The islands Saaremaa and Muhu are sparsely populated. During the rides on long forest roads and dust roads that make the car paint sputter off your car and produce thick clouds of dust, you hardly see any people. In Kuressaare Janne took us to Know Sheep, a studio-like shop where you can buy the most beautiful things. All made from and with wool of course. One of us chose a round felted piece of Wensleydale of which she is going to make a trendy bag and someone else fell for the same kind of curls but in the shape off a pair of felted slippers. And I found, besides Sörve Villaveski’s lovely, fair trade yarn (see my previous blog about this fabulous yarn factory), two pairs of wrist warmers of yarn with dog hair. Beautifully made and in a nice colour choice.  By the way, I didn’t buy the felted pointed hat.

Know Sheep is an international project to improve the sheep farms of the Baltic island sheep in the Baltic States and Finland, to promote animal welfare and increase small-scale productivity. The posters with the beautiful naked girls amongst the sheep attract tourist attention. Sex sells, as wool does. Once you’re inside, you probably won’t leave without something nice and woolly in your bag.

Monika was too busy with the conference to join us on our trip to Saarema and Muhu, but she made sure there was a ‘replacement’ in the form of her Saarema cousin. Janne was the surprise of the day, such a sweet girl. She was right on time at the meeting place, a crossroads on Saarema and asked: “Are you those ladies?”. “Yes, we are!”, I answered and that’s how our day with Janne on Saarema started. Monika was right, without Janne we would never have found the Sörve Villaveski wool mill. She also translated everything in English for us, so that we got a good picture of the workings of this little factory. At the end of the day, after she had taken us to the southernmost point of the island (we saw an adder when we were searching for stones with holes in them) and a very nice diner in an Estonian mill, we said goodbye at a parking place in Kuressaare, where she let us listen to a farewell song, Rigolau from the car speakers. And asked us to sing along… the things we experience in Estonia.

We were the first guests in Egon and Merike’s wool mill. This couple built up this factory from nothing on Egon’s grandfather’s land. Even almost all furniture was made by Egon himself. Proudly they showed us the rooms and machines of the factory and they demonstrated the process from fibre to pre-yarn. Perfectly maintained machines, love for their profession and local raw materials guarantee top quality yarns. They also process dog hair in their yarns, making them extra soft and warm. And no, you smell nothing of it anymore. Fortunately they had a small stock, so we could buy some yarn for ourselves and for Monika.

The eggs of the chickens that were pottering around the house are swapped with dog hair from their neighbour´s dogs. We were also allowed to buy 20 eggs. Merike chose the best ones and dusted them clean before they went into the box. At night Elsbeth baked us delicious omelettes. The ten eggs that were left over, were taken to Viljandi in the hope that we would be allowed to bake them in the hotel kitchen there, like was done with the chantarelles we picked ourselves the year before. But Corry picked up the bag in which we had put the eggs on top and yes, there they went, right in the middle of Tallinn where we would be picked up by buses to go to the conference. Fortunately the damage was limited to two broken eggs that we left in the bushes for the birds.

One of the dried fish we were offered was tasted on the spot by all of us in the context of `try everything and hold fast to what is good´. Someone even ate the small swimming bladder, which she could enjoy for a long time. Fish chewing gum. The remainder of the fish went with us through Estonia and surfaced again at several locations. I guess we are more of a raw herring eating people.

Incidentally, we almost gained a red male cat, for it entered one of our rental cars and decided to join us on our trip through Estonia. We drove off, being waved goodbye by Egon and Merike, while the chickens were pottering, the cats were finding a sunny spot to take an afternoon nap and the sheep dog was chasing the cock for lack of sheep. An educational experience in a very idyllic spot!

Estonia, such a wonderful country! Nine days of enjoying the hospitality, the nice food, the culture and the beautiful knitwear of this friendly country. This time the highlights were a visit to the islands Saaremaa and Muhu, Haapsalu, the Sweater Conference in Viljandi, a visit at publishing house Saara in Turi and of course Tallinn.

On Monday 13 May we arrived at the airport of Tallinn, where we stepped in our rental cars and drove to Saarema. There we had rented two wooden Estonian cottages where Elsbeht baked us delicious omelets. On Tuesday night of course we watched together the Songfestival as that is the tradition. While chatting with Jan and Monika…

Blogging about a knitting journey and not mentioning knitting which you all look forward too… be patient please, we have seen the most amazing things. And yes, I also brought a suitcase stuffed with knitting related items back home. I will tell you all about it the coming weeks.

Estonia 2013

muhu1

Three years ago I hardly knew where it was. Now I’m going there for the sixth time. It is so much fun! Estonia… Colourful, stuffed with tradition and a great place to be.

So we organised aother trip this summer. Monday I leave with my knitting friends for nine days of knitting journey. First we  go the the islands Saaremaa and Muhu with rental cars (Mai Meriste will show us the Muhu Muuseum), then we go to Haapsalu (where the Haapsalu Shawl Museum will be opened exclusively for us!) and then to the Sweater Conference in Viljandi. We will finish our trip with a few days in our beloved Tallinn en een dagje Turi, where we will visit the depot of the Open Air Museum to see all the knitwear and a day to Turi to visit our friends at publishing house Saara. Thanks to our dear Estonian friend Monika, who organised the knitting related items for us. Without her help it would only be half the fun!

We have a new king in the Netherlands. Willem-Alexander took over from his mother Beatrix on 30 April 2013. During the inauguration his wife Máxima wore a deep blue dress and cape with cristals. Such a wonderful colour! Is was in love with it and drowned in all the bright blue.

It is difficult to find yarn that blue. And then you also have to be so lucky that you want to knit with it. I had such luck, as two weeks ago we received an order at the Afstap in Amsterdam of Cardiff cashmere of very high quality. Also this awesome colour blue!  So I took a box and now I’m knitting a warm Orenburg shawl. I love to knit with it…
