Hazel Tindall tipte me om tijdens mijn verblijf in Shetland vooral naar de Cunningburgh Show te gaan. Ik verwachtte een gebouwtje met wat tafeltjes met breiwerk, maar dat was het dus niet. Het bleek een enorm terrein vol dieren, zoals schapen, kippen en ponies, taarten, groentes, bloemen, standjes met informatie over landelijke onderwerpen en breiwerk te zijn. Alles werd grondig onderzocht door de juryleden en gekeurd aan het begin van de dag. Aan het eind prijkte menig schaap, courgette, krentencake of breiwerk met een prijslint.

Alle schapenrassen in Shetland waren aanwezig, sommige met een geel of oranje kleurspoelinkje. Dit was niet gedaan om aan de laatste schapenmode te voldoen, maar om de kwaliteit van de wol beter zichtbaar te maken.

In een apart gebouw was het breiwerk tentoongesteld. Jamieson’s and Smith had de garens geleverd in een kleurenpalet waar iedere breier het mee moest doen. Het leuke is dat, ondanks dat iedere breier met dezelfde kleuren moet werken, zij toch steeds tot heel verschillend resultaten komen. Er waren ook prachtige kanten shawls en ander breiwerk. Wat een creativiteit van de Shetlandse breiers!

Jan zag een paar mooie mitaines die de eerste prijs hadden wonnen. Niet alle breiwerk was te koop, maar deze wel. Wat een gelukkie!

Hazel Tindall tipped me to go to the Cunningburgh Show going during my stay in Shetland. I was expecting a small building with a few tables with knitting, but it was not at all like that. It turned out to be a big terrain full of animals such as sheep, chickens and ponies, cakes, vegetables, flowers, stands with information on rural issues and knitting. Everything was thoroughly examined by the judges and judged at the start of the day. At the end adorned many a sheep, zucchini, raisins cake or knitting a prize ribbon.

All breeds of sheep in Shetland were present, some with yellow or orange coloured fur. This was not done in order to meet the last sheep fashion, but in order to better visualize the quality of the wool.

In a separate building the knitwear was exhibited. Jamieson’s and Smith supplied the yarn in a color palette where every knitter had to work with. The nice thing is that even though every knitter had to work with the same colour, yet they still come to very different looking results. There were also beautiful lace shawls and other garments. The Shetland knitters had been so creative!

Jan saw some pretty mitts which had won the first prize. Not all knitting was for sale, but it does. He was so lucky!

Een van de mooiste – en winderigste – locaties op Shetland is de Sumburgh Head Lighthouse uit 1821 in het zuiden van het Mainland, vlakbij het vliegveld. Een groot wit gevaarte dat bovenop de enorme rotsen van meer dan 100 meter hoog de veiligheid van de schepen in de buurt verhoogt. Recentelijk zijn het gebouw en de directe omgeving volledig gerenoveerd, iets waar de medewerkers erg trots op zijn. Als je geluk hebt, zie je er walvissen. Tussen mei en half augustus wemelt het op de rotsen van de puffins die er nesten. Deze penquinachtige vogels met hoog schattigheidsgehalte worden ook afgebeeld op allerlei artikelen die je in de giftshop kan kopen. Maar dan hebben ze wel een gebreid truitje aan.

De mok is versierd met Shetlandse vuurtorentjes in Fair Ilse breiwerk. Op de andere foto zijn een muismatje, onderzetters, een prachtig opschrijfboekje met een kantgebreide shawl en een map met oude reclames uit het Shetland Museum and Archives te zien. En nog twee gezellige mokken, want wat is het leuk om iedere morgen bij de koffie al even aan Shetland te worden herinnerd.

One of the most beautiful – and windy – locations in Shetland you find at the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse, build in 1821 in the south of the Mainland, near the airport. A big white colossus that rises on top of huge rocks of more than 100 meters high, increasing the safety of the vessels in the vicinity. Recently the building and surrounding area are renovated, something the employees are very proud of. If you are lucky, you can spot some whales. Between May and mid-August lots of puffins nest on the rocks. These extremely cute birds that look like penquins, are also depicted on many articles you can buy in the gift shop. But then they do have a knitted sweater on.

The mug is decorated with lighthouses in Shetland, covered in Fair Ilse knitwear. The other photo shows a mouse pad, coasters, a beautiful notebook with a hand-knitted shawl and a folder with old advertisements from the Shetland Museum and Archives. And two cozy mugs, as it is so nice to be reminded of Shetland every morning when I take a cup of coffee.

Drie dagen later/three days later

In een van de Franse tijdschriften waarover ik mijn vorige blog vertelde, stond nog wat opmerkelijks. Een nieuwe betekenis van de term ‘breiboek’. Niet inhoudelijk, maar wel als kaft voor de boeken in je boekenkast. Nou, voorlopig ben ik nog wel even bezig als ik voor al mijn boeken een jasje wil breien!

In one of the French magazines that I told about my previous blog, I found another remarkable article. A new meaning of the term “knitting book”. Not substantive, but as cover for the books on your bookshelf. Well, I will be busy for a while if want to knit a jacket for all my books.

Op de grote brocante (antiek- en curiosamarkt) en een antiquariaat in Cahors vond wat oude breiboekjes. Le Tricot was de interessantste. Het boekje van uitgever Cornely uit Parijs was de uitgave over breien uit de serie over beroepen en ambachten. Helaas ontbreekt een jaartal, maar het zal zeker oud zijn, daar getuigt de layout en prijs (10 centimes) wel van.

Het is beslist geen gezellig breiboekje met patroontjes en bemoedigende opmerking om lekker creatief te zijn. Maar wel worden maar liefst vier manieren van opzetten, rechte en averechte steken en afkanten uitgelegd, verduidelijkt met diverse tekeningetjes. Daarna gaat het over breiplanken, punikken en zelfs breimachines. In amper 30 pagina’s in klein formaat wordt een duidelijk beeld gegeven van wat handbreien en machinaal breien inhoudt.

The book publisher Cornely from Paris was the issue about knitting in the series on trades and crafts. Unfortunately I could not find the publishing year, but it will definitely be old, as uou can see on the layout and price (10 centimes).

It is certainly not a cozy knitting book with patterns and encouraging remark to being creative. But no less than four ways of casting, knit and purl stitches and casting off is explained and clarified with various drawings. Then the autheur moves on to knitting boards, punikken and even knitting. In a mere 30 pages, in small format, you learn what hand knitting and machine knitting is.
