijken met deze prachtige garens en patronenboeken.

At the beginning of February we were again in Belgium, in Eeklo, a small town I had never heard of before. But in the library Bezig Beestig was organised by Martine Vermeire and that made the trip more than worthwhile. In the conservatory, a nice light space situated at the back of the library, where normally the elderly men from the town read their morning papers, we set up a nice Dutch Knitting Café together with our Belgian knitting friend Yarnlot (Marie-Paule) The serious spinner, who took his place in the conservatory as well, did not get distracted by all the knitting and chatting and spun diligently, even when Janny and the hard core of the Koewacht knitting scene came in. Janny huddled over the Rowan books brought by Christine of Stoffenidee for she will soon be enriching her yarn shop in Koewacht with these lovely yarns and pattern books.

De organisator van het hele spektakel, Martine Vermeire, heeft meer talenten dan alleen het perfect organiseren van leuke activiteiten. Blijkbaar kan ze ook goed koken. Ze schreef samen met een vriendin een boek over de Gentse keuken in al haar facetten. Niet alleen de traditioneel Belgische recepten staan erin, maar ook dat wat de immigranten in de loop der tijd meebrachten aan lekkers. De bezige Belgische dame deed ons ter afscheid nog een schattig schaapje cadeau. En na veel gezoek naar een geschikt wegrestautant sloten wij ons Belgische reisje af met een ouderwets bezoek aan de Mac Drive…..

The organizer of the entire spectacle, Martine Vermeire, has more talents than just perfectly organising nice activities. Apparently she’s also a good cook. Together with a friend she wrote a book about the Ghent kitchen in all its aspects. Not only the traditional Belgian recipes are in this book but also what delicacies the immigrants brought throughout the years. This busy Belgian lady gave us a cute little sheep as a farewell gift. And after an extensive search for a suitable wayside restaurant we concluded our trip to Belgium with an old-fashioned visit to the Mc Drive…….
