Life 'n Knitting

Het koffertje staat weer gepakt. De wekker is gezet. En ik heb er zin in! Een hele week met breivriendinnen Corry, Titia en Elsbeth naar Riga, Letland, voor de wantenconferentie. Menigeen die ik vertelde over de driedaagse wantenconferentie trok z’n wenkbrauwen op, maar de bezoekers van Life ‘n Knitting snappen het wel, denk ik zo…

Maar daar blijft het niet bij. Met een huurauto gaan we de dagen voor de start van de conferentie het land in voor allerlei breigerelateerde activiteiten en kennismakingen met veel Letse breiers. We hebben een prachtig programma, waar veel Letten aan hebben bijgedragen. Wat ‘n aardige mensen, die Letten, ik vind ze nu al leuk! Helemaal blij ben ik met de komst voor de conferentie van Monika  en een aantal andere breiers die ik in de loop der tijd met name in Estland heb leren kennen. Tot over een dikke week, houd Life ‘n Knitting dan goed in de gaten, want natuurlijk mogen jullie meegenieten van mijn ervaringen en foto’s.

My suitcase is packed again. The alarm clock is on. And I’m so excited! A whole week with knitting friends Corry, Titia and Elsbeth to Riga, Latvia, with as the main reason the mitten conference. Many people that I talked about the three-day mitten conference thought it was crazy to spend three days on this subject, but the visitors of Life ‘n Knitting understand that it just wonderful, I guess …

But that’s not all. With a rental car, we go the days before the start of the conference into the country for all kinds of knitting related activities and meeting Latvian knitters. We have a wonderful program, to which many Latvian knitters contributed. It seems that they are very nice people, the Lets, I think they so already! I’m totally happy with the arrival for the conference of Monika and some other knitters who I got to know over time, particularly in Estonia. Parijs is een wereldstad. Ik kwam er Peruaanse en Boliviaans breiwerk tegen. En het werk van de Zweedse Carl Larsson, waarvan ik nog niet zo lang geleden het woonhuis en atelier heb gezien in Zweden. De met zorg samengestelde tentoonstelling in het Petit Palais gaf een goed beeld van zijn talent, leven, liefde voor zijn vrouw en kinderen en het prachtige landelijke huis. In de huiselijke tafereeltjes zie je hoe ze leefden, werkten en… breiden. In de catalogus die ik kocht staan maar liefst twee breiende figuurtjes.

Paris is a metropolis. I found Peruvian and Bolivian knitting there. And the work of the Swedish Carl Larsson. Not so long ago I visited his house and studio in Sweden. The exhibition in het Petit Palais, that was so well put together, showed 0f his talent, life, love for his wife and children and the beautiful rural house. In the domestic scenes you can see how they lived, worked and … knitted. In the catalog that I bought are two paintings of knitters.

Verleden week was ik met Titia en Anke bij een lezing van Hanneke van Zuthem in Arnhem. Terwijl wij lekker zaten te breien, vertelde Hanneke over de Nederlandse breigeschiedenis. Heel interessant, ze had nog úren door mogen gaan. Hoewel meestal geldt dat hoe kouder (lees noordelijker) het land is, hoe interessanter de breisels, heeft Nederland toch ook wel wat te bieden op dit gebied. Staphorster vestjes, Bunschoter mouwtjes, floddermutsen en grolse wanten vormen ons brei-erfgoed. En in Marken had je Itse mutsen, waarvan de motieven en kleuren door vissers werden overgebracht van hun tochten naar onder meer Shetland. Leuk voor Titia, Anke en mij om te zien, want wij en nog een paar van onze breivrienden zijn daar in oktober voor de jaarlijkse Wool Week.

Gelderse mutsen, als je daar meer over wilt weten, dan moet je bij Anke Grevers en familie zijn…, ook voor prachtig kralenwerk!

Last week I was with Titia and Anke in Arnhm to attend a  lecture by Hanneke van Zuthem. While we knitting, Hanneke told us about the Dutch history of knitting. Very interesting, I wouldn’t have minded if she had gone on for hours. Although usually it is, the colder (ie more to the north) the country, the more interesting the kniting, the Netherlands still also have something to offer in this area. Cardigans from Staphorst, knitted sleeves from Bunschoten, floddermutsen (cotton baggy hats) and Grolse wanten (Groenlo mittens) are our knitting heritage. And in Marken you find Itse hats, whose motives and colors were taken by fishermen from their tours to Shetland. Nice for Titia, Anke and me to see, because we and a few of our knitting friends are there in October for the annual Wool Week.

Een week of wat terug had ik een van de bijzonderste ervaringen van de laatste tijd. Ik was uitgenodigd om bij het Magic Circus om naar een voorstelling te komen kijken en mee te denken met de circus directeur over de koppeling van het thema circus met het thema breien. Ik weet inmiddels wel dat je als breier soms op de gekste plaatsen komt, maar dit was wel een van de vreemdste ervaringen ooit. En ook de ontroerendste tot nog toe…. want dit kleinschalige circus, dat ondanks alles het hoofd boven water houdt en menig volwassene en kind de ervaring van z’n leven bezorgt, heeft mijn nuchtere hart gestolen. Het thema voor de volgende serie voorstellingen is KNITS, dus vandaar. Kijk maar op de Facebook-pagina voor meer informatie hierover.

Pakweg veertien medewerkers, waaronder artiesten, technische mensen, helpers, de directeur en Gera de persmanager, zetten zich volledig in voor het circus. Gera, die mij op het internet op het spoor was gekomen vanwege al mijn brei-activiteiten, heeft een warm hart voor het circusje. Ze zette me op een mooi plekje vlakbij de piste, waar ik al breiend, de voorstelling heb gezien. Het was super, wát een inzet, wát een liefde voor het vak! En ik, nou niet direct bekend als de grote kindervriend, genoot van het enthousiasme van een tent vol joelende kinderen die meeleefden met clown Joffrey die zijn Ikea-bordjes liet dansen en de zeer lenige acrobates.

A week or so ago I had one of the most extraordinary experiences of recent times. I was invited to the Magic Circus to see a show and to think along with the circus director about how to connect the circus with the theme knitting. I know by now that sometimes I come, as a knitter, in the strangest places, but this was one of the weird experiences ever. And the most touching so far …. because this small circus, that despite all keep survives and give many adults and children the experience of a lifetime, stole my heart. The theme for the next series of performances is KNITS , so that was the reason why they contacted me. Check out their Facebook page for more information. 

About fourteen employees, including artists, technical assistents, helpers, the director and Gera the press manager, go over their heads to do anything for this circus. Gera, who had found me on the internet where she found information on my knitting activities, has a warm heart for this small circus. She put me in a nice spot near the arena, where I knitting while I enjoyed seeing the show. It was super, the all have such commitment and love for the job! And I, not exactly known as a big friend of children, enjoyed the enthusiasm of a tent full of screaming children who loved seeing how clown Joffrey made his  plates dance and very agile acrobats.

De jaren rond 1900 moeten in Parijs een gewéldige tijd zijn geweest. Rond de eeuwwisseling was men optimistisch, levenslustig en genoot de gegoede klasse van welstand, kunst en vertier en alle moois dat het leven te bieden heeft. De tentoonstelling Paris 1900 over deze periode in Parijs geeft een vrolijk beeld van de tijd, de manier van leven en de kijk die men destijds had op de toekomst. Inclusief de ondeugende kantjes van het leven rond de eeuwwisseling.

De wereldtentoonstelling van 1900 moet heel wat geweest zijn in die tijd. Vernieuwende ontwikkelingen in kunst en wetenschap werden getoond aan de wereld. De organische belijningen van de ontluikende stroming Art Nouveau vond een plaatsje in het dagelijks leven, in kleding, metroingangen, posters en typografie. Ik zag er de posters die in mijn jeugd mijn kamer sierden. Toulouse Lautrec, Mucha, foto’s  van Nadar en een fantasievol filmpje van Mélies. Een paar dagen later vonden we zijn graf op Père Lachaise.

Er zijn prachtige japonnen en accessoires te bewonderen op de tentoonstelling. Naast de naaidoos was er een paartje gebreide katoenen mitaines met de verpakking waarin ze destijds zijn verkocht. Ze zien er vrijwel ongedragen uit. Het prijsje zit er nog aan. Helaas is het prachtige warenhuis Samaritaine enige jaren geleden gestopt.

De uitgebreide catalogus van een paar kilo ging mee, want het was één van de beste en leukste tentoonstellingen die ik ooit bezocht. Dat wil je vasthouden. En mocht je nog in Parijs zijn vóór 17 augustus 2014…

The years of about 1900 must have been a great time in Paris. Around the turn of the century the people were optimistic, full of life and those that were well off enjoyed the wealth, arts and entertainment, and all the beautiful things that life has to offer. The exhibition Paris 1900 about this period in Paris gives a cheerful picture of the time, the way of life and the the way they looked at the future. Including the naughty sides of life around the turn of the century .

The World Exposition of 1900 should have been a sensation then. Innovative developments in art and science were shown to the world. The organic lineation of the start of the Art Nouveau movement found its place in everyday life, clothing , subway entrances , posters and typography. I saw the posters in my youth decorated my room. Toulouse Lautrec , Mucha, photographs by Nadar and a film Mélies made with lots of creatitvity en fantasy.  A few days later we found his grave on Père Lachaise.

There are beautiful dresses and accessories to be admired at the exhibition. Besides the sewing box there was a pair of knitted cotton mittens with the packaging in which they were originally sold. They look like they ware not worn at all. The price tag is still attached. Unfortunately the beautiful warehouse Samaritaine stopped some years ago. 

We bought the extensive catalog (weight at least a few pounds!) because it was one of the best and nicest exhibitions I have ever visited. You want to hold to that. And if you happen to be in Paris before August 17, 2014 ….

Je gaat lekker een weekje naar Parijs en komt terug met twee oude mutsen uit Peru en Bolivia. Beide mutsen zijn gebreid met zo’n 50 à 60 steken op 10 cm, op heel dunne naalden dus. Aan de aangenaaide oorflappen zijn vrolijke kwastjes bevestigd. Het materiaal… Ik twijfel een beetje. Dunne wol? Katoen? Of toch iets synthetisch?

De muts uit Peru is gemaakt met de Fair Isle-techniek. Aan de achterkant zie je vrij lange lussen over het breiwerk lopen, maar doordat de muts zo fijn is gebreid, is dat geen probleem. Opvallend is de in verhouding tot  het fijne breiwerk, grove manier van de oorflappen aannaaien. Ook zie je dat de ‘naad’, de plaats waar de nieuwe toer start, duidelijk zichtbaar is. De kwastjes zijn bevestigd aan een wollen koordje.

De Boliviaanse must is het meest verschoten door het licht. Aan de binnenkant kan je zien dat de delen in de kleurbanen, die aan de buitenland heel lichtgroen zijn, ooit heldergroen waren. In deze muts zijn de lussen vastgelegd aan de binnenkant. In de witte strepen lijkt een speciale techniek te zijn gebruikt, die het effect van boordsteek geeft. Hierdoor zijn de minderingen duidelijker te zien. De kwastjes zijn aan een geweven bandje genaaid.

En Parijs? Nou, het was weer heerlijk! Later meer…

You are going to a good week to Paris and come back with two old hats from Peru and Bolivia. Both hats are knitted with circa 50 to 60 stitches on 10 cm, obviously on very thin needles. At the sewn earflaps are happy tassels attached. The material… I’m in doubt. Thin wool? Cotton? Or maybe a blend with synthetic content?

The hat from Peru was created with the Fair Isle technique. At the back you can see quite long strands, but because the hat is knitted so fine, that’s no problem. The way the earflaps are sewn onto the hat is not very neat in relation to the fine knitwear. Also you can see the “seam”, the place where the new tour starts, as it has a clearly visible jog. The tassels are attached to a woollen cord.

The Bolivian must is the most faded by light. On the inside you can see that the parts in the bands of colour, which are on the outside is very light, were once bright green. In this cap the strands are attached on the inside. In the white stripes a special technique seems to be used, which gives the effect of ribbing. As a result, the decreases are clearly visible. The tassels are sewn onto a woven strap.

Tegen een door de lokale breiclub gebreide achtergrond is er een voorstelling waarin de tijd centraal staat. Ik verwacht niet dat ze het vervelend vinden als je tijdens de voorstelling breit.

In a knitted entourage (knited by the members of the local knitting club, there is a performance in which time is the main theme. I do not expect that they find it annoying when you’re knitting during the show.
