Life 'n Knitting

Het was weer een gezellige handwerkbeurs. Maar na drie drukke dagen twijnend breien demonstreren, is het goed uitrusten op zondag. Dit keer  geen Dutch Knitting Café meer, maar werd The Dutch Knitters uitgenodigd de Zweedse techniek twijnend breien te demonstreren.

It was a very nice craft fair again. But after three busy days demonstrating twined knitting, it is very good to relax a little this Sunday. Again no Dutch Knitting Café this time, but we, The Dutch Knitters, were invited to demonstrate twined knitting. 

We zagen er schattig uit in onze schortjes van het diner in Tartu in september. Veel complimentjes! Complimenten ook voor de familie Grevers, want die hebben er alwéér een boek uitgepoept, het derde alweer. Ik kreeg er ook eentje, ook al ben ik niet zo van van het poppensokken breien. Die werden gesigneerd met een zeer Christelijke pen, maar ik denk dat het diepe geloof bij mevrouw Grevers toch niet zo diep zit, want ze prees meer de pennen die ze op de Christelijke beurs waar ze stond met haar kraampje ‘per ongeljik’ meenam  dan de Heer.

We did look really cute in the aprons we made for the diner in Tartu last September. We received many compliments! Compliments for the family Grevers as well, because they produced another book, their third already. I received a copy too, even though I am not really into doll’s sock knitting. The books were signed with a very Christian pen, but I think that Mrs Grevers isn’t that religious, because she praised the pens she took “by accident” on the Christian fair where she was one of the exhibitors, more than the Lord.

Ondertussen kreeg ik nog een spoedklusje voor een patroon waar ik met hart en ziel aan werkte, want volgende week moet het al af zijn. Later zal ik jullie vertellen waar het is is. Geen vervelende klus trouwens, want ik voer het project uit in het garen waar ik, sinds ik het in de Hifa-fabriek zag liggen toen ik daar in september was, verliefd op ben. Deze Norsk Pelsull is gemaakt voor echte Noorse wol van inheemse schapen en dat voel je. Het is garen naar mijn hart, lekker ruig en toch zacht genoeg voor een makkelijk draagbare warme shawl, tikje harig en dankzij het feit dat er grijze wol is toegevoegd, prachtig levendig geverfd. De knitty-gritty… 260 meter op 100 gram, naalden 3,5 – 4 mm met 22 steken op 10 cm. Ik koos bloedrood garen want een hartenshawl moet natuurlijk rood zijn. Dat kan niet anders.

In the meantime I received a rush job for a pattern that I worked on with heart and soul, because it has to finished next week already. I will tell you about this later on. Not a tedious job by the way, for I am making the project in the yarn that I fell in love with from the moment I saw it displayed in the Hifa factory when I was there in September. This Norsk Pelsull is made of real Norwegian wool of home-bred sheep and that you can feel. It is a yarn after my heart, nice and rugged yet soft enough for a comfortable and wearable shawl, slightly hairy and thanks to the fact that grey wool was added, it is dyed beautifully vivid. The knitty-gritty…260 meter to 100 grammes, needle size 3.5 – 4mm with a gauge of 22 stitches to 10 cm. I chose blood red yarn because a heart shawl should of course be red. I cannot be any other colour.

We vertelden alle belangstellenden over onze actie om de reprint van  Tvåändstickat van Dandanell en Danielsson niet alleen in het Zweeds maar ook in het Engels uit te laten geven. Dit prachtige boek, met zoveel informatie over de historie van twijnend breien en veel patronen, móet beschikbaar komen voor alle breiers, dus wie de petitie nog niet getekend heeft, doe dat alsjeblieft snel op de site van The Dutch Knitters! We gaan al richting de 400, maar het moeten er nog veel meer worden, dus zegt het voort.

We told all that were interested about our campaign to get the reprint of Tvåändstickat by Dandanell and Danielsson published not only in Swedish but also in English. This fantastic book, filled to the brim with information about the history of twined knitting and many patterns, has to become available for all knitters, so if you did not yet sign the petition, please do so quickly on The Dutch Knitters’ website! We are heading towards 400, but we need many more, so spread the word.

Wat hebben we het druk gehad, maar dankzij de kersenbonbonnetjes van die lieve Karin en een blik Quality Street kwamen we er goed doorheen en zijn we nu moe maar tevreden en voldaan weer thuis.

We have been very busy, but thanks to dear Karin’s cherry liqueur chocolates and a tin of Quality Streets we managed and now we are back home, tired but happy and satisfied.

Meestal vind ik gordijnen maar stoffige dingen, maar deze zijn anders. Ieder deel heeft ingeweven geometrische figuren, maar dichtgeschoven vormen ze samen een Estlands breimotief. Hoe verzìn je het hè. Ze zijn te bewonderen in het restaurant in Viljandi, waar we met uitzicht over de vallei heerlijk gegeten hebben.

I think most curtains are dusty collectors, but these are different. Every part has its own woven in geometrical figures, but put them together and you see an Estonian knitting motif. Its pure genius! You can find them in the restaurant in Viljandie, where we had a lovely dinner with a view on the valley. 

Ik kocht er bij de receptie superdicht gebreide wanten, gemaakt door een student van de handwerkopleiding in Viljandi. De receptioniste legde even haar eigen breiwerk neer om ze af te rekenen. ‘s Avonds troffen we haar weer in haar kantoortje met de prachtige gordijnen, weer druk met haar breiwerk. Zou haar baas aan haar hebben gevraagd wat voor gordijnen ze daar wilde en zei ze toch: “Ach, doe maar breigordijnen…”.

I bought very tightly knitted mittens at the reception desk. They were made by a student of the crafts educational center in Viljandi. The woman at the reception just put the knitting that she was working on the desk while she sold them to me. Lateron that evening we saw her knitting in her office room with the beautiful curtains. I wondered, her boss might have asked her what kind of curtains she liked before ordering them. Maybe she just said: “Well, knitting curtains would be lovely…”.

Je loopt nietsvermoedend de Estonian Handicraft House met kelderwinkel van Riini Tomberg in Pikk-straat in Tallinn in en wat zie je daar in de boekenkast? Warme Handen! Wat is het ongeloof lijk leuk om ons eigen boek tegen te komen in het buitenland. De verkoopster keek eens Daphne, naar ons boek en toen naar Daphne en had al snel door dat niet alleen de auteurs maar ook het covermodel zich in haar winkel bevond. Giebelend breide ze toen maar door aan haar sok. Niet alleen daar vonden we ons boek, maar ook toen we nog een andere Eesti Kasitöö (winkel met handwerk en handwerkartikelen)  inliepen. Daar lag het bij de spulletjes van Monika, haar mooie garens en de Haapsula shawl, zo genoemd omdat ik Haapsalu altijd Haapsula noem. Dat krijg ik er nu helemaal nooit meer uit.

Unsuspectingly you walk into the Estonian Handicraft House  with  Riini Tomberg’s shop in the cellar in Pikk Street in Tallinn and what do you see in the bookcase? Warm Hands! What fun it is to come across our own book abroad. The sales lady looked at Daphne, our book and then again at Daphne and she soon realised that not only the authors of the book but also the cover model was in her shop. While giggling she continued knitting her sock. Not only in that shop we came across our book but also in another Eesti Käsitöö (a shop with crafts and crafts materials). There it was lying with Monika´s stuff, her beautiful yarns and the Haapsula shawl, which is has that name because I always say Haapsula instead of Haapsalu. I won’t ever get rid of it now.

Bij Emma Leppermann in Masters Courtyard, die een prachtige gebreide fiets voor de deur heeft staan, vonden Monika’s zelfgesponnen armbandjes. Ze hebben daar prachtig stijlvol design, maar ik wilde de fiets en die paste helaas niet in de koffer. Een andere breifiets vond ik in een winkeltje in Pikk-straat. Ook daar design met de typisch nieuwe Estlandse slag, moderne vormen, praktische voorwerpen maar met respect voor de folklore en handwerktradities van het land.

Tijdens de conferentie in Tartu verkocht Monika Warme Handen en zette ze bij haar foto ook haar handtekening om de koper te verrassen met een uniek exemplaar van ons boek. Ook in de bibliotheek van het Heimtali museum lag een exemplaar van Warme Handen tussen de prachtige oude Estlandse breiboeken. Wie had dat kunnen denken…

At Emma Leppermann´s in Masters Courtyard, where a beautifully knit bicycle adorns the entrance of the shop, we found Monika´s homespun bracelets. They have such stylish design over there, nevertheless I wanted the bike but unfortunately that did not fit into my suitcase. I found another knitted bycicle in a shop in Pikk Street. There they had design objects in the typically new Estonian style, modern shapes, practicle objects but with respect for the folkore and crafts traditions of this country.

During the conference in Tartu Monika sold Warm Hands and signed her photo in there to surprise the buyer with a unique copy of our book. The Heimtali Museum library also contained a copy of our book and it was placed between the beautiful old Estonian knitting books. Who would have thought that….

Dus… Warme Handen is te koop in diverse käsitöö’s , maar ook via de site van The Dutch Knitters en in veel wolwinkels.

So… Warm Hands is for sale in several käsitöös in Tallinn, but also through The Dutch Knitters´ website and in many yarn shops.

Ik heb al rond de 400 petities binnen, maar hopen op nog wat meer, teken de petitie voor uitgave van Tvåändsstickat in het Engels! En zegt het door…

In november maakten ik het diner mee in het Guild House of Blackheads in Tallinn na Mardilaat. Dat was een geweldige ervaring. Maar tijdens het diner in Tartu aan het eind van de eerste dag van de conferentie in Tartu waren nòg meer gasten in prachtige klederdrachten aanwezig uit Estland, IJsland, Letland, Noorwegen en Zweden. En onze eigen Anke, die de Gelderse werkdracht mee had genomen, inclusief haar klompjes en gebreid Gelders mutsje. Menigeen maakte veel foto’s, want zo’n gewèldige avond met zoveel moois, dat wil je vasthouden.

In November 2011 I attended diner after Mardilaat at the Guild House of Blackheads in Tallinn. This was a fantastic experience. But during the diner in Tartu at the end of the first day of the conference in Tartu even more guests were present in beautiful traditional costume from Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Norway and Sweden. And our own Anke, who brought the Gelders work costume, including her wooden shoes and knitted Gelders cap. Many people made photos, for such a marvellous night with so many beautiful things that’s something you want to capture.

Door twee dames in Estlandse dracht werden de dames in klederdracht naar voren geroepen, waarna zij vertelden en vragen beantwoordden over de specifieke elementen van de kleding. Anke demonstreerde heel elegant het nut van de lintjes aan het schort, waarmee het schort op z’n plek wordt gehouden als de draagster bukt.

The ladies in costume were introduced by two ladies in Estonian costume after which they explained their costume to the public and answered questions about the specific characteristics of their costume. Anke, very elegantly, demonstrated the use of the ribbons attached to the apron that keep the apron in its place when the user bends forward.

De rest van ons droeg het speciaal voor de gelegenheid gemaakte Hollands schort. Het leuke was dat iedereen zelf had bedacht hoe het schort eruit moest zien. In ieder schort zag je het karakter van de drager terug. Ik had witte schorten laten bedrukken met het Dutch Knitter’s logo Antje en theedoeken van de Douwe Egberts verknipt voor het verfraaien van de onderrand en zak. Mijn schortje zal je terug zien op de Handwerkbeurs 25 tm  27 oktober in Ahoy Rotterdam, waar ik demonstraties twijnend breien zal geven.

The rest of us wore Dutch aprons made especially for this occasion. It was very nice that every one of us had her own vision of what the apron should look like. In every apron the character of the wearer was reflected. I had white aprons printed with the Dutch Knitter’s logo Antje and cut up Douwe Egberts tea towels to decorate the lower edges and the pockets. You will be able to see my apron on the Handwerkbeurs in Ahoy Rotterdam, 25-27 October when I will give demonstrations on twined knitting.

De feestelijk versierde zaal met tafels overladen met voedsel deden denken aan de feestavondjes uit de jaren tachtig. De gasten vinden het heel normaal dat er tijdens het diner iemand opstaat om een drinkeliedje te zingen. De ‘lichte’ lunch die we ‘s middags kregen voorgeschoteld, was voor de meesten van ons een uitgebreide maaltijd met veel vleesgerechten. In de reisgids voor Estland staat op pagina 1 dat je als vegetariër maar beter niet naar Estland kan gaan. Onzin hoor, maar Hil, Tanja en ik knepen ‘m wel even toen we bij de start van het diner de grote schalen vlees zagen en schepten als (pesco)vegetariërs maar een aardappeltje op ons bord. Gelukkig werden die snel omgeruild voor een bordjes met een lekker zalmpje. Het dessert werd door mij opgediend, want ik had toch mijn schortje al om.

The festively decorated hall with tables laden with food reminded us of party nights in the eighties. The guests found it quite normal that someone got up during diner and started to sing a drinking song. The ‘light’ lunch we were served in the afternoon was a large meal for most of us, with lots of meat dishes. In the travel guide for Estonia it says on the first page that when you are a vegetarian you’d better avoid visiting Estonia. This is pure nonsense, but Hil, Tanja and I were a bit anxious when we saw the large plates with meat at the start of the lunch and being pesco-vegetarians we helped ourselves to some potatoes. Fortunately our plates with potatoes were soon exchanged for plates with delicious salmon. I served dessert as I was wearing my apron anyway.
