Als je denkt dat ze alleen in de noordelijke landen breiconferenties kunnen organiseren, dan heb je het mis. De Nederlandse Kostuumverenining organiseerde gisteren in het mooie Dokkum in Friesland de Zomerdag, een conferentie geheel gewijd aan het breien. De aanleiding waren tentoonstellingen in musea in Friesland, waaronder een werkelijk geweldige in het Admiraalshuis in Dokkum.

Anke, je weet wel, van de Gelderse Mutsen, vroeg mij als introducee mee, maar ik besloot ter plekke ook lid te worden van deze vereniging die zoveel doet voor het in stand houden van ons textiele erfgoed. We werden ontvangen met koffie en een lekkere muffin, waarna we in de grote zaal plaats namen met ons breiwerk onder handbereik. Gieneke, voorzitter van de vereniging, leidde het programma in. Terwijl we gezellig menig toertje breide en links van mij werd gesponnen op de spintol, vertelden Ihno Dragt over antiek breigereedschap, Stella Ruhe over visserstruien, Hanne Zimmermann over het 16e eeuwse Groningse breiwerk, Sandra Comis over breiwerk en mutsen gevonden op Spitsbergen en Sytske Wille zorgde voor een vrolijke noot tijdens haar bespreking van de wonderlijke breisels en haaksels uit de het oude tijdschrift de Gracieuse.

Even een klifhangertje,… later meer over de geweldige breitentoonstelling en wat we daar hebben gekocht!

If you think only the northern countries are able to organize knitting conferences, then you are wrong. The kostuumverenining (organisation for national costumes) organized yesterday in the beautiful Dokkum in Friesland (north of the Netherlands) the Zomerdag (the Summer day), a conference devoted entirely to knitting. The reason for organising this were exhibitions in museums in Friesland, including a really great in Admiral House in Dokkum, but more on that later.

Anke, you know, the Gelderse Mutsen, asked me as a guest, but I decided to join this association as a member right away, as they do so much for the preservation of our textile heritage. We were welcomed with coffee and a tasty muffin, after which we took place in the great hall with our knitting in reach. Gieneke, president of the association, led the program. While we knitted row after row and on my right someone was spinning on a spindle, Ihno Dragt told antique knitting tools, Stella Ruhe held a speech on fisherman sweaters, Hanne Zimmermann told about the 16th century Groningen knitting, Sandra Comis on knitwear and hats found on Spitsbergen and Sytske Wille ensured a happy note during her discussion of the strange knitwear and crocheted items from the old magazine the Gracieuse.

Nee hoor, bijna niks gekocht… ja ja, geen garen dan. Toch presteerde ik het om met 18 kilo heen te gaan, diverse spullen achter te laten en met 23 kilo plus flinke handbagage terug te gaan. En dus echt geen enkel bolletje garen, want dat hebben we daar tot onze verbazing niet gevongen.

Riga is een enige stad, maar niet echt als ‘modestad’ te benoemen. Maar het prachtige gebreide jurkje van Ivko hing voor me klaar. Gieneke en Corry slaagde ook in het kleine winkeltje in het centrum van Riga en blij gingen we op de foto met z’n allen in onze nieuwe kleren. Elsbeth hielp Titia in een jurkje, maar dat werd ‘m helaas toch niet. Ivko is zeker een merk om in de gaten te houden. Ze maken kwalitatief goede dingen van dunne machinale breisels met folkloristische invloeden.

Really, I almost didn’t buy a thing… yeah, at least, no yarn, I mean. Still, I managed to take with me to Riga 18 kilos , leave behind all kind of stuff and go back with 23 kilos plus hand luggage. Not a ball of yarn, as we didn’t find any I liked to our big surprise.

Riga is a great city, but can’t really be labeled as ‘fashion city’. But the beautiful knitted dress by Ivko hung ready for me. Gieneke and Corry also succeeded to find something they liked in this small shop in the center of Riga so I made a photo of us all together in our new clothes. Elsbeth helped Titia to get into a dress, but unfortunately she didn’t like it enough to buy it. Ivko is definitely a brand to keep an eye on. They make good quality stuff machining of thin knits with folk influences.

Tot de jaren negentig waren de motieven op de Letse wanten streekgebonden. Maar in 1990 bracht de publicatie van het wantenboek Latviesu Rakstainie Cimdi van Mirdza Slava daar verandering in. Dit boek vol prachtige motieven en patronen maakte het voor breiers in heel Letland mogelijk te kiezen uit een schat aan lokale motieven. De wereld werd wat groter hierdoor, maar de consequentie was dat het onderscheid tussen de verschillende lokale breitradities minder werd. Het boek is inmiddels alleen nog in antiquariaten te koop, voor veel geld. Ik vond prijzen van pakweg 150 tot meer dan 2000 euro. Ja ja,…

Op de grote markt in de oude zeppelinhangars in Riga vonden Gieneke, Elsbeth, Titia, Corry en ik een oud Russisch vrouwtje dat op haar kleinkind paste. Op de tafel lag de koopwaar, haar zelfgebreide sokken en wanten en wat garen. En Latviesu Rakstainie Cimdi! De wanten op haar standje waren gebreid naar patronen in dit boek. We kochten een aantal wanten bij haar, terwijl ze ondertussen het kind suste. De buurtjes, de énige standhouders op deze gigantische markt waar ik niet mocht fotograferen, sloegen het tafereeltje gelaten gade en de poes aan de overkant sliep door in zijn perfect passende teiltje. De bruin-oranje wanten met rode bloemen zijn van mij.

Die avond verraste ik mijn Estlandse vriendin Monika, die ook in Riga was in verband met de wantenconferentie, met het boek waarvan ik wist dat ze het zo graag in haar bezit wilde hebben.

Until the nineties, the motifs that were knitting in Latvian mittens were very local. But in 1990 the publication of the mitten book Latviesu Rakstainie Cimdi written by Mirdza Slava change that. This book full of beautiful designs and patterns made it possible for knitters throughout Latvia to choose from a wealth of local motifs. The world was thus somewhat larger, but the consequence was that the distinction between the different local knitting traditions became less. The book is now only for sale in antiquarian bookshops, for a lot of money. I found prices from roughly 150 to over 2000 euros. Yeah, …

On the big market in the old zeppelin hangars in Riga Gieneke, Elsbeth, Titia, Corry and I found an old Russian woman who looked after her grandchild. On the table lay the merchandise, her hand knitted socks and mittens and some yarn. And Latviesu Rakstainie Cimdi! The mittens on her stand were knitted from patterns in this book. We bought some mittens from her, while she was hushing the child. The neighbors, the only stand holders in this huge market that not allowed me to make photos, looked at the scene with regret and across the street the lazu cat slept in his perfectly fitting basin. The mittens in orange brown with red flowers are mine.

That night I surprised my Estonian friend Monika Estonian, who was also in Riga for the conference, with in the book that I knew she also they wanted so badly.

Elsbeth hield de stand bij op haar nieuwe smartphone met stappenteller, en schrik niet, 97781 stappen wat overeenkomt met 73.1 km. Het overtuigend bewijs werd geleverd, maar of we het moeten geloven? 😉

Elsbeth kept score on her new smartphone with pedometer, and the result is  97781 steps corresponding to 73.1 km. Conclusive evidence was provided, but whether we should believe? 😉

Het was vandaag KIP-dag (Knitting In Public day) en dat namen we dit jaar zeer letterlijk. Anke had voor de Shetland-ploeg bestaande uit Marieke, MoniqueB, Corry de B, Titia, Elsbeth, zichzelf en mij een voorpretdag georganiseerd in Zwolle op boerderij Vreugdevol. Anke had haar gebreide kip meegenomen en ik lokte de boerderijkippen met het hoorntje van mijn ijsje. Elsbeth legde de laatste hand aan haar kousen voor het toneelstuk Anne Frank in Amsterdam en zag in mij wel een goed foot model. De eigenaar fakete dat hij ook een toertje meebreide. Zo brachten wij de dag genoeglijk en vreugdevol door, terwijl we elkaar’s projecten en boeken over Shetland doorkeken en plannen voor de reis in oktober doorspraken. We hebben er zin in en ik geloof dat Monique de dagen zelfs aftelt!

It was KIP day (Knitting in Public Day) today, and we took this very literally this year as ‘kip’ is ‘chicken’ in the Dutch language. Anke had organised for the Shetland team comprising Marieke, MoniqueB, Corry B, Titia, Elsbeth, herself and me a day out in Zwolle on farm Vreugdevol (‘Joyful’). Anke brought her knitted chicken, and I lored the farm chickens with the horn of my ice cream. Elsbeth put the finishing touches on her stockings for the play Anne Frank in Amsterdam and wanted me as a good foot model. The owner of Vreugdevol faked he could knit too. So we spent the day pleasant and ‘vreugdevol’ (‘joyful’) by while we looked through each other’s projects and books on Shetland and made plans for the trip in October. We are looking forward to it and I believe that Monique is even counting the days!

In Letland groeien er niet alleen blaadjes aan de bomen, maar ook wanten. In ieder geval wel in de prachtige tuin Lejnieki van Haralds en Skaidrite nabij Dobele. De idyllische tuin ligt prachtig aan het water, staat vol met de creatieve uitingen van het lieve oudere echtpaar en voorziet hen van groenten, fruit en honing. Er is zelfs een piramide voor zieke plantjes met een bed op precies de juiste plaats om de positieve werking van de piramide te ervaren. Als je niet lekker bent, kan je er ook gaan liggen en voel je je binnen vijf minuten beter. Maar waar wij toch vooral voor kwamen was de wantenboom.

Skaidrite is één van de beste wantenbreiers van Letland. Er is geen motiefje dat ze niet heeft gebreid. Ze ontwerpt zelf ook wanten, die een plaatsje krijgen in haar wantenboom. Tot onze grote verrassing mochten we alledrie een paar wanten uitkiezen als cadeautje! Ze had een aantal wanten uitgestald in het voorhuisje, waar we gezellig thee dronken en Letse pasteitjes aten. Ik koos de wanten met het blokjesmotief die in de Estlandse variant ook in Warme Handen staan. En nog wel in geel, een kleur die ik sinds kort ontzettend leuk vind!

Gelukkig was de kleindochter van Skaidrite en Haralds er om te vertalen. Zo konden we goed communiceren met Skaidrite en Haralds. We stelden vragen over met name breien en de wanten en Haralds wilde van alles weten over Nederland. Het wereldje van de bewoners van het boerderijtje in de middle of nowhere is sinds de belangstelling voor traditioneel breiwerk is toegenomen, groter geworden. Ze ontvangen zo’n 700 gasten per jaar van over de hele wereld, waaronder Japanners die een heel hoofdstuk aan hen hebben gewijd in een boek over Letse wanten.

Titia, Elsbeth en Corry waren wel bereid om de wanten te showen. Bij Corry, die niet echt gek is op op foto gaan, overheerste de nieuwsgierigheid echter…

In Latvia not only leaves grow on trees, but also mittens. At least they do in the beautiful garden of Lejnieki from Haralds and Skaidrite close to Dobele. The idyllic garden is beautifully located on the water side, is filled with the creative expressions of the sweet elderly couple and provide them with fruits, vegetables and honey. There is even a pyramid for sick plants with a bed in exactly the right position to to catch the energy, so you can experience the positive effect of the pyramid. If you feel sick, you can also lie there and will feel better within five minutes. But we came mainly for the mitten tree.

Skaidrite is one of the best for knitters of Latvia. There is no motif that she has not knitted. She also designs mittens herself, which also have a place in her mitten tree. To our great surprise, she let us all choose a pair of mittens as a gift! There were some mittens for display in the house, where we ate and drank tea and ate Latvian pastries. I chose the mittens with pattern blocks which is in the Estonian version also in Warm Hands. And still in yellow, a color that I like a lot lately!

Fortunately, the granddaughter of Skaidrite and Haralds was there to translate. Thus, we were able to communicate well with Skaidrite and Haralds. We asked questions about particular knitting and mittens and Haralds wanted to know everything about the Netherlands. The world of the inhabitants of the farm in the middle of nowhere has increased. Since the interest in traditional knitwear has increased, they received about 700 visitors a year from all over the world, including Japanese who have devoted an entire chapter about them in a book about Latvian mittens.

Titia, Elsbeth and Corry were willing to show off the mittens. For Corry, who is not really fond of being photographed, but curiosity won …

Riga is goed bereikbaar voor de Estlandse breiers, dus ze waren goed vertegenwoordigd. Anu Randmaa breide zelfs tijdens de conferentie en in de bus naar het Open Air Museum vlijtig door aan haar prachtige Rositud kousen. Zelden zag ik mooier breiwerk dan deze wolwitte kousen met dieprode motieven. Het zijn nu gelukskousen want ik mocht acht (mijn geluksgetal) steken meebreien aan de kous die op de pennen stond.

Monika Plaser, mijn lieve Estlandse vriendin die tot mijn grote genoegen ook bij was, werkte ijverig door aan de wanten naar patroon uit haar eigen familie. Ze zijn zo strak gebreid dat ze rechtop blijven staan. Daardoor zijn ze duurzaam en lekker warm. Complimenten Anu en Monika!

Riga is easily to reach for the Estonian knitters, so they were well represented. Anu Randmaa knitted even during the conference and in the bus to the Open Air Museum diligently on her beautiful Rositud stockings. Seldom have I seen more beautiful knitwear than these wool whtite stockings with deep red motifs. Now they are lucky stockings, because Anu allowed me to knit eight (my lucky number) stitches on the stocking that she we knitting.

Monika Plaser, my dear Estonian friend who to my great pleasure also had come to Riga, worked on mittens which were a heritage from her own family. They are so tightly knit that they can stand upright. Thus, they are durable and warm. Compliments Anu and Monika!

Rundale, klein Versailles in Letland, is een prachtig paleis met een flink aantal zalen en stijlkamers om te bekijken. De formele tuinen, waaronder een rozentuin met meer soorten rozen dan ik dacht dat er bestonden, is mooi aangelegd en heerlijk om met het lekkere weer door te wandelen. In het chique restaurant in de oude keukens van het paleis lieten we ons door de chef kok verwennen met een heerlijke salade en het mooiste en smakelijkste toetje ooit. Het kost je de kop niet, want de prijzen in Letland zijn voor ons heel laag, inclusief drankjes maar pakweg 15 euro pp. In veel van de decoraties van plafonds en muren zijn vogeltjes verwerkt. Lieve poedeltjes mogen op de arm van het baasje mee het paleis in. Zodra je het paleisterrein verlaat, ben je terug in Letland als je op de bobbelige weg een koe aan de ketting ziet die de berm netjes houdt. Even verderop leek het gesneeuwd te hebben, maar dat zijn slechts de pluisjes van de bomen.

Het paleis heeft een paar ruimtes gereserveerd voor textiel. Het hoogtepuntje voor ons als fanatieke breiers waren de gebreide zijden kousen uit het eerste deel van de 18de eeuw.

Rundale, small Versailles in Latvia, is a magnificent palace with a large number of halls and period rooms to view. The formal gardens, including a rose garden with more varieties of roses than I thought existed, is beautifully landscaped and lovely to walk through when it is  such nice weather. In the elegant restaurant in the old kitchens of the palace we let the chef cook spoil us with a delicious salad and the most beautiful and tastful dessert ever. It will cost you a lot, because the prices in Latvia are very low compared to the prices in the Netherlands, so including drinks is was just about 15 euros per person. In the decorations of ceilings and walls little birds are integrated. Sweet poodles are allowed in the palace on the arm of the owner. As soon as we left the palace grounds, we were back in Latvia when on the bumpy sides of the road we saw a cow on a chain that keeps the verge tidy. Just down the road it seemed to have snowed, but that was just the fluff of the trees.

The palace has a few spaces reserved for textiles. The highlight for us as avid knitters were the knitted silk stockings made in the first part of the 18th century.

Riga, een combinatie van een beeldschone oude stad met veel Art Nouveau, doorspekt met de echte Baltische sfeer en een moderne stad met chique hotels en een betere infrastructuur dan menig ander Europees land. En met veel verscheidenheid in de breimode, zie hier een voorbeeld met hoog schattigheidsgehalte. Moeder en kind dragen allebei een handgebreid vestje.

Ik heb nog  zoveel te vertellen over onze ongelooflijk bijzondere reis, maar dat komt later in diverse blogs…

Riga, a combination of a beautiful old town with lots of Art Nouveau and real the Baltic atmosphere and a modern city with fancy hotels and a better infrastructure than most other European countries. And with a lot of variety in the knitting fashion, see here a very cute example. Mother and daughter both wear a hand knitted cardigan.
