KIP on Kihnu

kihnukrant2

This year KIP day I almost forgot it was there. I had just returned from Sweden/Denmark and lots to do, well, I just didn’t find time to organise anything or join others. There wasn’t organised as much as others years anyway. But I did think about it. What is your best memory of KIP day? Mine was the KIP day I spend on the Estonian island Kihnu in 2011. When I was in Estonia last month, Monika gave me a paper of that year about Kihnu culture. To my surprise I saw an article on the event, with photo, and I even found my self (brown shirt, black skirt, behind tree) on that photo, nicely KIP-ping with the women of Kihnu.

Anu Raud is one of the most important textile artists in Estonia. Last year we visited her in her workshop in her home. Afterwards she took us to the Heimtali Muuseum, only five minutes walk of her home. I was very impressed by the  lively, friendly lady that still designs beautiful tapestries  and supports the Heimtali Muuseum. I admire her textile arts, her efforts for the museum, the educational work she does there and her love for the textiles and the traditions of her land. For Handwerken zonder Grenzen 177 – June/July 2013 I wrote an article about Anu Raud and the Heimtali Muuseum. In the book Anu Raud, Eesti TEkstiilikunstnik / Estonian Textile Artist (yes, fortunately in English!) you can read even more about her and see more  photos of her work.

Off-topic…

Gefeliciteerd lieverd!

Yesterday night Jan, yes, my husband Jan, the award Telecom Manager of the Year. A huge achievement for which he worked hard for years. Congratulations darling!

Years ago, even before Beatrix became queen, she sat in the lounge of the SS Rotterdam, drinking something, smoking a sigaret and knitting. The place where Jan got his award yesterday. So, this makes this off-topic blog a bit knitting related…

The Swedish island Öland is wonderful, of that fact I was convinced last month when I was also there. But it is nothing compared to how the island looks now in spring green with the colours of so many flowers on the alvarets (stone steps) and everywhere you look. The delay of the start of spring gives an explosion of growth. Orchids everywhere, flowers along the roads, lily of the valley and mainly a lot of purple and white lilac. The whole island smelled heavenly like the linnen closet of my grandmother, where she kept her flower scented bars of soap. Ann’s new chicken I saw still in the egg last month, but were now walking in the gardens of Ann’s lovely hoouse. A lot of Viking culture, the big Borgholm castle and Solliden (the summer palace of the royals) with sunny stylish gardens. To stay in Ann’s cosy summerhome with strawberry curtain in the kitchen was so nice. Everywhere you can eat good food; cakes, bread with cumminseed and delicious fish. Thàt, combined with a visit to Ullcentrum and the many Hemslöjden and other nice shops where you can buy great things, make the island to a summer paradise.

Hardly returned from a fantastic knitting trip to Estonia, and off I go again. This time with Jan to Zweden. We went to Lund to visit our dear friends who live there and then to Öland as I think that is such a beautiful island and I loved showing it to Jan. On the way back we travelled through Denmark, where we spent the night in the beautiful old town Ribe. The stay in the nice little appartment was booking on the internet. To my surprise I soon got an email with instructions for the big freezer in the appartment. And where to put our fishing rods… It appeared to be a real wooden fishing appartment, but fortunately we that bothered us not much and we were happy with the huge freezer that cooled our white wine in no time. 😉

Lund is a nice university town with a beautiful cathedrale and a well assorted yarn shop. In Malmö, where recently the Songfestival was organized, our friends showed us a new neighbourhood with modern architecture and well situated along the water. We were lucky, was the big flowershow was held during our stay there. There was a competition garden design. Of course I wanted the knitting garden to win… Unfortunately we didn’t meet Lena’s mother, but we did saw her photo in the magazine that was just published, knitting… just like Lena’s and Emil’s stylish house and beautiful garden in a magazine about interieurs of houses.

Denemarken was onverwacht leuk.

Denamerk was unexpectedly nice. Before I thought only of Lego when Denmark was mentioned, but the country has a lot more to offer. In Tønder we coïncedently walked into the lace museum and in Ribe we found a big yarn shop and a small and very cute shop of the Danish designer Marianne Østergaard. Her style of work resemble the work of Christel Seyfarth, Kaffe Fassett and Hanne Falkenberg. Flowers à la Marimekko and stripes in well choosen colour combinations lift your spirit immidiately. Feeling better from knitting and seeing ready made knitwear, isn’t that we want from our hobby…

Nederland, vertelt Mai Meriste.

Orange, yellow, pink and a small amount of dark red, some white and a tiny bit of green. You think Oilily, I say Muhu!

The region with the most colourful knitwear of all Estonia of course has a local history museum, where you can see all this beautiful stuff yourself. This interest in crafts from Muhu has increased significantly lately, especially in Japan and… The Netherlands, Mai Meriste tells us. She is one of the authors of the book Designs and Patterns from Muhu Island, a great bulky book published by  Saara Publishing House. She is also the one who was prepared to give us a guided tour through the farms of Koguva, where writer Juhan Smuul once wrote his books and where the beds are all made with colourful bedspreads. But Mai saved the best for last for us, the handicrafts and knitting. Two rooms filled with pink, orange and yellow pieces of clothing and bedspreads, the island’s costumes, skirts, mittens, gloves, socks and stockings that we were allowed to touch as long as we were wearing white cotton gloves. Making photographs was permitted as long as it was without flash, because the result of flashing a lot can been seen on the first photo.

Our daily bread…

Supermarkets on Muhu are quite nice for they have an edge with a knitting pattern on their outside walls and some loafs of bread have a wrapping with a knitting pattern. The bread from the pink package with the sweet cats on it, tasted very well. Can you imagine it, the bread from our local supermarket with a wrapping with the Groenloo mittens pattern?
