Heel Nieuwpoort deed mee.

Top!

All inhabitants of Nieuwpoort participated. The employees of De Schapekop had decorated almost all homes and businesses in the center of the historic town with knitted and crocheted handicrafts. Scarves, shawls, blankets, sweaters, everything was pulled out of the closets, thrown  on statues, rolled out like red carpets or even if – literally, as floating objects – thrown into the water.

I spent two afternoons on the podium in the Arsenal (historical building), chatting with visitors, meanwhile telling them about twined knitting, Haapsalu shawls, my books and my Advanced Knitting Course. Of course every now and then I had to sign books and had those interested in twined knitting knit some rows. Many subscribed quickly for my workshops on 23 and 30 January or even enlisted for the Advanced Knitting Course in autumn in the Schapekop.

These two days fly by, especially if it is so cozy. Hanneke Bezem, also a teacher at the festival, Jan and I said ‘cheers’ with tea, wine and apple pie to celebrate the success of the event. Let’s hope that the Schapekop will again organize this great festival in 2017! Carina, employees of the Schapekop and all teachers and volounteers, thank you for your hard work for the success of this event! Top!

Titia, Elsbeth and I were last year during our trip to Riga in Latvia, welcomed by knitters from Dobele. A wonderful, warm welcome, with a big pot of delicious tea from local herbs and Latvian tasty snacks and a specially designed exhibition for us. The women had brought their finest knits and exhibited it all in the roomsof the crafts house, so we got a good idea of their crafts and knittings. Beautiful work, not only traditional Latvian and Baltic, but also very modern with patterns of Ravelry. Proudly they showed us everything. They were also very interested in the twined knitting I brought and my new book, which was still in the making. They gave me their book about the craftsmen from Dobele, but surely the most beautiful souvenir was a sweet crocheted yellow duckling that had been made by one of the women and handed me with a sweet smile.Proud they were also about their knitting project together, a huge snake, and of course, we could add some of our  knitting too to it. Thanks to Anita from the local tourist information for arranging this meeting. Hopefully we’ll meet the lovely ladies from Dobele in their beautiful crafts house soon  again!

If even the mayor is going to interfere with the knitting together of two towns…

Handwerkschooltje Soest

In a book about old Soest I found a picture of the old sewing and knitting school (founded 8 May, 1845). Now they changed the text on the facade to ‘naaldvakschool’ (a more modern way to call the school), but otherwise it looks just as it did before. Only the girls in white aprons are no longer sitting on the lawn. The school was located in the Anna Paulowna House, which was founded thanks to Anna Paulowna who donated a sum of money.

Ms. Stalenhoef, wife of baker Kors Stalenhoef, has also been immortalized knitting. Cosy, with the feet on a stove and her ball of wool in a dish.

On the flea market on Kings Day 27 July, I coincidentally, among all the junk, found something special. Henriette Tellegen, the author of the first book about fisherman sweaters, made for bookstore Den Boer in Baarn in September 1991 a reader about the, as we say in the Netherlands ‘nuttige en fraaie handwerken’, meaning useful and beautiful needlework. After a foreword in which she displays her own ideas about why women want to do needlework (to be creative, because ‘we can buy everything’), she tells about the history of the Dutch in needlework. The barely 30-page document, which is still made with the typewriter and smells lightly of stencil ink, there are in addition to several statements from interviews with women from across the country, photos of old textiles and knitwear. It is a extraordinary and dated record of Henriette’s image of the history of handicraft education and the consequences thereof, the euro I paid more than worth it!

In 2010 I met Henriëtte Tellgenen in Utrecht, read the review on Life ‘n Knitting.

On 11 and 12 July in the beautiful Lot (South of France, a little further south than the Dordogne) there will take place for the third year a wool festival: Le Lot et la Laine. It promises a big sunny, warm and woolly party!
I will give classes on both days, on 11 July, a day workshop twined knitting and on 12July a shorter class on Haapsalu shawls. I am already preparing. What to bring along? A lot of stuff,  because I want to show as much as possible! And my rusty French? Fortunately, there is a translator present. 😉 Course I will bring a lot of books So Warm! and Warm Hands, which I love to sign for you personally.

I’ve heard of a few Dutch knitters that are planning to go there too. Make it into a nice holiday in the environment of the festival grounds and enjoy both la douce France and one of the best knitting and wool events you ever attended!
