Soorten motten

• De bruine huismot komt veel voor in Nederland. Je kunt bruine huismotten herkennen aan hun bruine vleugels met zwarte stippen. De larven zijn beige van kleur en hebben een roodbruine kop. Ze eten zaden en graan, maar ook papier, wol, linnen, leder en dode insecten. Ze houden van warmte en komen het meest voor in de zomer. De motten verpulveren tot bruinig stof als je ze mept.
• De kleermot heeft lichtbruine, zelfs bijna goudkleurige, vleugels. Ze kunnen één cm lang worden. De larven zijn wit en hebben een bruine kop. Kleermotten komen niet in de vrije natuur voor, maar wel in woningen. De  larven eten wol, katoen, linnen, zijde, haar, leer en veren. Van wol alleen kunnen ze niet leven. Synthetische stoffen eten ze niet. Het komt ook voor dat ze bij gebrek aan beter de voedselresten op kleding eten of zich op dode insecten storten. Kleermotten en hun larven komen vooral in de zomermaanden voor.

Hoe weet je of er motten in je huis aanwezig zijn?

• Je ziet kleine gaatjes in je wollen, linnen of zijden kleding of in bont of opgezette dieren.
• Je vindt kleine witte eitjes en witte larven in je kleding.
• Je kleding is verkleurd of ruikt muf.
• In je kast of op je kleding zie je allerlei dunne spinsels. Die zijn gemaakt door de larven die uit de kledingstukken zijn gekropen om te gaan verpoppen.
• Er komen motten uit de kledingkast vliegen of je ziet ze tegen de achterwand zitten.

Hoe kan je motten weren of verdelgen?

• Alle (tweedehands)kleding, garens, dekbedden en bont die je het huis inbrengt, gaat eerst een paar nachtjes de vriezer in om motten en eitjes te doden.
• Vriest het ‘s nachts buiten? Doe dan alle wollen stoffen in plastic zakken of dozen een paar nachtjes of etmalen op het balkon of in de tuin.
• Laat je kleding af en toe lekker luchten in het zonnetje, maar haal alles voor de avond weer naar binnen om te voorkomen dat er motten van buiten in belanden.
• Motten kunnen een wasbeurt lager dan 48 graden C. overleven, dus was je kleding op hogere temperaturen als de stof daar tegen kan. Ook chemisch reinigen doodt motten en eitjes.
• Motten houden van vieze kleding die naar zweet en huidvet ruikt. Was kleding regelmatig.
• Aan het eind van het winterseizoen haal je alle wollen items uit de kast, goed uitschudden, kast een sopje geven, stofzuigen en zo nodig kleding gewassen er weer in.
• Motten zijn gekker op oude huizen dan op nieuwbouw. Zorg dat je alle kieren en spleten dicht. Huizen in steden lijken meer last te hebben van motten, mogelijk omdat er dichter op elkaar wordt gebouwd. Hoge luchtvochtigheid, warmte en donkere ruimten trekken motten aan.
• Bewaar je dierbare wollen items in afgesloten plastic boxen en/of afgesloten plastic zakken, bv ziplocks. Leg oude kranten onder en op de stapeltjes textiel. Prop de kledingkasten niet te vol.
• Vouw truien en vesten zo dat het rugpand buiten komt, dan is de kans groter dat de mottengaatjes aan de achterkant komen als er toch een mot langs komt, dat is beter dan aan de voorkant.
• Sluit alle verpakkingen van voedsel (meel, graan, zaden ed) goed af.
• Goed stofzuigen (ook in de hoekjes en onder en in kasten!) verwijdert motten en motteneitjes.
• Gebruik de haardroger op de warmste stand om kieren en andere lastige plaatsen te ontdoen van motten, larven en eitjes.
• Plaats horren in de open ramen.
• Bromvliegen en vliegen zijn een teken dat er mogelijk een mottenplaag op komst is. Kijk waar ze op af komen, ruim dat op en houdt de mottenstand daarna goed in de gaten.
• Ten einde raad? Dan maar het hele huis goed sprayen met een spuitbus gif tegen vliegende insecten, bv Roxasect. Doe dat nèt voor je een dagje weg gaat of voor je op vakantie gaat.
• Plaats mottenvallen (doosje met lijmlaag en geurstoffen die motten aantrekken), deze geven ook een beeld van het aantal motten dat er in huis woont. Of schaf een executielamp aan (lamp die motten aantrekt, waarna ze worden geëlektrocuteerd. Pas op met oude mottenballen, daar kunnen giftige stoffen inzitten die ongezond zijn voor mens en dier. Ook moderne mottenballen stinken flink!
• En als het echt te bont wordt, schakel de ongediertebestrijding in!
• Mottengaatjes kunnen vaak onzichtbaar (of zichtbaar als decoratie) worden gerepareerd. Of laat het doen door De Afstap in Amsterdam.
• Er zijn veel geuren die motten weren:
  • Lavendel
  • Cederhout (na een jaar licht opschuren en extra cederhoutolie erop
  • Zeepjes met sterke geuren
  • Etherische oliën
  • Krantenpapier (motten hebben een hekel aan de geur van de inkt)
  • Laurierblaadjes
  • Kruidnagels

Types of moths

• The brown house moth is common in the Netherlands. You can recognize brown house moths by their brown wings with black dots. The larvae are beige in color and have a red-brown head. They eat seeds and grain, but also paper, wool, linen, leather and dead insects. They love warmth and are most common in the summer. The moth pulverises into brownish dust when you slap them.
• The moth has light brown, almost gold colored wings. They can become one cm long. The larvae are white and have a brown head. Clothes moths are not found in the wild, but in homes. The larvae eat wool, cotton, linen, silk, hair, leather and feathers. They cannot live on wool alone. They do not eat synthetic fabrics. It also happens that, in the absence of better food, they eat food residues on clothing or throw themselves on dead insects. Clothes moths and their larvae mainly occur in the summer months.

How do you know if there are moths in your house?

• You see small holes in your woolen, linen or silk clothing or in fur or stuffed animals.
• You will find small white eggs and white larvae in your clothing.
• Your clothing is discolored or smells musty.
• You can see all kinds of thin spins in your closet or on your clothes. They are made by the larvae that have crawled out of the garments to pupate.
• Moths fly out of the wardrobe or you can see them sitting against the back wall.

What can you keep out moths / kill?

• All (second-hand) clothes, yarns, comforters and fur that you bring into the house first go into the freezer for a few nights to kill moths and eggs.
• Is it freezing outside at night? Then put all woolen fabrics in plastic bags or boxes for a few nights or days on the balcony or in the garden.
• Let your clothes air in the sun every now and then, but bring everything back in for the evening to prevent moths from outside to get into your textiles.
• Moths can survive a wash below 48 degrees C., so wash clothing at higher temperatures if the fabric can withstand it. Dry cleaning also kills moths and eggs.
• Moths like dirty clothes that smell of sweat and skin fat. Wash clothing regularly.
• At the end of the winter season you remove all woolen items from the cupboard, shake well, give the cupboard soapy water, vacuum clean and, if necessary, wash clothes again.
• Moths are more font of old houses than on newly build houses. Make sure you close all cracks. Houses in cities seem to suffer more from moths, possibly because they are being built closer together. High humidity, warmth and dark spaces attract moths.
• Keep your precious woolen items in sealed plastic boxes and / or sealed plastic bags, eg ziplocks. Place old newspapers under and on the stacks of textiles. Don’t stuff the wardrobes too full.
• Fold sweaters and cardigans so that the back piece will be on the outside, then the chance is bigger that the moth holes will be at the back if a moth comes along, which you might prefere to having them at the front.
• Seal all food packages (flour, grain, seeds, etc.) well.
• Vacuum well (also in the corners and under and in cupboards!) This removed moths and moth eggs.
• Use the hair dryer on the hottest setting to remove cracks, larvae and eggs from cracks and other awkward places.
• Place screens in the open windows.
• Bluebottles and flies are a sign that there may be a moth infestation. Look at what they are heading for, clean it up and then be aware of moths invastations.
• Desperate? Then spray the whole house well with a spray of poison against flying insects, eg Roxasect. Do that just before you go away for a day or before you go on vacation.
• Place moth traps (box with glue layer and fragrances that attract moths), these also give a picture of the number of moths living in the house. Or purchase an execution lamp (lamp that attracts moths, after which they are electrocuted. Be careful with old mothballs, because they can contain toxic substances that are unhealthy for humans and animals. Modern mothballs also smell bad!
• And if it really gets too furry, call in pest control!
• Moth holes can often be repaired invisible (or visible as decoration). Or let De Afstap in Amsterdam do it.
• There are many scents that keep moths away:
  • Lavender
  • Cedar wood (lightly sand after a year and add extra cedar wood oil)
  • Soaps with strong scents
  • Essential oils
  • Newspaper (moths hate the smell of the ink)
  • Bay leaves
  • Cloves

Je zou toch eens zomaar de hele wintermaand november in Estland mogen zijn. Veel bijzonderder dan in de zomer, als toeristen de stad en het land overspoelen als ieder andere toeristische trekpleister. Ik prefereer de rust en het intiemere karakter van november. Ons heerlijk ruime appartement aan het Vabaduse Väljak (vrijheidsplein) op de 6e verdieping in het gebouw van de Kunstihoone (Kunstacademie) had een grandioos mooi uitzicht over de stad, kerktorens, de Russische kerk in de bovenstad, oeroude stadsmuren en -torens en zelfs de zee in de verte. De ideale uitvalsbasis voor mijn avonturen in Tallinn en uitstapjes naar Haapsalu, Helsinki en Tartu. En om de hoek van de opera, wat wil je nog meer?

It is pure bliss that we can spend the entire winter month November in Estonia. Much more special than in the summer, when tourists flood the city and the country like any other tourist attraction. I prefer the tranquility and more intimate nature of November. Our wonderfully spacious apartment on the Vabaduse Väljak (freedom square) on the 6th floor in the building of the Kunstihoone (Art Academy) had a magnificent view of the city, church towers, the Russian church in the upper city, ancient city walls and towers and even the sea in the distance. The ideal base for my adventures in Tallinn and trips to Haapsalu, Helsinki and Tartu. And around the corner from the opera, what more do you want?

Na een rustige eerste week, waarin ik naar twee openingen van tentoonstellingen (tapijten van Mariann Kallas en The Weather Diaries), een kattenshow met Monika en een concert ging, startte Mardilaat. Dit is het feest van Sint Maarten, de naamheilige van mijn vader, dat onder meer wordt gevierd met een gezellige handwerkbeurs in de Saku Suurhall. Het was al mijn vijfde keer op de beurs, maar ik geniet er nog altijd volop van, alleen het leuke sfeertje en alle workshops al, en je koopt er altijd wel iets. Maar daarover later meer….
En we mochten ons sterretje bijdragen aan wereld’s grootste himmeli (strokunstwerk).Ook mochten Jan en ik aanwezig zijn bij de conferentie van de Noord-Europese handwerkorganisatie. Erg interessant en fijn om gelijkgestemde textielliefhebbers uit allerlei landen uit Noord-Europa te ontmoeten. Dank aan Liis en Liina van de Estonian Craft Union!

I had a quiet first week, I went to two openings of exhibitions (carpets from Mariann Kallas and The Weather Diaries ), a cat show with Monika and a concert. Then Mardilat started. This is the feast of Sint Maarten, the name saint of my father, which is celebrated with a cozy handicraft fair in the Saku Suurhall, among other events. It was already my fifth time at the fair, but I still enjoy it to the full, I love the nice atmosphere and all the workshops, and you always buy something. But I will tell about that later on,….
We were allowed to make some stars for world’s biggest himmeli (straw artwork). Jan and I were also allowed to be present at the conference of the Northern European handicraft organization. Very interesting and nice to meet like-minded textile lovers from all over Northern Europe. Thanks to Liis and Liina of the Estonian Craft Union!

Jan startte met het schilderen van een icoon, dit keer een heel bijzondere, want Sylvia Kristel, de beroemde Nederlandse actrice, wie kent haar niet,… werd afgebeeld als Maria Magdalena. In de afbeelding zijn meerdere Magische Motieven verborgen. Het schilderen van een icoon is vele uren werk, dus Jan werkt ook nu nog in de weekeinden door aan de icoon.

Jan started painting an icon, this time a very special one, because Sylvia Kristel , the famous Dutch actress, who doesn’t know her, … was depicted as Mary Magdalene . Several Magic Motifs are hidden in the image. Painting an icon is many hours of work, so Jan is still working on the icon on weekends.

Zelf mocht ik ook nog even aan de slag, bij de Estonian Craft Union gaf ik tijdens het 3D-festival een workshop over Magische Motieven voor een groep overenthousiaste leerlingen die nu ook allemaal verslaafd zijn aan de Motieven.

I was allowed to do something myself too, during the 3D festival organised by the Estonian Craft Union I gave a class on Magic Motifs for some very enthusiastic participants who are now also hooked on the Motifs.

Ik heb me gestort op het verbinden van mijn Magische Motieven met Estlandse breitechnieken. Zo verwerkte ik motieven in Roositud (borduurwerk in combinatie met breiwerk), Haapsalu kant en de traditionele sokken en kousen van Kihnu. Op dit moment is een deel van mijn werk nog onder embargo in verband met mogelijke latere publicatie, maar hier alvast een voorproefje.

I have focused on connecting my Magic Motifs with Estonian knitting techniques. For example, I processed motifs in Roositud (embroidery in combination with knitwear), Haapsalu lace and the traditional socks and stockings from Kihnu. At the moment, part of my work is still under embargo in connection with possible later publication, but you can find a preview here.

We gingen naar Helsinki en het ERM in Tartu (museumbezoek en onderzoek breiwerk), opera, concerten, tango, Alice in Wonderland, de Nationale Bibiotheek, Haapsalu, het Openlucht museum, stadsmuseum en het Designmuseum, we maakten sieraden bij goudsmid Allar en natuurlijk gingen we ook gezellig naar de kerstmarkt. In de opera spotte ik tig Haapsalu shawls en in het ERM zag ik het oudste stukje Estland’s breiwerk. Ik vierde met de breiers van het Lace Center (inclusief Linda Elgas!) in Haapsalu het 10-jarig jubileum en haakte een ster voor hun kerstboom. Mist, storm, zon en een pietsie sneeuw. Gerookte vis, Muhu brood, chocolade fudge, Vana Tallinn, warme kruidenwijn en veel taartjes, het is een wonder dat ik geen grammetje ben aangekomen. We hebben gewerkt en vooral enorm genoten van de Estlandse cultuur.
Ik heb superveel beleefd, ervaren en gedaan, maar uiteindelijk kan ik ook breien thuis op mijn eigen bank. Echter,… écht geïnspireerd raken, dat doe je door te reizen en ervaringen op te doen, ter plekke, waar je de rokerige Estlandse geuren ruikt, de cultuur ervaart en de mensen van het land ontmoet.

We went to Helsinki and the ERM in Tartu (visit to the museum and knitwear research), opera, concerts, tango, Alice in Wonderland, the National Library, Haapsalu, the Open Air museum, the city museum and the Design museum, we maked jewellery at the workshop of goldsmith Allar and of course also we enjoyed the Christmas market. In the opera I spotted so many beautiful Haapsalu shawls and in the ERM I saw the oldest piece of Estonian knitwear. I celebrated 10 years Lace Center with the knitters (including Linda Elgas!) in Haapsalu and contributed a crochet star for the Christmas tree. Mist, storm, sun and a little bit of snow. Smoked fish, Muhu bread, chocolate fudge, Vana Tallinn, glühwein and lots of pies, it is a miracle that I didnt gain any weight… We have worked and foremost enjoyed the Estonian culture.
I have done and experienced a lot, but in the end, I can also knit at home on my own couch. The power of being in a different culture and get new inspiration you do by traveling and gaining experiences, on the spot, where you can smell the smoky Estonian scents, experience the culture and meet the people of the country.
