Life 'n Knitting

In november woon en werk ik als Artist in Residence in Tallinn, Estland. Ik ga er onderzoeken hoe de principes van Magische Motieven toepasbaar zijn op allerlei traditionele Estlandse technieken. En natuurlijk genieten van de bijzondere Estlandse cultuur, ballet, concerten en opera’s, Muhu-brood, taartjes van Pierre, Vana Tallinn, Monika’s jammetjes en het gezelschap van mijn Estlandse vrienden.

In November will I live and work as Artist in Residence in Tallinn, Estonia. I will research how the principles of Magic Motifs can be applied to all kinds of traditional Estonian techniques. And of course enjoy the Estonian culture, ballet, concerts and operas, Muhu bread, cakes from Pierre, Vana Tallinn, Monika’s jam and the company of my Estonian friends.

Ik tref het, want in november is er de handwerkbeurs Mardilaat, een international breiconferentie, het 3D-event waar ik een presentatie en workshop mag geven en een kerstmarkt op het Raekoja-plein, waar ze de lekkerste glühwein met nootjes brouwen. Laat ik nu nèt om de hoek zitten… Jan komt nog een paar weken iconen schilderen, gezellig!

I am lucky, because in November there is the Mardilaat handicraft fair, an international knitting conference, the 3D event where I shall give a presentation and workshop and a Christmas market on Raekoja square, where they brew the tastiest mulled wine with nuts. Well, my apartment is very close to it… Jan will come for a few weeks to paint icons, nice!

Een paar dagen geleden viel er een prachtig boek op mijn deurmat: Fair Isle Designs from Shetland Knitters Volume 2 van het Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers. Volume 1 was een groot succes, zodat velen met smart uitkeken naar het tweede deel. Ook dit keer weer tjokvol ontwerpen die het eigene van authentiek Shetland-breiwerk uitstralen, maar wel zijn aangepast aan de hedendaagse smaak, draagcomfort en breitechniek. Truien, sokken, mutsen, haarbanden, shawls, collen, een kussen en wanten. De wanten zijn ontworpen door Brita Hövenmark, de Zweedse dame die in de zomer vaak in het textielmuseum is te vinden. Ze is net als ik gek op Twijnend Breien.

In de inleiding van het boek ook een stukje over de geschiedenis van het breien in Shetland en een hoofdstuk met antwoorden van de ontwerpers op allerlei vragen. Kortom, complimenten aan de Shetlandse breiers en een aanwinst voor je breiboekenkast! Het boek is te bestellen bij de Shetland Times bookshop in Lerwick.

A few days ago a beautiful book fell on my doorstep: Fair Isle Designs from Shetland Knitters Volume 2 of the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers . Volume 1 was a great success, so many were looking forward to the second part. Again full of designs that exude the authentic Shetland knitwear, but are adapted to contemporary taste, wearing comfort and knitting technology. Sweaters, socks, hats, hair bands, shawls, neck warmers, a pillow and mittens. The mittens were designed by Brita Hövenmark, the Swedish lady who can often be found in the textile museum in the summer. Just like me, she loves Twijnend Knitting.

In the introduction of the book also a piece about the history of knitting in Shetland and a chapter with answers from the designers to all kinds of questions.
