Life 'n Knitting

En daar gaan ik morgen alweer, dit keer naar Riga in Letland, om daar onder meer de opening van de wantententoonstelling van het National History Museum of Latvia mee te maken. En als ik er dan toch ben,… lekker de stad verkennen, naar álle wol- en handwerkwinkels en natuurlijk ook naar Sena Klets, het mekka van de textieltraditie in de vorm van een schitterende winkel in het centrum van de oude stad. Met een volle week de tijd zal ik voldoende tijd hebben om op zoek te gaan naar meer informatie over Magic Motifs en aanverwante zaken. Op vrijdag is er de première van het ballet Peer Gynt (Grieg) en op zondag sluit ik met Jan die vrijdag arriveert in Riga de week feestelijk af met de Fledermaus (Strauss) in het chique operagebouw.

And there I go again tomorrow, this time to Riga in Latvia, to be present at the opening of the mitten exhibition of the National History Museum of Latvia. And if I’m there anyway,… I will stay to explore the city, go to all yarn- and handicraft shops and of course also to Sena Klets, the mecca of textile tradition in the form of a gorgeous shop in the center of the old town. With a full week’s time I will have enough time to try to find more information about Magic Motifs and related matters. On Friday there will be the premiere of the ballet Peer Gynt (Grieg) and on Sunday I close with Jan who will arrive in Riga on Friday the week with the Fledermaus (Strauss) in the chic Opera House.

Je zal er maar mee behept zijn, liefde voor boeken. Dan wil je ze allemaal in huis hebben, altijd kunnen grijpen, om gericht naar iets te kunnen zoeken of je wilt ze gewoon lekker door kunnen bladeren. Boeken zijn belangrijk, want het zijn schatkistjes vol kennis en wetenswaardigheden die op die manier worden vastgelegd en verspreid.

De Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers heeft de handen in een geslagen en een prachtig boek over Fair Isle breiwerk uitgegeven. Ik was bij het gilde te gast in juli in het Shetlandse Voe toen tijdens de gildevergadering de laatste dingen werden besproken over de uitgave en verleden week viel het bij mij op de mat. En ik ben er dolblij mee, want in dit boek is een grandioze verzameling met de hand ingekleurde Fair Ilse-motieven vastgelegd.

Na een korte inleiding door Carol Christiansen (curator Shetland Museum) over de achtergrond van de patronenboeken en de geschiedenis van de Fair Isle-patronen, vind je 85 pagina’s vól met motiefjes. De lay-out is onaangetast, wat je ziet zijn perfecte kleurenkopiën van de authentieke patroonbladen uit Bill Henry’s notitieboeken uit de jaren twintig of dertig van de vorige eeuw. En dat is zoals je het wilt zien, inclusief de vergeelde randjes, maar met de échte met de hand en kleurpotlood ingekleurde tekeningen. Duidelijk wordt ook de Noorse invloed op de Shetlandse breiwereld, want bij een aantal patronen wordt expliciet vermeld dat het hier om Noorse motieven gaat. Bladerend door het boek zie ik al allerlei prachtige projecten voor me. De motieven prikkelen de creativiteit, want het zijn geen complete patronen, je zal er zelf toepassingen voor moeten bedenken. Maar de kleurexperimenten van toen inspireren nog steeds en nodigen uit te worden getest en aangepast aan je eigen smaak en kleurgevoel. Kortom een heerlijk boek dat niet mag ontbreken in je boekenkast. Mijn advies: ga ‘m zelf maar halen in het prachtige Shetland!

You will be with me afflicted, a big love of books. You want to have them all, keep them always whitin reach, so you will be at any time able to grap them and look for something or just to be able to browse through when you feel like it. Books are important because they are treasure chests of knowledge that can be preserved in this way and disclosed to all interested knitters.

Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers has published a beautiful book on Fair Isle knitting. I was at the guild meeting hosted in July in the Shetland Voe when the guild members discussed the last issues during the guild meeting. Last week the book fell on my doormat. And I am delighted with it, because in this book you find a magnificent collection of hand-colored Fair Ilse motifs.

After a brief introduction on the background of the pattern books and the history of Fair Isle patterns by Carol Christiansen (curator Shetland Museum), you’ll find 85 pages stuffed with patterns. The layout is unaffected, what you see are perfect color copies of the authentic pattern sheets of Bill Henry’s notebooks from the twenties and thirties of the last century. And that’s the way you want to see it, including the yellowed edges, but with the real hand and color crayon drawings. It becomes clear also that there had been Norwegian influence on the Shetland knitting world, for it is explicitly mentioned in a number of patterns that it is a Norwegian motifs. Browsing through the book, I see all kinds of wonderful projects for me. The motives stimulate creativity, because they are not a complete patterns, you will have to invent uses for it your self. But the color experiments inspire and invite to be tested and adapted to your own taste and color sense. Overall a wonderful book that should not be missing in your bookcase. My advice: go to beautiful Shetland and buy it your self there!

Soms heb je geluk en kom je voor een habbekrats iets geweldigs tegen. In Inverness stapten Nancy Marchant en ik een tweedehands winkeltje binnen waar ik zoiets geweldigs vond. Voor weinig, slechts 12 pond, dus minder nog dan 14 euro. Nee, dit keer geen breiwerk, maar een andere passie van mij, traditionele kleding. De kilt die ik er vond is prachtig. De kleurechte stof is nog steeds stralend van kleur. Hier en daar een klein mottengaatje mag de pret niet drukken. Maar dat mag dan ook wel, want het oude etiketje in de rokband verraadt dat het hier gaat om de kilt van mrs Hendry uit 1957. Officieel is hij mij te klein, maar met wat kleine ingrepen kan ik ‘m vermaken. Zal ik dat doen? Of blijft het een hebbeding? Ik draag graag kilts en plooirokken en heb vier draagbare kilts in mijn kast hangen. In Shetland heb ik er verleden jaar zelfs nog twee gekocht. Dit zijn kilts die aan de eisen van deze tijd zijn aangepast, lekker vlotte modellen die fijn dragen, maar wel gemaakt van mooie wollen stof en voorzien van een eenvoudige kiltspeld.

Nèt over het water bij ons hotel in het centrum van Inverness vond ik een traditionele kiltmaker. In de winkel veel écht mooie spullen van hoge kwaliteit. Een vitrine met kilttasjes voor mannen, rokspelden en ander moois. Een tafel in het midden van de winkel ligt vol met stalenboeken van diverse stoffenmakers. Hieruit kan je een stof selecteren waar je een traditionele kilt van kan laten maken. De stoffen kunnen per 8 yard worden besteld, maar soms hebben ze restjes te koop. De tartanstof van mrs Hendry’s kilt was ook te koop in de winkel. Op het etiketje staat dat het hier gaat om een tartan van de clan MacDonald, en wel de Ancient.

Sometimes you get lucky and you find a bargain that is really amazing. In Inverness Nancy Marchant and I visited a shop with second hand stuff, where I found a treasure. For next to nothing, only 12 pounds, so even less than 14 euros. No, this time not knitwear, but another passion of mine, traditional clothing. The kilt that I found is lovely. The colours are still bright. A small moth hole here and there  should not spoil the fun. That is to be expected, because the old label on the waistband reveals that this is the kilt worn by Mrs. Hendry in 1957. Officially, it’s too small to me, but with some small alterations I will fit in. Shall I do that? Or shall I keep it like it is? I like to wear kilts and pleated skirts and own four wearable kilts already. In Shetland I have even bought two kilts last year. These are kilts that are adapted to the demands of the times, nice smooth models that I can wear comfortably, but made of fine wool fabric and with a simple kilt pin.

Just across the water at our hotel in the heart of Inverness I found a traditional kilt maker. In the shop there was a lot really nice quality stuff. A showcase with kilt bags for men, kilt pins and other goodies. A table in the middle of the store is filled with sample books of various fabric makers. Here you can select a fabric and they will make it into a traditional kilt. The fabrics can be ordered by 8 yards, but sometimes they have leftovers for sale. The tartan fabric of Mrs. Hendry’s kilt was also available in the store. On the label states that it is a tartan of the MacDonald clan, namely the Ancient.

Wat een prachtige ervaring! Vijf dagen op reis naar het mooie Inverness bij Loch Ness om workshops en presentaties te geven tijdens het Loch Ness Knitting Festival in Eden Court. Het weer kon niet mooier zijn voor de tijd van het jaar. In het vliegtuig ontmoette ik al de eerste breiers. De eerste middag hadden we tijd voor onszelf, dus lekker de stad verkennen en shoppen met Nancy Marchant. Vroeg in de avond haalde de taxi ons om ons in onze party outfit naar het galadiner in Kingsmills hotel te brengen. Een feestelijke locatie waar de grote ronde tafels uitbundig waren gedekt en een man in kilt de haggis aansneed. Gelukkig hadden ze voor mij een vega pompoensoepje. Een avond met veel vertier, speeches van Willie, Alan en Christel Seyfarth, doedelzakmuziek en Schotse dans.

What a wonderful experience! A five day trip to beautiful Inverness near Loch Ness to teach and give presentations during the Loch Ness Knitting Festival at Eden Court. The weather could not be better for the time of the year. During the flight I met the first knitters. The first afternoon we were free to go into town and some shopping with Nancy Marchant. Early in the evening a taxi took us in our party outfit to the gala dinner in Kingsmills hotel . A festive location where the large round tables were lavishly covered and a man in kilt broached the haggis. Luckily they had a vegan pumpkin soup for me. An evening with lots of entertainment, speeches by Willie, Alan and Christel Seyfarth, bagpipe music and Scottish dance.

De volgende ochtend gaf ik mijn eerste workshop over twijnend breien, ‘s middags de eerste presentatie in het Scala, een mooie bioscoopachtige zaal met alle professionele voorzieningen voor het geven van presentaties. Het was de eerste keer dat ik een zich opwarmende doedelzakspeler in mijn lokaal aantrof. Tussendoor kon ik gelukkig even naar de Marketplace om wat leuke dingen te scoren. Voor Jan een blauw-zwarte cashmere shawl en voor mezelf twee strengen heavy lace-garen van DyeNinja, geverfd in diep oranje, de kleur van een goeie Armagnac. ‘s Avonds had Di Gilpin een gezellige breiavond georganiseerd, waaraan Nancy en ik natuurlijk deelnamen.

The next morning I gave my first workshop on twined knitting, at noon the first presentation at the Scala, a beautiful cinematic space with all professional facilities for giving presentations. It was the first time I found a bagpiper in my classroom that was warming up for his performance. In between I was happy to go to the Marketplace to score some nice things. For Jan a blue-black cashmere shawl and for myself two skeins of heavy lace yarn of DyeNinja, dyed in deep orange, the color of a good Armagnac. That evening Di Gilpin had organized a cozy knit night, which Nancy and I attended of course.

Zaterdag startte met gezellig bijpraten tijdens het ontbijt met Alice Starmore. Daarna weer aan de slag. We werden na de dag met workshop en presentatie geven verrast met een concert, of zoals de muzikanten uitlegden, feestelijk avond met muziek en dans. En dat was het zéker, want ik ben gek op traditionele muziek, dans en kleding. Vooral de fidler was ronduit geweldig, dus er gingen een paar CD’s mee die ze graag voor me wilden signeren.

Saturday started with a nice chat at breakfast with Alice Starmore. Then back to work. After a day of giving a workshop and presentation we were surprised by a concert, or like the musicians called it, a festive evening with music and dance. And it was certainly a surprise, because I love traditional music, dance and costumes. Especially the fidler was utterly amazing, so I bought a couple of CD’s, which they were happy to sign for me.

Zondag, na mijn laatste workshop, kreeg ik nog een verrassing, want ik mocht aanschuiven bij drie Deense dames die een taxi hadden gehuurd om ons in één middag langs de highlights van de streek te rijden. Zo zag ik de archeologische vindplaats van graven van rond de 4000 jaar oud, het battlefield Culloden (bekend van en startpunt van de boeken/serie Outlander), de Clootie Well (een bos met een wensbron waar mensen stroken textiel in de bomen hingen om te vragen om geluk of gezondheid voor zieke familieleden of vrienden, echt bizar!), het betoverend mooie Loch Ness, het hutje van de Nessie Hunter en een winkel met een expositie over de textielindustrie. De dag sloten we af met een afscheidsdiner in ons hotel met de Deense Paulette, Lizbeth, Vithard en Pernille en de Engelse Chrissie met haar echtgenoot. De sticky toffee pudding was hemels!

Sunday, after my last workshop, I got another surprise as I was allowed to join in with three Danish women who had hired a taxi to drive them in one afternoon along the highlights of the region. I saw the archaeological site with graves from around 4000 years old, the battlefield Culloden (known and starting point of the books/series Outlander), the Clootie Well (a forest with a wishing well where people hang strips of fabric in the trees to ask for happiness and health for sick relatives or friends, really bizarre!), the amazingly beautiful Loch Ness, the hut of the Nessie Hunter and a shop with an exhibition about the textile industry. The day ended with a farewell dinner at our hotel with the Danish Paulette, Lizbeth, Vithard and Pernille and English Chrissie with her husband. The sticky toffee pudding was heavenly!

Toen ik maandag thuis kwam keek ik bijna met weemoed terug op bijzondere ervaring. Vijf prachtige dagen, stralend zonnig weer, een geweldig breifestival, het terugzien van oude en het maken van nieuwe vrienden en de fijne gedachte dat er weer tientallen breiers ‘om’ zijn voor twijnend breien. Het was voorbij in een oogwenk, maar blijft me bij als een prachtige intense ervaring. De plannen zijn om het festival ook volgend jaar weer te laten plaatsvinden, maar deze eerste keer, dat blijft altijd zo speciaal. En ik was erbij!

Monday when I got home I looked back at a time that flew so quickly, but was such a special experience. Five beautiful days, sunny weather, a great knit festival, meeting old and making new friends and the comforting thought that dozens of knitters are now also into twined knitting. It was over in an instant, but will remain with me as a wonderful intense experience. Plans are to have the festival again next year take place, but the first time, that is always so special. And I was there!
