A History of Hand Knitting – part I
Richard Rutt, de bischop van Leicester, was als jongetje al geïntrigeerd door de techniek en de historie van het breien. Dat leidde tot een standaardwerk over de geschiedenis van breien, waarvan de eerste editie in 1987 het levenslicht zag. A History of Hand Knitting is een naslagwerk dat verplichte kost is voor iedere fanatieke en zichzelf respecterende breier. Daarnaast heeft Rutt, verzamelaar van oude breiboekjes, zijn collectie in een archief op internet gratis toegankelijk gemaakt voor een ieder die er ze wil inzien of downloaden.
Rutt start zijn boek met hoofdstukken over de essentie van de techniek van het breien. Maar daarna rijst al snel de vraag: hoe oud is breien nu eigenlijk? Rutt deed hier uitgebreid onderzoek naar en kwam met opmerkelijke conclusies, die wel eens veel dichter bij huis kunnen liggen dan je denkt. Enige tijd geleden trad ik in de voetsporen van Rutt en ging zelf op onderzoek uit. Een heel bijzonder en best wel spannend avontuur, dat ik binnenkort graag met je wil delen, houdt Life ‘n Knitting goed in de gaten!
Rutt stierf op 85-jarige leeftijd op 27 juli 2011.
Richard Rutt, the Bishop of Leicester, was as a young boy intrigued by the art and the history of knitting. That led to a standard work on the history of knitting, which first edition was published in 1987. A History of Hand Knitting is a reference book that is a must for any self-respecting and avid knitter. In addition, Rutt, collector of old knitting books, made his collection publicly available in an archive on the Internet for anyone who wants to read or download them.
Rutt starts his book with chapters on the essence of the technique of knitting. But then quickly arises the question: how old is knitting anyway? Rutt did extensive research on this subject and came up with remarkeble claims, which, for the people living in the Netherlands, may well be much closer to home than you expect. Some time ago I followed in the footsteps of Rutt and did some research myself. Rutt died at the age of 85 on July 27 2011.

I just want to add that Mr. Rutt’s theories and judgements are doubtable and they are doubted by many experts
not everything in “his” history is true
