Bea gaat breien en beppen…

April 29th, 2013

Dutch Queen Beatrix, who turns 75 on Thursday, announces her abdication in favour of her son, Prince Willem-Alexander, in a hastily announced broadcast on Dutch National Television to the nation at her home palace in The Hague

Eindelijk tijd om te breien!

Finally, time to knit!

When you knit, you get to see places! I have been saying this for many years now, because when I started Stitching ‘n Bitching I introduced the term ‘knitting trip’ and suited the action to the word with some cautious trips to Paris and London. The attention soon shifted to the northern countries, such as Norway, Sweden and the Baltic States, among which Estonia, for in the colder regions more people are knitting and therefor these regions are more interesting for knitters.

Last year we went to the Dalarnas region in Sweden and now it was Öland‘s turn. Öland is a beautiful island in the south-east of Sweden. It is big enough to offer variety and small enough to get the genuine feeling of being on an island. The flight to Copenhagen shortened the trip considerably. From there we continued by rental car, crossing the enormous bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden and cutting straight through the south of Sweden to Öland.

Hartverwarmend!

The reason for our trip was a visit to the Ullcentrum together with where the Ullcentrum (blog) yarn can be bought. Ullcentrum is also the supplier of the yarns I am knitting with like crazy at the moment for my new book about the traditional Swedish knitting technique twined knitting. For this technique special yarn is required and Ullcentrum offers it. There is a Butik, a well-assorted shop, they offer knitted garments, craft books, very nice felted home accessories, sheep skins, sheep wool and yarns as well as the Z-plied yarns we use. And they are só kind! Owner Ann, her daughter and the employees of the company welcomed us with open arms. We were invited to use the enormous summer house in Persnäs. The felted slippers were already there for us in the hall. In the kitchen we found a fridge full of delicious stuff. The last evening Ann brought us delicious salmon, potatoes and salad and cooked us a festive candlelit meal. We were made feel so very welcome and enormously spoiled. Heatwarming!

Thanks to our rental car we could see the entire island that is 140 kilometres long in the few days that we were there. We went from south to north, making lots of pictures along the way of the beautiful landscape and the typical Swedish elements of which a number will undoubtedly end up in our book. We saw gigantic hares, deer, birds, sheep with little lambs and even fallow deer on the Alvaret (typical Öland stone plains with swampy vegetation). Windmills, yellow and red wooden houses and entire carpets of little blue flowers make the landscape typically Swedish. All this surrounded by a blue-grey sky and beaches scattered with stones and boulders, overgrown with mosses that thrive in the clean air.

On our way back to Copenhagen we visited Martijn, a dear family friend, who spoiled us with coffee and raspberry chocolate. Fortunately he understood our knitters’ need to combine our flying visit with a visit to the local yarn shop and the book store in Lund. But anyone who has seen and bought so many yarns already is no longer very impressed by the ‘normal’ yarn shop, especially with the next knitting trip coming closer.

A Very Special Present

Nogmaals dank, lieve Truus!

Truus, my colleague at de Afstap in Amsterdam, was one of our students at Het Betere Breiwerk (Advanced Knitting) this spring. She worked hard, made homework, practised a lot and even helped doing dishes so we could catch our trains on time. The ideal student… and gave us a beautiful present during the last lesson. A baby booty that was knitted by her grandmother Aaltje Jaspers in 1891 during her education at the Industry school for girls in Alkmaar. Beautifully made, with little buttonholes for buttons and made of strong unbleached cotton. Advanced knitting, more as a century old, and it ended up in my hand. Such a personal gift, given with such good intentions, will be treasured forever. Again, thank you dear Truus!

Kouwe handen – cold hands

Iets geliefds verliezen is nooit leuk.

Losing stuff you love is awful. But shit happens. For example when you are in the bus or train, cosy and warm. When you get out, you drop a mitten or glove. Once you are in the cold outside you realise that you have to go home with one or two cold hands. An terrible thought for every knitter. Mitaines are less likely to get lost. You keep them on your hands, even when you have to use your fingers to do something, so the risc they get lost is smaller.

After a few days of looking out what’s is to be found on the streets, I collected some photos of pityfull lost knitwear. Especially the hand knitted items are pathetic. Mittens, a scarf and even a sock. Some day they were knitted with love and care, worn with pleasure and now abandoned and alone on the street…

Btw, the orange hat was not really lost, but just place on the chest for coins in a church in Trier, Germany. The little boy that spotted his hat and the woman taking photos of it was very confused. Why all this attention for his hat? So he run for it, grabbed his hat and disappeared into the church.

We have just returned from a trip to the small country Luxembourg. Squeezed in between France/Belgium and Germany it forms a funny combination of the characteristics of both countries. The best of both worlds. The savoir vivre of the French neighboor, the solidity and tidyness of the German neighboor and also something typical Luxembourg. During your stay there we spook French, German, Dutch and English.

The houses the paint in bright colours, especially in the vicinity of Luxembourg city. In the sunlight they combine nicely with the newest fashion trends. The Dutch villages and cities look rather dull and colourless compared to the colourfull Luxembourg. But obviously we want to express ourselves with colour too. Look at the beautiful images of the demolition of an apartment building in Utrecht Overvecht. I made the photos a few years ago as I impressed by the way it visualized how people colour the spaces they live in. Now the images show us how we use colour. The inhabitants of Luxembourg use colour at the outside of the houses, we use in in our interieurs.

And for the knitting? Hmm, I didn’t see much that excited me. Here and there a yarn shop with some regular yarns. Untill I walked through the Basilica, the throning hall of empirer Konstantijn, build in 31o, and discovered a table at the exit, with knitted socks and baby stuff. It was knitted by the wife of the director. The profits go to charity. Of course I bought a pair of socks.

It was great! For two days there was a hall loaded with stands piled up with yarn, tools and books. Classrooms were filled with eager to learn knitters. The Dutch Knitters gave two introduction workshops twined knitting. The only knitting technique that requires some gymnastics. We love to share our enthousiasm for this old Swedish knitting technique with interested knitters.

Thanks to all that coöperated to make the Brei- en Haakdagen this big success. See you in October in Groningen!
